I'm a left-winger, and I've given up on MSNBC. Their infantile presentation (of views I actually agree with) makes me gag. (I'm looking at you, Al Sharpton.)

That said, this whole tweet controversy is a very VERY big deal, and I hope it's resolved soon.

2014-01-31 09:13:46 AM
They need to bag Sharpton and find another Maddow.  Or two.

2014-01-31 10:26:49 AM
Gah, is there any minor slight that the right wingers won't take completely disproportional umbrage to?

MSNBC needs to grow some balls. Don't apologize for telling the truth, and stop giving a damn if you hurt the poor little teabaggers feelings.

2014-01-31 10:27:39 AM
Okay, so a snarky stupid Tweet caused an inordinate amount of butthurt so now we have a sniveling apology. Are there any grown-ups in charge of this country any more?

No one should have been fired.

Exactly. The proper response to an ultimatum from Reince Priebus is to fax him a scan of your balls.

MSNBC took the high road with the apology and still, by that action, shows that the GOP/Priebus is a whiny baby.

As for MSNBC itself, the rest of it varies widely in quality, but it's hard to to better on cable news than Chris Hayes' and Rachel Maddow's shows.

"Maybe the rightwing will hate it, but everyone else will go awww: the adorable new #Cheerios ad w/ biracial family."

That was considered offensive?  Seriously?  Perhaps the 'maybe' should have been left off.

'On Thursday morning Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus sent a letter of condemnation in which he promised that no RNC officials or surrogates would appear on MSNBC. He urged other Republicans to do likewise unless the network issued a formal apology.'

That's not exactly a policy change.

I still don't see what the problem is. The right wing is defined by their racism, they're farking proud of it.

2014-01-31 12:53:11 PM
I don't watch MSNBC but I am a little disappointed they apologized for this. They didn't direct the comment to the GOP, so it was a bit out of hand for the GOP to take umbrage for it. Although, the fact that the GOP response was so quick and forceful did kind of prove a point about the right's tendency to freak out.

2014-01-31 12:54:15 PM
Oddly, the RNC never said the tweet was incorrect, just offensive.

2014-01-31 12:54:22 PM
yes it is extremely racist to point out that in the past, conservative racists reacted badly to the cheerios commercial featuring a mixed-race family

And this is punishing MSNBC how?

2014-01-31 12:55:44 PM
Hey, has anyone mentioned that Al Sharpton needs to go? he's awful and ruins the credibility of the channel.

Seriously, why would anyone hire him? Are they just pandering to "low information" black democrats or something? his show is insufferable.

2014-01-31 12:57:53 PM

Ambivalence: I don't watch MSNBC but I am a little disappointed they apologized for this. They didn't direct the comment to the GOP, so it was a bit out of hand for the GOP to take umbrage for it. Although, the fact that the GOP response was so quick and forceful did kind of prove a point about the right's tendency to freak out.

It's not like they said 'Republicans', or 'Fox News Watchers', or even 'American Conservatives'.  It can apply to skinhead groups around the world.  But Prebius and Malkin jumped up, said 'Hey, that's us!' and got outraged.. or already were, they usually are.

2014-01-31 12:57:59 PM
"Having revealed themselves as despicable bigots, the folks at MSNBC have now deleted and apologized for their offensive tweet,"

How does pointing out that "some" people on the right wing might not like bi-racial couples make MSNBC bigots?

All this sounds like the tweet hit a little too close to home.

2014-01-31 12:59:54 PM
Commentators and pundits on the right have been publicly saying worse things than this about their opponents for decades, and no one demands apologies unless maybe if it's about an individual. Has Limbaugh or Hannity or anyone like that ever offered an apology for anything?

2014-01-31 12:59:56 PM
Apparently telling the truth is offensive to the GOP. Well of course it is.

2014-01-31 01:00:28 PM
So MSNBC said, essentially, "There's going to be a bi-racial family in a commercial again.  Right-wing nutjobs will have a problem with this."  Didn't some right-wing nut-jobs have a problem before?  What am I missing?

