I know of about a hundred people on fb (at least) who use a version of their Pottermore login as their fb name, so they've evidently been letting anonymity run free for a while now.

Too little too late, or so let's hope.

/fb free, always

Anybody notice that now both "getting... a little pussy" and "shiatcock" are on the main Fark pages today?

Are standards changing?

I'm a noob so maybe not.

Well you could set up a "community."  That way you could post all you want on FB but not give away who you are.  Of course you would have "likes" and not "friends."  Alternatively you could set up a normal account with a name that is not obviously a fake.

2014-01-30 05:19:40 PM
Facebook didn't "allow" it, but that doesn't stop anyone from creating an anonymous page with fake pictures.

They aren't fooling anyone.

I'm anonymous only to the degree that I've used "Lordargent" or "Lord Argent" as my login for decades and own the domain name and the gmail address and have it on caller cards.

Does this mean we can look forward to more AnnieandJack Smith shared accounts too?

It's probably in Facebook's own interest.
Kicked out people could just register a new account and all the data connected to the old, now inactive account would be worthless.
Having lots of information about someone using a false name sounds more useful to sell advertising than having the real name but no data.

When facebook was new it was not easy to be anonymous since you had to use a legitimate college email (originally only harvard).  It wasn't until I had it for over a year before they even let high schoolers then another year after that when it was open to everyone

Profits for Facebook reached $523 million, up from $64 million a year ago.

Yeah, they're going to do whatever they want.

Ok, explain to me this "anonymous" problem.

I had to get a page for a training conference so the group could converse.  I started one with fake information, name, and pictures.  They know who I am.

No-one else can find me--isn't that the definition of anonymous?

/Don't have a real page--don't want one.
//Is this about locking up your "real" page or something?

Standards will have changed as soon as Fark lets us write "shiatcock" in a headline without farking filtering like some commie coont, dammit.

I have the great misfortune to share my name with a noted white supremacist.  Any time I use it online it attracts all sorts of nastiness, and I avoided Facething as a result.  However the rest of my friends and family all use it daily - and after I darn near missed Christmas this year because they forgot to email me, I finally signed up under a fake name.  Their policy can kiss the hairiest part of my backside.

Yes, they are changing. I've lurked for years, and it's become a slightly different website, but it's better than most out there.  I mean, if someone starts to go nuts for real on fark, they're gone, which is good. I've noticed that there's not a shortage of highly intelligent people *and* moroans [sic] galore.

Christmas is usually on Dec 25th each year. But you should check with your timezone.

Translation: we are able to gather enough data on you from various sources that we'll know you real name regardless of what you enter. So go ahead Lovescarribeanboys99, post all you want. We won't tell anyone which radio show you host but we're still going to show you targeted ads for viagra and Doctor Daffy's Drug Depot.

It was a good idea early one, but once Facebook comments spread everywhere it became clear that people don't care about anonymity.  There's a lot of farktards in the world, and they don't care if you know who they are.

Yeah, look at all the sites that show people posting, under their known name and with a picture of their face next to the comment, comments about how someone should "take out" that n-word Obummer.

People do seriously think they are just among friends on Facebook, and nothing will get outside that circle.

In the future, there is no Facebook. There's only, like, instant virtual telepathy. You only take off your Google glasses to mate at the AppleDome, and all the rest is just data. I am future drone. I am future drone.

Since all the social media pipes everything directly to the nsa & other interested orgs it doesn't matter anymore.

Imagine that there was actual anonymity, no nsa, no hacking, true anonymity in searches, research, email, postings; maybe a whole Nation, Continent or other Planet that attracted citizens to live there because Freedom.
.... IMAGINE

FBi could have you charged with "impersonation" the way its set up now; if they want new customers, they will need to make the unofficial permission 'legal' according to their TOS.

There is a need for anonymity to prevent stalking & other forms of internet rage among the common subjects.

i'm a long-dead almost famous Spaniard on facebook.

2014-01-31 02:10:48 AM
started FB with my real name (one of the very late adopters) then after a time switched it to My road name (not net name). it only gets shut down if someone actually gets a bug up their hind quarter and reports it. i guess was an ok idea at the beginning but really now it just makes it easier for people to get stalked in the real world and puts people at risk.

i know plenty of people on FB that do not use their real names for their own protection from things like past rapists and molesters

That's just enough not to be anonymous at all.

Of course not.  Any one of the conference organizers or attendees who as you say "know who you are" can break that thin veil with a casual mention or photograph.  How long do you think it takes Facebook or Google or ad networks or your ISP or random web crawlers or the three letter agencies to instantly match that with everything else they have filed under your true identity or mine?

There's no real anonymity but it's nice to try to at least limit the exposure, even if in the end it's for naught.  Believing that something as trivial as a fake name on Facebook or Fark is any form of real anonymity is foolish.  You don't know who I am, but it's quite likely that anyone who really wants to does.  And that sucks.

This sort of statement used to be paranoid.  Now it's just a proven fact of life.
