blatz514: Far Cough: So, as I was saying... MANY Fark threads are still running under TEN COMMENTS per thread.

Maybe some attention should be paid to the quality and quantity of Fark web site content, and traffic thereto, before trying to branch out with video that no one really wanted?

/sweat
/dead man's balls
/good luck?

Greening 9 threads at once doesn't help.

Fark's fallen victim to several minuses:
- loss of AWs
- more frequent moderator action
- more competition (Reddit and Facebook, particularly)

WTFark is a fine idea, incorporating comments. But for it to hold value, it must have more of its own added value (unique commentary, jokes, etc).

I'd say it has more to do with the fact that there's so much trolling, and not enough witty or informative posters any more.  The thread about the kid who tried to commit suicide is a good example of trolling that is just not, in my honest opinion, conducive to good discussion.

I've made a few comments recently and have had people take them out of context in an effort to start a flame war.  I've noticed some Farkers saying they have over a hundred people on their ignore list.

I'm only going to speak for myself here, but it's just not worth posting any more if a few people are going to turn things into a flame war.  It's too frustrating and my time would be better spent elsewhere.

I haven't seen spent miles post in a while, and that makes me sad.

Klippoklondike: I liked it, though I still like the idea of having the host sitting at an empty bar with a beer instead of the greenscreen.  Bar + beer = the essence of fark.

Yes. As the flicker and glow of the local/national news/sports/entertainment tv channel courses over her face and we hear the soundbites of the day, comments from other patrons at the bar pop up on screen as though she is hearing others having a laugh at the shiat that passes for tv these days. Perhaps even it's coming from the guy at the end of the bar trying to hit on her by trying to be clever.

Kind of like this:

By no means do I consider myself an expert on these things, but here's how it feels to me:

You haven't picked an audience yet or you aren't communicating who these are meant for properly.

I've been reading this site for a long time.  I enjoy the dry/sarcastic/witty humor from the headlines mixed with the fact that it's related to the actual news.  I also like that I can more or less glean the feeling of the article based on how the headline was written.

I'm on here most days, multiple times per day.  I saw the coffee house/cat pettery headline, didn't really care to read the full article, didn't really need to read the thread, moved on.

For me, that means rehashing (briefly) the article and then presenting user comments about it isn't really worth my time.  I already wasn't interested in the article to begin with, I don't need to see it again unless you're going to add some new humor to it or some new way of looking at it.  Instead there was a "San Francisco is full of gays" joke.

If this is meant to be a review of the news from the last day/week, it needs to be about more than one or two articles.  If it's meant to have a broader appeal I think you need to amp up the humor or the insight (or both of course).  I need a reason to watch it and not just read the thread that it's about.

I did like the production quality and the presenter.  The graphics fit, the backgrounds worked, etc.  So it isn't all bad, I just don't like the content as it is now.

2014-01-30 12:24:50 PM
It's an okay idea, I guess.  However, I can't shake the feeling that it's a lot like cutting or some form of self-harm that Fark is doing for attention.

Strangely, though, I want it to work.

2014-01-30 12:25:14 PM
Here are two tips:

1.) Pick threads that were funny, don't just choose something because you think the topic will appeal to everyone
2.) Don't try to write the jokes yourselves, because nothing in any of that was funny.  If you are taking only comments from a bad thread, then they won't be funny as you can see

So look for something that people were funny in and then use all their jokes.  It's the only chance you have because I hate to break it to you, but you're not funny.

This is the problem...Fark itself is not funny. TFers - and to some extent liters - are funny. Fark is like a comedy club - the actual brick and mortar club. Making a comedy show about a building instead of the comedians would be pretty dumb.

One thing he does that keeps things moving is to no be redundant about the source.  If you're showing the user ID / handle in the video with the comment, avoid saying, "so and so says..." unless there is something really funny about the name itself or in context with the video.  I generally can't stand news program or anything else when they use social media, show you the comment and the user id and then tell you that again...  wasted airtime.

Still pointless to display the text and read a voice-over at the same time.  That's a major no-no from PowerPoint 101.  Get the Carmine Gallo book about Steve Jobs that I recommended in the last thread.

Addendum:  if you're going to use video, take advantage of it.  For example from this one, if you're going to tell us how comments arrived in thread form, taking the note from above, why not use the video to wipe-in the comments in a fashion that visually lets us know they were related, rather than again saying, "so and so said this in response to that last comment".  It slows everything down and makes the funny more like a shopping list.

The original fark way back when was simpler, so you got more people in the fewer threads. Thats why I stay a liter, the few times I've been sponsored it was all just so overwhelming. I understand you need to make beer money and all, and I've no problem with all that, its just not for me. So, adding a whole video channel or whatever this is is just more complexity.

I also miss the absurdity - haxxored by pigz, april fools filters, pickle incidents, slatted chairs, shiat that makes no goddamn sense. I love that. Those threads where people are just jamming the weirdest shiat for no reason. Love it. Its like this joint is taking itself so so deadly seriously, and yet still trying to keep the mantle of "wacky"... that never ever works. "Real News, Real Funny" Uh... Gotta go all in one way or the other.

I mean look what happened to caturday. Used to be funny as hell, now its people talking in third person for the pictures of their cats and well... *oogy woogy waves to thread*... whatever, thats their scene. But its more like a church group with paws.

This is what I was going to say,  fark was much more interesting when it was "NSFW"

Going to a safe for work format really ripped a lot of the personality out of fark IMO.

Amen. How hard could it be to just filter all the NSFW stuff out of one login, and leave the whole site as is. Im not a developer, so I don't really know the right terms. Hell sensible erection does that, and I dont think they even have an administrator anymore. What Im trying and failing to explain is giving the option for one user id to log into either the full fark, with titties and gorgor included, or log in through the "Work" button or whatever, which presents the same stuff but with the dodgy stuff filtered out. So people can choose their own experience. I'd read one at work and one at home and be happy.

Mandatory nudity in profile pictures would help too.

I've heard that some websites that show pictures of boobies are very successful. Maybe they could mix in some boobies with the regular links.

Oh wait...

What's interesting is, they nuked the Boobies tag because advertisers might be offended (despite the tag being massively popular with Fark's READERS) but having a headline about getting a little pussy is totally okay.