2014-01-31 01:02:19 PM

I'm pretty much done with news.

MSNBC sucks aside from Maddow and is mostly left-wing propaganda.
CNN is unquestionably dumbed down and terrible from top to bottom.
CBS News, shiat those guys can't even get 60 Minutes right anymore.
ABC News - Pretty sure the only news they break is when something happens to someone from the Bachelor shows.
NBC News - Do they still do news?
Fox News is right-wing propaganda.
NPR - Gone way downhill in the past couple of years.
BBC - Probably the best western news agency, and their journalists are jumping ship to work for Al Jazeera.
WaPost/NYT - Can't keep anyone around more than 5 minutes and all their shiat ends up as links from HuffPo anyhow.

We're all going to be getting our scoops from news aggregators from now on I think. It really will be a case of we report you decide.

You are a sad dude, then.  I see nothing wrong or why MSNBC has to apologize.  You are acting like those clowns on Fox and the right-wing echo chamber that sees any slight as equivalent to burning down their church with their family in it.

Give me a break.  Another BS outrage from the right and they hooked you line and sinker.  Stupid.  If you act that way, MSNBC prolly doesn't need you "backing" them anyway, as you have the torsional rigidity of wet tissue paper.

There was nothing wrong with the tweet, and the right acts like spoiled bullies once again, and the spineless left cower in submission.  THAT should be the outrage.

Yeah, Al Jazeera is definitely starting to emerge as a global news power, aren't they. Sadly, there's a lot to be said from an news organization coming from an area in which a number of countries have exploited their natural resources while taking a big oily dump on the lower income people living there. Sadly we've taken those labor and anti-environmental practices back home. 15-20 years from now, it'll be Cairo 2 live from Washington DC.

Say what you will about his other flaws, the guy could dish it back to the Republicans and Fox so viciously it made them blink. One just had to watch the Olbermann / O'Reilly spat to see it start. The bosses at MSNBC should've had a spine and kept him as the attack dog, hired Hayes, kept Maddow, skipped Sharpton, et al.

They literally had the perfect liberal attack dog, but they pissed their pants and fired the guy.

I'd bet money that Steve Kornacki and his producers got called into the principal's office over their Bridgegate coverage before the powers that be decided Christie was a lost cause.

I like Ed.

The people that shiat on him and Sharpton need to realize their broadcasts are aimed at an older demographic than Maddow's or Hayes's. Older working-class folk want their partisan news coverage without the Park Slope, organic, bike-to-work perspective or 15 minutes of contextual ground work.

Considering that the right-wing media constantly dumps on the left for things much worse than this snarky tweet did, I'm sorry that the right can't handle what they dish out on a daily basis.

There is a double standard when it comes to media in this country, but contrary to what the GOP wants you to think, the double standard benefits the right.

They've got some very smart people working there.  They're not necessarily media people (see MHP) so it makes the screen presence a bit off and more likely they'll do something that comes off as easily stupid.

While I don't think MSNBC should necessarily have apologized, taking a random cheap-shot at the right wing in a tweet about a cereal commercial is just stupid.

MSNBC, as a network, is insufferable save Maddow/Hayes/Kornaki, who are some of the best on TV. If they'd follow that model... smart, sharp, fact based reporting... and get rid of Sharpton, Matthews, Harris-Perry, O'Donnell, and everyone on Morning Joe except maybe Barnacle, they'd be better off.

This...

and is mostly left-wing propaganda.

NOT that.  I don't mind having a yin to Fox News' yang; the problem's been the delivery.  A) It's watered down from what it can be because S&P at Comcast care about FNC/the political right getting their feelings hurt over little things like the truth and facts..  B) When your delivery system includes Al Sharpton and Chris Matthews, you've got a problem.

If Fox News didn't exist you'd have a point.

CNN is unquestionably dumbed down and terrible from top to bottom.

