How nice to be a Farkmod, or whatever they're now called, and give a higher percentage of green-lights to untruthful, hurtful, trolly little lib propaganda stories.

Maybe you could do a survey of two homos, and print that 100% of guys now like blowing each other, and the sad thing is, Fark would believe it because their minds are enslaved by the principles of 0b0wel and turdaphilia.

Why doesn't someone run THOSE numbers.

i bet Fox viewers excel at those sorts of questions.

In all seriousness, watching a "news" show that straight-up misinforms you (Fox) WOULD make you dumber than someone who watches no news at all.

The no-news-watching people's answers to questions would probably reflect the fact that they have no intellectual curiosity (Don't know), which is not great, but is certainly preferable to getting all your information from a bunch of shrieking hysterics who sit around all day long jerking each other off about how much they hate the poors and the black president.

Q: Will the Affordable Care Act help you or hurt you?

No-news guy: (shrugs) I don't know.

Huh.  So, given trends, I'm going to guess Fox news viewers have gotten dumber(fewer legit obama scandals now than then, which are the only things they ever know anything true about) and MSNBC viewers have also gotten worse, given their deterioration.

No News Exposure 1.22 1.28
Just FOX News1.04 1.08
Just CNN 1.26 1.33
Just MSNBC 1.26 1.23
Just Talk Radio 1.35 1.57
Just Daily Show 1.42 1.60
Just Sunday Show 1.47 1.52
NPR 1.51 1.97

However, the self-reported ideological is also important to look at:
Effects of Ideological Media - Domestic, International
Liberal watching FOX News 0.82 0.81
Conservative watching FOX News 1.28 1.39
Liberal listening to Talk Radio 1.28 1.63
Conservative listening to Talk Radio 1.43 1.52

JerseyTim: I feel like the MSNBC one would be higher if they just ditched Chris Matthews.

And Sharpton. I mean, I sorta see where they are trying for a target demographic there, but he probably turns off more people than he attracts to the network.
And Scarborough. He occasionally hits the Tea Party, but is still a water boy for the Republican party.
Schultz is ok in small doses, which is what he is now. Watching him covering union stuff is pretty good.

/CM just talks over his guests like O'Riley. CM is ok when he is just talking (with no guests) about some of the stuff he knows about. His recent pimping of his book was pretty good.

I'm in the same situation and I do just what you say: put on your headphones and zone out.

Fox News without the sound is an interesting study in body language.  When they're talking to or about a Republican, all the on air hosts smile, sit back in their chairs relaxed and give a lot of welcoming gestures.  When it's Obama or another Democrat, they sit up straight, right on the edge of their seats, shake their heads and point a lot.

super_grass: Correlation does not equal causation, and this isn't a before/after thing where people who watched no TV news scoring lower after watching FNC. They were mostly likely below the non-watchers to begin with.

The correlation does not equal causation bit is true, but your conclusion may not be right.  It could very well be that being fed a diet of misinformation does cause one to be less correctly informed about world events than not watching any news.

But yeah, I agree that this conclusion can't be proven from the data.

Yes, but the data set reported in the article (assuming we can trust the source) is only people who answered that they watched only one news source.

FTFA:  They found that someone who watched only Fox News would be expected to answer 1.04 domestic questions correctly compared to 1.22 for those who watched no news at all.  Those watching only "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" answered 1.42 questions correctly and people who only listened to NPR or only watched Sunday morning political talk shows answered 1.51 questions correctly. In terms of international news, people correctly answered an average of 1.8 of 4 questions.

it's pretty much how my mother in law lives 24/7. it's really quite disturbing yet hilarious.

my wife hates it when we go visit and her mom starts in. i whip out my mp3 player and pop the earbuds in, or i go work on their car. she has to sit and actually listen. what's remarkable is how much less she says anything at all during these times. she's learned that non-reaction is the swiftest way to defuse her mother.

which makes her the only person in her family besides her younger brother to figure it out.
