Unlike MSNBC, however, Fox is the only one in the survey to score below "No News" as one's news outlet.

I thought to myself: how did this happen? Whatever happened to just putting on headphones and working out?

I'm in the same situation and I do just what you say: put on your headphones and zone out.

Fox News without the sound is an interesting study in body language.  When they're talking to or about a Republican, all the on air hosts smile, sit back in their chairs relaxed and give a lot of welcoming gestures.  When it's Obama or another Democrat, they sit up straight, right on the edge of their seats, shake their heads and point a lot.

K0. Americans now have more ways than ever before to get their news about politics and world affairs. I'm going to read you a list of news sources. As I read the list, just say "yes" if you got news from that source any time in the past week.

And you can claim bragging rights if your viewers get almost 2 right?

Questions were asked between February 6 and February 12, 2012.

To the best of your knowledge, have the opposition groups protesting in Egypt been successful in removing Hosni Mubarak?

How about the opposition groups in Syria? Have they been successful in removing Bashar al-Assad?

Some countries in Europe are deeply in debt, and have had to be bailed out by other countries. To the best of your knowledge, which country has had to spend the most money to bail out European countries?

There have been increasing talks about economic sanctions against Iran. What are these sanctions supposed to do?

Which party has the most seats in the House of Representatives right now? (30% of Lean Republican said Democrats, all other groups were around 10%, really strange)

In December, House Republicans agreed to a short-term extension of a payroll tax cut, but only if President Obama agreed to do what? (Open-Ended)

It took a long time to get the final results of the Iowa caucuses for Republican candidates. In the end, who was declared the winner? (Open-Ended) (At the time, Santorum had won the vote, though after the survey, Paul won the delegates)

How about the New Hampshire Primary? Which Republican won that race? (Open-Ended)

According to the figures, about what percentage of Americans are currently unemployed? (Open-Ended)

Fox News and MSNBC have to come on every day and give hours and hours of programming full telling viewers how the other side is wrong and somehow their viewers think this can be done without ever using cherry picked data, exaggerations and logical fallacies.  Judging by so many of the above comments it also leaves viewers believing that the other side (a.k.a. the bad guys) are idiotic and morally inferior, while making themselves righteous and well informed.  It doesn't matter which of those two channels you're watching, what it's really doing is filling you with anger and teaching you how to justify hatred.

In the mean time the people you're watching on Fox News and MSNBC are becoming millionaires.  You're being used.  Turn off your TV and clean your hatred for half the population of the United States out of your soul.  Just because you're angry doesn't guarantee you're informed.  It doesn't matter if you're Liberal or Conservative, both sides teach that hating is wrong.

//Going to go eat some Cheerios now.

That was going to be my question.  You have an article (old rerun) from a left wing rag that finds that viewers of a network considered to be right wing are dumb.  I can't even express how shocked I am that they would come to that conclusion.

Maybe Fox doesn't "teach to the test."

Objectively, the constant disinformation pushed on Fox News can be reviewed and appreciated without a study like this. This is also hardly the first of its kind. In my time I have seen seven separate studies demonstrating that people who use Fox News as a regular and primary news source are not only ignorant of, but tragically misinformed about, the world around them, from thinking there was a direct link between Saddam Hussein and Al Queda, (a relationship regularly implied by Fox leading up to the second invasion, for obvious reasons,) to the numbers believing Obama is a practicing Muslim. 67%, polled, thought the USA found WMDs in Iraq, and it goes on.

There isn't any maybe about it. Objective, informed thinkers can learn the facts in seconds with a little research, and not just from "librul" sources. The only way to be ignorant of the information is, of course, the very problem being demonstrated here, isolation and ignorance from a variety of quality sources of information.

In all seriousness, watching a "news" show that straight-up misinforms you (Fox) WOULD make you dumber than someone who watches no news at all.

The no-news-watching people's answers to questions would probably reflect the fact that they have no intellectual curiosity (Don't know), which is not great, but is certainly preferable to getting all your information from a bunch of shrieking hysterics who sit around all day long jerking each other off about how much they hate the poors and the black president.

Also, this study only counts people who watch ONLY ONE NEWS SOURCE. Those are likely the dumber ones.

I bet there are plenty of people who watch Rachel Maddow after, say The News Hour.  This doesn't count them.

Probably many less people watch Hannity after The News Hour.

In other words, FOX viewers tend toward being single-source news viewers, while other outlets probably have more of a mix.  I have no stats to back this up other than personal experience.

You make a fair point. There was a lot of talk ~5 years ago about how Fox News viewers, by a wide margin, were more likely than the general public to believe WMDs had been found in Iraq, which I always took as simply proving Fox News viewers were more inclined to believe that sort of thing in the first place, which hardly could have been in doubt (as opposed to the received wisdom which was that Fox News was leading its viewers to believe it).

Still, on this survey, like the Iraq survey, all I can say is that it means something bad about either Fox News or its viewers, or, most likely, both.
