The kid will get a new one. That's what sympathy and/or insurance is for.

I bought my girlfriend the iPad mini for Christmas and she insists on taking it on our Europe trip in a couple of months. While she doesn't need it to communicate I'm not sure she should take it.

she shouldn't.  I would also look up scams and safety precautions while travelling in Europe. Different countries/cities in Europe have different scams and safety issues.

Crime is mostly about opportunity. Someone weak with something valuable is a target. Thieves rarely make moral judgements about who they steal from, hence why there are car jackings with children still locked in car seats.

"My iPad is my voice, so it is very important to me," he said through the device.
He can use audio through the iPad or just type his message with a $249 app.

sounds like this isn't the first time he's been robbed.

Why didn't he have location reporting enabled on his iPad? It's now impossible to disable while running the latest version of iOS.

Eh, use common sense: Know where you're going, and if you're in an area that's maybe not that great or is really crowded, don't take it out. If she just wants it wor entertainment while in the hotel, what's the problem?

I've been to Paris twice, and Barcelona and thankfully I've never been pickpocketed or had anything stolen. The secret is to always, always be aware of what is going on around you, watch everyone around you, suspect everyone and you'll be fine. Don't bring anything of great value and certainly don't carry it around with you if you do. Even leaving valuables in hotel rooms isn't safe, hotel employees can steal from you too.

My wife and I took my laptop and iPad with us to our honeymoon in Jamaica. The iPad was perfect for music and reading on the plane and beach and wasn't burdensome to pack. The laptop didn't get much use, just enough to check in on my work e-mail.

I don't see the problem here. Handicapable people just want to be treated like everyone else. Right?

Ooooh sorry!  you come back as a 3-legged guinea pig.  NTTAWWT.

What kind of barbarian are you? No one from California calls it Cali. Only certain rappers.
