Wasn't that sketch based on a psych profile that was put together before anyone had any clue what he actually looked like?

It's a framejob. The guy in the sketch is clearly white, while the guy in the mugshot is clearly not.

They should switch from sketch artists to a computer system, so they can get results like this:

Yea, leprechaun or rapist. Am I the only one upset about. the use of quotes? They aren't needed and don't even match the misuse in TFA.

If I ever do something criminal--like murdering my neighbors for playing crap music all day--and end up in a line up downtown, they'll have to hide my very distinguishing nose.

Ok, not distinguishing. More screwed up. (One nostril is huge, the other not so much. It's the result of a childhood accident and inadequate plastic surgery.)

It was based off a security guard's witness account.  In all fairness, though, it was 10 years before they caught him and he was wearing sunglasses and a hoodie, so it probably wasn't a terrible likeness of him at the time.

Darkman?

2014-01-31 06:55:01 AM
In the local paper recently, there were two police sketches of the same sexual assault or rape suspect. One of them showed a white man, the other showed a black man. So that narrows that down in much the same way as saying he must be in Canada or the United States narrows his geographic position on the globe down.

I'm guessing that when they catch the perp he will be of mixed race or perhaps a Mediterranean or West Asian type.

The drawings weren't bad--they were just of two different faces. I would not be surprised that they trigger a witness' memory.

Remember how you often think two people look alike but others can't see it or the ressemblence fades if you see them together or in other photographs, etc.? Well, the human brain is weird. It is both remarkably good at catching the gist of what it sees and at being wrong. Our ability to recognize faces is one of our weird stupid human tricks.

The sketch in TFA was uncannily accurate, except for every single feature on the guy's face.

Yeah, there was an old SNL sketch where they were trying to put the sketch together and the sketch artist was like, "well I'm not really good drawing eyes", "Well just give him really big glasses", "And hair gives me trouble", "So put a big cap on him. And he probably has a creepy mustache, they all have creepy mustaches"....what made the bit funny was that at the time they plastered that sketch everywhere you had the TV on with HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN???.

Myself, I'd be at a loss if someone asked me to describe someone. I wouldn't be good at it, even someone I knew intimately. "I'm pretty sure he had a nose....".