...
and they hired that assclown Zucker too.  Seriously, how much will it take for people at TimeWarner to realize they're on the Titanic?

ABC's pretty much in the meh zone.  Ever since Peter Jennings died they've been looking for the next credible newsreader.

NBC News - Do they still do news?

The light version of MSNBC, see also ABC News.

Fox News is right-wing propaganda.

This.

NPR - Gone way downhill in the past couple of years.

If that includes Al Jazeera America then, yeah.

I would say, replace pretty much everybody except Maddow and Kornacki. Chris Hayes needs to get off MSNBC and straight up do "Meet the Press".

I still don't understand why you ended with "Mad?"

I think the 2013 "outrage" was what was utterly fabricated.  The two articles mention asshole comments on YouTube as if that's hard to find or really means much. But apart from demonstrating there are racist assholes on YouTube there was no linkage in any of the articles to any sort of organized right wing upset over the ad.

So when they made that tweet this year it was based on nothing supported by last year's youtube vitriol. And what a stupid tweet in terms of obviously going to backfire on them.

Have you seen the photos posted with Malkin's hashtag? They are actually pretty darn awesome.

So Malkin who may be a stopped clock, jumped in and pwned them. They (NBC) deserved it with that tweet. I tend to defend people that I think are right whether or not I usually agree with them or not. And yes, I realize that often times people in the politics tab find that truly annoying.

And did I say I was mad about anything? I don't think so. Except I don't think the person who made the tweet should have been fired, or the firing made public. I don't think that was anyone's business and social media is young enough and stupid enough we should all mostly agree to stop demanding firings over social media gaffes.

I tend to agree. I don't try to tune in to Hayes as often as I do Maddow, but I think that's just a style preference. He's really good (even better than Maddow) at explaining really complex political issues and making them easy to understand with all the pertinent facts.

Though, I almost forgot the first person they need to fire: Chuck farking Todd. Terrible reporter. Terrible anchor. Terrible person. Just all around terrible.

I don't mean to defend the GOP as not being racist, but they aren't saying the tweet was racist because of "bi-racial" they are crying about MSNBC calling them bigots for accurately implying much of the "right" has a problem with bi-anything.

I don't agree entirely, but between those three that's 14 hours of programming per week. Besides TCM, name another network with that much watchable programming. CC's late block accounts for 6, FX and AMC might each have 3 any given week. PBS? The majors? FOURTEEN HOURS?

The tweet didn't claim that everyone with conservative leanings has a 'deep-visceral hatred' for mixed-race families, just that the rightwingers would make a fuss, just like they did last year about the same commercial.

True, there's no way to know if they'll lose their shiat again, but that it happened last year is a statement of fact, so, it wasn't a slight at all, but rather an observation and a (pretty safe) prediction.

So homophobic/misogynistic rappers are allowed to make millions of dollars, and "Rock the vote" for the DNC but Phil from Duck Dynasty cant reveal his personal feelings towards homosexuality?

Fart_Machine: I noticed you omitted the part about how a sizable percentage of Mississippi Republicans want interracial marriage to be illegal

because it came from some dude's blogspot account.  You mouth breathers wont believe anything posted in Forbes or the WSJ

This.

Yet another bullshiat manufactured outrage where the right wing uses bullying tactics to promote a sense of false equivalence in an attempt to validate Fox News as a reliable news outlet.

Basically anyone who still sees this incident as relevant needs to be berated.

"Maybe the rightwing will hate it, but everyone else will go awww: the adorable new #Cheerios ad w/ biracial family."

THIS is what they got their panties in a knot about? Sounds like the assholes who watch FNC don't like being called out for what they are, including that Little Brown Turncoat Malkin. She's one of the pets they keep around to show their "diversity", being too stupid to realize that A. she isn't white and never will be, and B. if the sh*t hits the fan the righties she sucks up to will not see her as one of them, but just another brown person to be exterminated.

