I hate Daylight Savings Time. I hate sunshine. I've lived in Florida almost my entire life.

The move would mean an extra hour of daylight during the winter months...

That's an awful idea.  However, I would be amenable to completely doing away with daylight savings time and staying on normal time year round.

At the tone, the time will be 6:35 Eastern Standard Time

You're confused, DST is the one where the day starts an hour earlier, regular time is the one where you get to sleep the extra hour.

FTFA: However, opponents have argued in recent years that gain is offset by an increased use of the A/C.

I've never understood this argument. I set my thermostat to a comfortable temperature and just leave it that way all the time. The time of day the sun goes up or down doesn't make me change the settings on my thermostat. It also doesn't affect what time I go to bed, or to work, or anything else for that matter.

Why don't we just follow Arizona's lead (I can't believe I just said that) and just settle on Standard Time permanently? Let's stop playing with the damned clocks.

No, DST moves light to later in the day instead of wasting it at 6 a.m.

My state may be extremely backwards in many, many ways, but at least we don't have to fark with the stupid clocks twice a year. All the rest of you idiots changing your clocks throw off our TV schedules.

I guess that's one way to look at it.  Extra light in the evening doesn't really matter to me, but I hate having to wake up an hour early.

Needs the hero tag. Fark those early risers who enjoy getting up early. I like getting home from work and it not being pitch dark.

I'd be perfectly fine adjusting things so daybreak happens around 9am, about an hour before I get up.

Ive always thought haveing 2 time zones in a state is just silly. Maybe Exceptions for TX and AK because they are huge.

This would be awesome.  I wouldn't have to bike home in the dark half of the year.

Yes, because thats what the country needs. More timezones and variants.

I remember when we had year-round daylight savings time in 1973-74. It was awful. It was still very dark at 8am in January.

One time zone per state is more the exception than the rule for the states that border two zones.

I would love this and have been advocating it for years. I hate "normal" time, especially in the fall when all of a sudden it gets dark an hour earlier, as if it doesn't get dark early enough in the winter anyway.

I have been advocating slowing the rotation of the Earth for years. If all the Chinese just run in opposite direction of the Earth's rotation, it could be done.

He also cites a 2008 report to Congress that concluded an extension of daylight time saved about 0.5% of the nation's electricity per day.

Wow, 0.5% per day?

So, 365 days in a year.  365 * 0.5 = 182.5%

Guys, this could solve all our energy needs and allow us to sell the excess on the global market.

Or maybe it would just save 0.5% of the nations electricity per year.

Or maybe the farking idiot should not have said "per day".

Only morans believe daytime savings time has actual any use for reducing energy burning.

The malls love that extra summer daylight for your shopping needs, as you get bored after work with that 4-5 hours of daylight to kill. It's a conspiracy.
/Emergency services love that groggy population hurting themselves at the time change.

this is a great idea.

sunlight later in the day is better.  there is nothing good that happens in the morning.  you go to work.  no amount of fancy breakfast or coffee will make up for the cruelty that is necessity.  but, in the evening, you get off work!  now there is at least a small possibility for happiness.  let there be light

Who the fark watches tv on a set schedule besides geezers?

And I'm tired of the basement-dwelling vampires who want to get rid of DST. Those of us with lives like the extra hour of light in the evening to play softball or golf in the summer.

What's silliest of all is the entirety of China being in one timezone.  So over there by the stans you get a nice 10AM sunrise this time of year.

Yeah all of China on the same time zone would be like the entire CONUS being on one.

I'm probably alone on this but I think we should divide the planet into 360 time zones, and have all doors electronically monitored/controlled such that no one can be outside between their local 8pm and 7am times.

Mostly because I want to see how fast people will drive under such extreme conditions.

2014-01-30 10:59:10 PM
More importantly it seriously farks up TV schedules. Half the year things on at 10 or 11pm would be on at 11pm and midnight, etc.. And live events on the west coast are already late enough. Northern states that would still be in eastern standard time are significantly farther east than FL and being southern gives FL more sunshine in general anyways both in weather and in closeness to the equator.. So that bill can just go die now thx.

Arizona already does this. Clark County Nevada should too.

That's...not how math works.

Let's pretend for simplicity's sake that the nation uses 100 jiggawatts per day. That report says that DST allows us to save 0.5 jiggawatts per day and use 99.5 instead of 100.

0.5Jw x 365 = 182.5Jw saved over a year. Yes, that's 182.5% of the power used in a DAY, but only 0.5% of the power used in a YEAR (36,500 Jw).

Saying it saves 0.5% per year isn't any more correct than saying it saves 0.5% per day. The math comes out the same.

I've been reading about a proposal to reduce the continental United States to two timezones, using Central Standard Time permanently for the zones currently using Central and Eastern, and to use Mountain Standard Time permanently for zones using Mountain and Pacific. Effectively, Daylight Savings Time would be permanently in effect for two existing timezones. The argument in favor of this stems from from the staggering of shift start-times and television scheduling across the country- where I live starting work at 7:00AM and leaving at 3:30PM is common, which is akin to 9-5:30 on the east coast. Switching the schedule permanently to two timezones shouldn't be that difficult to grow accustomed to.

We have the technology now that we could make time completely dynamic and have sunrise and sunset at exactly the same time through the whole year.

Might be a trick to implement with mechanical clocks.  But for digital it's a no-brainer.

/no, I haven't thought this cunning plan all the way through
