Oh look, it's this story again.

2014-01-30 04:23:35 PM
But what about CNN?

2014-01-30 04:24:12 PM
I check the Fox mobile site every morning so I know what the outrage du jour will be at work.

You're jealous because Sarah's pretty.

2014-01-30 04:24:56 PM
Unlike MSNBC, however, Fox is the only one in the survey to score below "No News" as one's news outlet.

2014-01-30 04:25:05 PM
I was at the gym this morning. They have a wall of flatscreens, all tuned to some 24/7 news channel.

I thought to myself: how did this happen? Whatever happened to just putting on headphones and working out?

2014-01-30 04:25:22 PM
Fox News might make me less informed, but the important thing is that it makes me more infromed.

2014-01-30 04:26:01 PM
Correlation does not equal causation, and this isn't a before/after thing where people who watched no TV news scoring lower after watching FNC. They were mostly likely below the non-watchers to begin with.

Don't ever, ever let a journalist interpret statistics for you.

CNN viewers refused to fill out the survey and instead just linked to some random twitter feeds.

Or maybe FOX News viewers understand that your ability to answer pertinent questions about current world events is in no way a measure of how informed you are?

MSNBC is equal to CNN, and way ahead of Fox.

You make a fair point. There was a lot of talk ~5 years ago about how Fox News viewers, by a wide margin, were more likely than the general public to believe WMDs had been found in Iraq, which I always took as simply proving Fox News viewers were more inclined to believe that sort of thing in the first place, which hardly could have been in doubt (as opposed to the received wisdom which was that Fox News was leading its viewers to believe it).

Still, on this survey, like the Iraq survey, all I can say is that it means something bad about either Fox News or its viewers, or, most likely, both.

If I may play devil's advocate, doesn't Fox have the highest ratings out of all of those [except "No News" obviously]?

I believe one of the basic axioms of humanity we can all agree on is that the average person is farking stupid. Given that, it stands to reason that the larger the group, the more stupid people there are.

QED, libulardos. Math I do to make myself feel better!

It's performance is still abysmal. The fact that it does better than Fox isn't because it's more informative - it's because slightly smarter people watch it to begin with.

2014-01-30 04:33:49 PM
I think the more important part is how The Daily Show has more informed viewers.

2014-01-30 04:34:08 PM
I'd be interested in seeing how many of those surveyed only watched news from one source period. separated by network of course. I think Fox would probably reign supreme in loyalty.

2014-01-30 04:34:25 PM
So with Fox less than no news on both charts mean their news is less than zero?  And, come on MSNBC, you're not trying!

2014-01-30 04:34:34 PM
Also, this study only counts people who watch ONLY ONE NEWS SOURCE. Those are likely the dumber ones.

I bet there are plenty of people who watch Rachel Maddow after, say The News Hour.  This doesn't count them.

Probably many less people watch Hannity after The News Hour.

In other words, FOX viewers tend toward being single-source news viewers, while other outlets probably have more of a mix.  I have no stats to back this up other than personal experience.

In all seriousness, watching a "news" show that straight-up misinforms you (Fox) WOULD make you dumber than someone who watches no news at all.

The no-news-watching people's answers to questions would probably reflect the fact that they have no intellectual curiosity (Don't know), which is not great, but is certainly preferable to getting all your information from a bunch of shrieking hysterics who sit around all day long jerking each other off about how much they hate the poors and the black president.

I stand corrected. You're right, the graphs show the number of correct responses for people who had:

No News Exposure 1.22 1.28
Just FOX News1.04 1.08
Just CNN 1.26 1.33
Just MSNBC 1.26 1.23
Just Talk Radio 1.35 1.57
Just Daily Show 1.42 1.60
Just Sunday Show 1.47 1.52
NPR 1.51 1.97

However, the self-reported ideological is also important to look at:
Effects of Ideological Media - Domestic, International
Liberal watching FOX News 0.82 0.81
Conservative watching FOX News 1.28 1.39
Liberal listening to Talk Radio 1.28 1.63
Conservative listening to Talk Radio 1.43 1.52
Liberal watching MSNBC 1.89 1.64
Conservative watching MSNBC 0.71 0.86

And Sharpton. I mean, I sorta see where they are trying for a target demographic there, but he probably turns off more people than he attracts to the network.
And Scarborough. He occasionally hits the Tea Party, but is still a water boy for the Republican party.
Schultz is ok in small doses, which is what he is now. Watching him covering union stuff is pretty good.

/CM just talks over his guests like O'Riley. CM is ok when he is just talking (with no guests) about some of the stuff he knows about. His recent pimping of his book was pretty good.
//hopefully they'll keep pushing these younger people whose shows keep improving.

Just sayin'.

You lucky bastard.  Anderson Cooper swings by every so often and taps on my windows while I'm trying to sleep, which I don't mind so much, But freaking Wolf Blitzer's built a nest out in my garage and I can't shoo him out the door without him snarling at me.  And don't even get me started on what Greta Van Susteren did to my drapes.

The correlation does not equal causation bit is true, but your conclusion may not be right.  It could very well be that being fed a diet of misinformation does cause one to be less correctly informed about world events than not watching any news.

But yeah, I agree that this conclusion can't be proven from the data.

