If you're part of a crew, nobody ever tells you that they're going to kill you, doesn't happen that way. There weren't any arguments or curses like in the movies. See, your murderers come with smiles, they come as your friends, the people who've cared for you all of your life. And they always seem to come at a time that you're at your weakest and most in need of their help.

Wait, I thought the "families" had the whole "no women, no children" thing? There goes one of the few key distinctions between the mob and the POS street thugs that couldn't care less whether a baby and stroller are in the crossfire. It's a slippery stairway, that..

My first thought as well.  They figured the kid would be a problem sooner or later.

Like the Godfather, where Don Ciccio killed Antonio Andolini, then son Paolo, and nearly Vito.
But Vito's Mom put a knife to Don Ciccio's throat and Vito got away.

So you know this is terrible, terrible, terrible, but it's not like there's no Mafia precedence at all for killing everyone in the vicinity of their target.  Especially children who might grow up to come after them later.   The times they assassinated by bombing surely killed bystanders too.

The killing of such a young child has sparked debate in Italy about how to protect children growing up in the shadow of the country's crime syndicates in the impoverished south.

Or you could just execute every last motherfarking one of them. Problem solved.

I thought one of the rules of the mafia was don't create a scene and attract unnecessary attention..  Killing a child will do that.

Maybe I am confusing the American five famlies rules with the Italian mafia.

First that was Sicily. It was done because of family vendettas. And those were boys coming of age, not three years old.

This feels more like Mexican cartel rules.

In Sicily this asshole vendetta stuff never really stopped. Oh, it sure went lower key, but it still remains.
Effing backwards thinking assholes. They will kill entire families to make their point and feel they have won.

It bothers me no end that a percentage of my lineage crosses there.

They also had a NO DRUGS, NO PROSTITUTION rule not too long ago.

Gangsters are full of shiat.

Scary, but full of shiat.

If I found myself "at war" with a crew I would definitely kill their kids, if necessary. Otherwise my enemy would exploit this RULE.

I just finished the book "Gomorrah" (also saw the film a few years ago) and it seemed as blood thirsty as the Sicilian mafia families are, the ones out of Naples seem to have the Sicilians beat in terms of pure ruthlessness. Like what we see as mafia in the US - the so-called five families, is almost laughably small time hoodish compared to the Camorra.  I was pretty shocked how far everything in that area of the country is totally locked up by the Camorra families - politicians, sectors of industry (trucking, garbage, construction, trade with China, fashion and even milk(!).

Pretty good book and movie as well.

And back some years wars had "Gentlemen's agreements".
There was a certain respect for each other and an unwritten understanding about going too far and crossing certain lines, so-to-speak.
For reference on how it was please see: Christmas truce of 1914.

Progress. It's not all it's cracked up to be.

They ARE indeed more functionally ruthless and harsh.
The Sicilian sects are, however, more stuck in that bizzarro frame of demented mind that places 'tradition above all' on a pedestal.
They actually BELIEVE that crap. STILL!

Yes, that was sort of touched upon in the book where the Sicilians were criticized by the Naples-based clans for being too traditional and that effected their ability to expand into more seemingly legit (or atleast legally grey area) areas of business and work with the political establishment.

If you go there wear a neck brace because you will snap your head off at the shoulders from shaking it in disbelief.
The donkeys there have better sense than the jackasses riding the donkeys.
Sicily is the Appalachian backwater of Italy. And the women.......well forget it. Hot like the sun, crazier than Jodi Arias crossbred with Casey Anthony.

I am saddened but not shocked to read this article. Nobody will be charged. Know that.
Italy's government is the best bargain you can buy in politicians. Seriously. They are unapologetically corrupt. Strictly highest bidder.
