Two things:
1) Headline got a snort of amusement from me.

2) People made WAY to big a deal about it, but that was no wardrobe 'malfunction'. Yes, it was right at the end of song, but the way Janet and Justin both stopped and kinda huddled made it obvious they were playing it up and subtlety drawing attention to it. With most stage/live performances like that the performers would try and keep going with the routine and not draw attention to the fact that something unusual just happened.

I think they knew what they are doing and played their roles nicely.

Yep. There are parents who bought their children Grand Theft Auto and got pissed when a badly-animated sex scene was snuck in. There are parents who take their kids to R rated movies then biatch at the theater if their little snowflake saw a bare ass.

American culture is *severely* farked up when it comes to nudity.

Look at the way that vinyl thing is constructed. Under her left breast, you see rivets holding that piece on every inch or so. Under the right one that "came off", you can clearly see there were no rivets holding it on, and snaps visible in two spots. That piece of her costume was designed to come off, and their behavior was very much part of the act.

More of a perspective on puberty. I'm sure between Looney Tunes, pro sports, and schoolyard fights, I saw all kinds of violence as a kid, but what I'll always remember is the first set of naked breasts I ever saw. For such a simple design, they certainly command people's attention.

Changed?

No it pretty much cemented the notion that a good half of this country is made up of conservative prudes who were worried kids might see it.

This incident proved to me that we are living in a conservative country. No matter who's President, no matter what progressive social programs are being bandied around in Congress.

This incident proved we're kind of farked as a country.

DNRTA - don't need to...

I remember it like this...  The FCC was finally actually starting to lighten up a little bit.  Some previously forbidden words were making their way into the mainstream.  They were finally loosening their grip on trying to censor every damn thing that was said.

Then these two pulled the "wardrobe malfunction" stunt.  The conservatives and the FCC went absolutely berzerk!!  It set everything back by years.  And it will likely never recover.

So, it's not just the internet that has changed.  Every form of media has suffered for it.

Nice job, guys.  You did us a really good service.

Apparently over half a million football fans have too much god dammed free time on their hands.

I don't care if it was planned or not, it lasted less than a second, and with that bizarre piercing thing on her nipple you could barely see anything. You know what else happened in February 2004? There's even a second curtain so men can undress in private (modesty curtain and shower curtain), then a hook on the wall of the shower specifically for underpants.

I still get mad when I think of that Super Bowl. My dad still can remember the exact cuss words he heard his 15 year old son yell when that kickoff went out of bounds. He was understanding. and maybe just a little bit proud...

the_end_is_rear: In December my wife and I were down in Playa Del Carmen. We go there a couple times a year.
It is very European and it is very common to see women on the beach minus bikini tops.
In other words.....beautiful

Well on this last trip we were at our usual beach club hangout when this women starts complaining to the staff there about several women who are topless.
She went on to say "I am an American Christian and I do not want my children exposed to this"
*facepalm*
The beach club manager polite told her that since these women are not running around shakin it, there is no issue.
The "American Christian" took her kids and left the beach club.

America, as a whole, is very repressed.
It is no surprise that we have so many sex crimes etc.

They are just breasts, big farking deal.

My wife and I went on our honeymoon a couple hours north on Isla Mujeres, and we met up with a couple friend of ours.

While most women who are topless are discreet, my wife and the other girl were openly playing with each others tits and doing "nip tickling"

I think that is what the woman expects the topless women to descend into.

The Liver: AteMyBrain: "No one remembers the second half of the Super Bowl."

...except the millions of viewers like myself, who were interested in the game, and didn't even bother to watch the halftime show. (And didn't care about the "fallout", and still don't, even to this day)

Sorry, Rolling Stone reporter. I know you thought that sounded really cool and added to the importance of the topic.

And yet, you've managed to one-up him in that department. Kudos.

Oh you!

Won't the other boys get jealous?

Fano: The real tragedy is that we were moving toward nudity on basic cable. Between the Stern show and Wild on, it would have been only a matter of time. Then bam, turd in the toilet punch bowl.

Exactly.  It was a Super Bowl that was won with 0:04 to go!  No one remembers that?

Yeah, there have been some crappy Super Bowls that I've turned off by the 3rd quarter, but no- not this one.

Thanks.

I was specifically referring to YouTube.  I was going to get more specific, but I couldn't think of a way that didn't detract from the joke...

I agree with your assertions about American repression, but I do NOT believe your anecdote one single bit. Extrapolating a known quantity (American repression) to an unfunny stereotype is common internet BS.  Rework your fiction and come back with a more believable story.

Slives: Two things:
1) Headline got a snort of amusement from me.

2) People made WAY to big a deal about it, but that was no wardrobe 'malfunction'. Yes, it was right at the end of song, but the way Janet and Justin both stopped and kinda huddled made it obvious they were playing it up and subtlety drawing attention to it. With most stage/live performances like that the performers would try and keep going with the routine and not draw attention to the fact that something unusual just happened.

I think they knew what they are doing and played their roles nicely.

Big THIS.

That was also one ugly titty...

First of all ....fark you.
Not fiction...her farking exact words were "I am an American Christian"
You were not there so kiss my ass.
Over the last several years in the Yucatan region I have seen numerous groups of American Christian missionaries having their evangelical revivals and doing their best to get the locals involved. Tulum was the first place I witnessed this.
Mexico has a large Catholic population. They have their faith and religion. Let them be.

I posted this in the Puppy Bowl thread, but it's more applicable here.

The only Superbowl halftime show I ever missed was the one with Janet Jackson, because the partygoers wanted to watch Lingerie Bowl instead. Ironically, there was more nudity in the halftime show than in the Lingerie Bowl.

Two things I wonder is one, why did the FCC fine some individual TV stations and not others?  Two, why did they fine anyone at all?  It's not like the managers of those stations knew it was coming.

Bears repeating. People were acting like it was the fall of western civilization or something.