No it didn't. It asked this question (Source, PDF):

K0. Americans now have more ways than ever before to get their news about politics and world affairs. I'm going to read you a list of news sources. As I read the list, just say "yes" if you got news from that source any time in the past week.
[ROTATE within categories]
NPR
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
CNN
Fox News
MSNBC

A National News Broadcast
A Talk Radio Show
A Local TV News Broadcast
A Sunday Morning Political News Show
A Local Newspaper
A National newspaper, like the New York Times or USA Today
A Political Blog or News Website

Yes, but the data set reported in the article (assuming we can trust the source) is only people who answered that they watched only one news source.

FTFA:  They found that someone who watched only Fox News would be expected to answer 1.04 domestic questions correctly compared to 1.22 for those who watched no news at all.  Those watching only "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" answered 1.42 questions correctly and people who only listened to NPR or only watched Sunday morning political talk shows answered 1.51 questions correctly. In terms of international news, people correctly answered an average of 1.8 of 4 questions.

which makes her the only person in her family besides her younger brother to figure it out.

Nice false equivalency, trollmitter.

MSNBC and CNN watches don't appear to be statistically significantly different than no news people. Fox News watchers are significantly worse.

Has anyone asked to see the questions yet? A bias in the questions is not out of the realm of possibilities. Also, anyone who relies on a single source for all of their news, I don't care what network, is someone who is not wanting to be well informed.  They just listen to what they want to hear.

//Going to go eat some Cheerios now.

Slate should get the memo that "bias" doesn't always mean "stupid". Doesn't really matter which "side" the reporting comes from, or no side at all... as long as it's the truth. Truth, as in "backed up with facts, evidence and solid reporting coupled with intelligent writing", and not a bunch of blonde bimbettes on a studio sofa starting every other story or sentence with "y'know, some people say", "I've heard", "some people believe that", or "is it true that?".

That was going to be my question.  You have an article (old rerun) from a left wing rag that finds that viewers of a network considered to be right wing are dumb.  I can't even express how shocked I am that they would come to that conclusion.

Objectively, the constant disinformation pushed on Fox News can be reviewed and appreciated without a study like this. This is also hardly the first of its kind. In my time I have seen seven separate studies demonstrating that people who use Fox News as a regular and primary news source are not only ignorant of, but tragically misinformed about, the world around them, from thinking there was a direct link between Saddam Hussein and Al Queda, (a relationship regularly implied by Fox leading up to the second invasion, for obvious reasons,) to the numbers believing Obama is a practicing Muslim. 67%, polled, thought the USA found WMDs in Iraq, and it goes on.

There isn't any maybe about it. Objective, informed thinkers can learn the facts in seconds with a little research, and not just from "librul" sources. The only way to be ignorant of the information is, of course, the very problem being demonstrated here, isolation and ignorance from a variety of quality sources of information.

2014-01-30 06:58:27 PM
Fox News and MSNBC have to come on every day and give hours and hours of programming full telling viewers how the other side is wrong and somehow their viewers think this can be done without ever using cherry picked data, exaggerations and logical fallacies.  Judging by so many of the above comments it also leaves viewers believing that the other side (a.k.a. the bad guys) are idiotic and morally inferior, while making themselves righteous and well informed.  It doesn't matter which of those two channels you're watching, what it's really doing is filling you with anger and teaching you how to justify hatred.

In the mean time the people you're watching on Fox News and MSNBC are becoming millionaires.  You're being used.  Turn off your TV and clean your hatred for half the population of the United States out of your soul.  Just because you're angry doesn't guarantee you're informed.  It doesn't matter if you're Liberal or Conservative, both sides teach that hating is wrong.

Questions were asked between February 6 and February 12, 2012.

To the best of your knowledge, have the opposition groups protesting in Egypt been successful in removing Hosni Mubarak?

How about the opposition groups in Syria? Have they been successful in removing Bashar al-Assad?

Some countries in Europe are deeply in debt, and have had to be bailed out by other countries. To the best of your knowledge, which country has had to spend the most money to bail out European countries?

There have been increasing talks about economic sanctions against Iran. What are these sanctions supposed to do?

Which party has the most seats in the House of Representatives right now? (30% of Lean Republican said Democrats, all other groups were around 10%, really strange)

In December, House Republicans agreed to a short-term extension of a payroll tax cut, but only if President Obama agreed to do what? (Open-Ended)

It took a long time to get the final results of the Iowa caucuses for Republican candidates. In the end, who was declared the winner? (Open-Ended) (At the time, Santorum had won the vote, though after the survey, Paul won the delegates)

How about the New Hampshire Primary? Which Republican won that race? (Open-Ended)

According to the figures, about what percentage of Americans are currently unemployed? (Open-Ended)

My work has Fox News playing but on mute with closed captioning. I noticed this activity too, complete one-sidedness. ESPECIALLY with the head nodding/shaking. Democrat policy stated with stern faces and vigorous head-shakes "No". Republican policy with beatific smiles and slow nods "yes."
Another thing is that all of the captions/headlines will not say any actual facts, but always something like "Concerns about __" or "Potential warnings about changes to __"  Oh don't forget the ever ubiquitous "ALERT ALERT ALERT" flash and the instant downward stock market updates. I can't remember when I saw immediate green arrow updates.
I pointed that last fact out to one of my more conservative co-workers his intelligent response: "It ain't never going up, that's why." he then laughed at me. I pointed out that the Dow was at a record high, he didn't have a soundbite response to that.