I hope for her sake that she reads up on what happened to Nazi collaborators after the war. Or not.

I remember when everyone even Fox News was talking about how amusing it was that Dubya was dancing on stage at that Aids event.  Except MSNBC.  All they did was to talk about it being wrong for him to be up on that stage dancing while soldiers were dying in war.

Fart_Machine: It came from Public Policy Polling dumbass.  There's even a link in the article.

Oh look - a democrat/progressive funded policy outlet finds data that conservatives are racist.
That poll, by the way surveyed 400 people.  if 45% of them think interracial marriage should be illegal, you've essentially found 180 people living in the deep south who dont like it.
So you form your basis for half the country based on what 180 people in the deep south think.

If you wandered out into traffic and got hit by a bus the world might actually get a little smarter.

Fart_Machine: My those farking goalposts moved to the farking moon

I didn't move the goalposts at all.  You're upset that one person in entertainment doesn't like gays and you dont give a shiat that another person in entertainment (actually most of the sector) doesn't like gays.  It isn't moving the goalposts, it is you having a double-standard.

And if double standards didn't exist, moron liberals like yourself wouldn't have any at all.

Fart_Machine: Google is hard.  They also link to this story in the original article.

from that article:
His daughter's starring role in a Cheerios ad transformed into a starring role in the national conversation about race two weeks ago, when her commercial drew offensive attacks on YouTube.

So some morons on youtube with unknown political leanings make comments about a cheerios ad and this is now just an attribute ascribed to the right in general.

rzrwiresunrise: More pity than scorn for her in this instance.

what is it about someone's personal choice that has no impact on your life that offends you so much?

Fart_Machine: The fact that you believe Twitter is programming is frightening.

MSNBC and other news outlets engage in social media to drive people to view their content.  Though not always programming in and of itself, twitter is a mouthpiece for the network.

So are their results wrong?  Again, you don't know how polls and sampling work do you.  The point wasn't that it was a poll for half the country, the point was that there are still right-wingers who are offended by interracial marriage especially in the south.  So their tweet really wasn't wrong at all.

o5iiawah: I didn't move the goalposts at all. You're upset that one person in entertainment doesn't like gays and you dont give a shiat that another person in entertainment (actually most of the sector) doesn't like gays. It isn't moving the goalposts, it is you having a double-standard.

Um no, the point was that you dismiss the Duck Dynasty guy and are outraged over a tweet from MSNBC which was, at least to gays, far more offensive.  It's you who has the double-standard, not me.  I'm not outraged by either one of them.  Now do some more handwaving.  You're amusing.

o5iiawah: So some morons on youtube with unknown political leanings make comments about a cheerios ad and this is now just an attribute ascribed to the right in general.

Yes, I'm sure those morons on YouTube were totally liberals and not right-wingers like the ones polled who want to see interracial marriage illegal.  Pull you head out of your ass.

o5iiawah: MSNBC and other news outlets engage in social media to drive people to view their content. Though not always programming in and of itself, twitter is a mouthpiece for the network.

So it's not programming.  Very good Cletus, you're learning.

And that was pretty poorly worded on my part.  Phil's public comments were far more offensive to all gays than an MSNBC twitter post which reached far fewer people.

Notice in the original post I made that you snarkily replied to that I focused on the EXPLOITATION of Malkin in right-wing race politics, exploitation to which she seems oblivious. It could be that she refuses to see it since it's made her a ton of money and sometimes one's integrity is worth a best-selling book; or that she doesn't see it because how could they view her that way when she's towed the line for them so loudly all these years? Either way, to them she's a slanty-eyed mudbucket that says all the right things so the right-wing can have their "Some of my best friends are [insert minority here]" poodle to prance about in the dog-and-pony show. It's the same for guys like Allen West, Bobby Jindal...

Neither she nor her "choice" are offensive to me, a fact you didn't get the first time around since your reading skills are somewhere between DUH- and -HURR.
