How appropriate. They fight like a cow.

It's funny.  The idea of maturity in diplomacy.  Assad tells the best jokes.

"I just flew in from Damascus, and boy are my armies tired.  And how about those gas prices, amiright?  That slowly suffocating lady in the front row knows what I'm talking about."

I'm usually in strong support for diplomacy. But this is pretty pointless. The rebels main point of contention is that Assad should leave... but the government representatives don't represent Syria, they represent Assad. So the main demand of the opposition will not be met. The only way that would happen would be for the rebels to win enough battles to make it worthwhile for a group of people inside the government to turn on Assad and offer that deal. At one point it seemed like that could happen but ever since the government regrouped and brought in Hezbollah, things just haven't looked good for the rebels.

There is not just one set of "rebels" and they fight each other as much as they fight Assad.

Yes. That is also a problem with these talks. But I think overall, all the other factions agreed (or at least agreed until recently) that any political future for Syria must start with Assad stepping down. And they aren't going to get that from a negotiation table under the current circumstances. The fact that they are fighting each other also  makes the possibility of winning more battles to pressure Assad more difficult, which makes it even less likely he'll be forced to step down.

We are magnets, they are steel.

/Let them all kill each other. It seems to be a human need in that part of the  world, to display how absurd their tribal superstitions are.
