A lot of the liberal people I know were watching it on FoxNews if nothing else than for the derp.

I tuned into PBS.

Time to look away...

2014-01-29 06:21:09 PM
I guess if you ignore NBC, CBS and ABC, then yes, Fox was the most watched network.

2014-01-29 06:21:56 PM
I watched it on whitehouse.gov/live, but then I don't have cable.  It's been interesting watching the right-wing folks I know trying to come up with things to dislike in his speech.

2014-01-29 06:29:47 PM
"And to make matters worse, the most-watched network for the speech was Fox News "

Worse?  How so?  Because they stayed around after it to listen to fox?  I'd rather that at least listen to the president on any network than not watch it at all

2014-01-29 06:38:55 PM
I only ever watch it on Cspan. I can't stand listening to the talking heads.

2014-01-29 06:39:28 PM
the number of telegraphed messages discussing the state of the union is also at an all-time low since the invention of the telegraph

2014-01-29 06:40:57 PM
I caught it on whitehouse.gov

sprawl15: the number of telegraphed messages discussing the state of the union is also at an all-time low since the invention of the telegraph

Hey, at least they get to decipher it.  I only read papers that are sold by newsboys in front of old-timey newsstands.  I'm still waiting for the SotU to come spinning out of the clouds in thirty-point font.

/Voting Republican because I never did trust that Roosevelt fella.

2014-01-29 07:43:27 PM
So then it's not going to get picked up for next season?

2014-01-29 08:01:58 PM
Uh oh. If the viewership drops below 30 million, Sarah PalinCathy McMorris Rodgers is automatically president, and Obama has to have Joe Wilson and Samuel Alito follow him around and yell at him as he performs mundane tasks.

This is bad news...for Obama.

2014-01-29 08:02:15 PM
I recorded it on msnbc and watched after the UK-LSU game was over. And turned that shiat off before the talking heads chimed in. I'm liberal as can be, but I didn't feel they were going to add anything of value. I know what I heard (and didn't hear) and how I feel about it.

FNC led in cable news.

Though I have to really wonder how good these numbers are, given that I suspect both the Neilsen traditional numbers and the household surveys skew heavily towards older, more traditional viewers.

Which is, of course, also why FNC always has such high viewership numbers on cable.

2014-01-29 08:06:47 PM
If ratings keep dropping like this, I figure Obama won't be renewed for 2017.

2014-01-29 08:09:23 PM
So does this mean sponsors will be spending less on politicians?

2014-01-29 08:13:29 PM
This means something.

right?

Neilsen take a broad sample that includes all demographics, if they skewed heavily towards older viewers, then why does Pro Wrestling and Spongebob generally top the ratings charts? Reruns of Big Bang Theory do real well too for some reason.

Where does this fall on the "Sarah Palin is automatically President" continuum?

2014-01-29 08:37:34 PM
It's because Fox News digitally added flames PLUS had a picture-in-picture of slow-motion Megyn Kelly leg-crossing action.

Dementia?

2014-01-29 09:14:23 PM
How many watched it online?

2014-01-29 09:15:24 PM
hard to believe that there were that many viewers.    More likely that half those people just left the TV on while they walked the dog.

2014-01-29 09:17:34 PM
I was playing Counterstrike, drinking Boddingtons Pub Ale, and listening to 80's new wave cd's and then some Warren Zevon.

Me too

does anybody actually watch that anyway? I would rather have a conversation with my dog. It's one sided... just like that speech img.fark.net

2014-01-29 09:22:52 PM
So you're saying conservatives get all their news from one source and that tends to drive up ratings for national events disproportionately?

Not quite. You get the response of clapping or standing by members of the audience, and judge participants accordingly. Plus, Boehner seemed to be on the verge of passing out after a 3 day bender.

Quite simply, it was a stellar day in U.S. politics.

You should have checked out the Republican response

/a genuine work o fart

2014-01-29 09:30:09 PM
The viewership probably dropped because we know what will happen, the President will ask for things, the Republican controlled Congress will roll their eyes and scream class warfare, and nothing will be done by congress to promote the Presidents plan. Instead we'll get another 40 attempts to get rid of the Affordable Care Act, because the black guy made it happen, even though it's mostly what the white guys wanted in the 90s when the Republicans used to offer alternatives (even bad ones) instead of simply obstruction.

Same here. I wouldn't be surprised if the viewership was at least the same or up, if they counted online viewers.

Also Obama got Boehner to give him a thumbs up.

Still waiting for the Tea Baggers to use this as evidence that Boehner's a RINO.

I completely understand how the rating could (un)skew that way. Someone had to whitesplain that speech to conservatives.

2014-01-29 09:40:57 PM
If the numbers fall any lower, the SOTU will just be a ten minute segment on "Kickin' It With Byron Allen" from now on.

Biden looks like he either got botoxed or his handlers slopped a huge blob of foundation on him for the cameras.  Too smooth.

Boehner looks tanned, rested, and ready.

I came to ask whether they took online viewing into account, but I see it's been taken care of.  If they didn't, that would also explain why Fox had the highest ratings, since I'd expect the web viewers to skew younger, traditionally a less conservative demographic.  There's also the punditry angle, as people who are more interested in what Obama had to say on his own would tune in to C-SPAN or whitehouse.gov's streams, while Republicans might be more interested in the conservative pundits' refutation of the speech than in the speech itself, therefore favoring the networks.

2014-01-29 09:46:01 PM
A large portion of the South was busy with a snowy/icy Hell of driving for 8 hours just to get nowhere while exits off of all major roadways were littered with jacknifed tractor trailers, terrified children in school buses as well as stuck and/or straight up abandoned vehicles, requiring them to hunt on their phone for an ever dwindling supply of vacant hotel rooms while moving 3 feet a minute on increasingly icy and treacherous roads.

It kind of took precedent over the SOTU regardless of political leanings.

/it was not fun...

As per Mr. Conservative:   http://www.mrconservative.com/2014/01/31183-rino-john-boehner-blames- g op-for-govt-shutdown-video/

He has been RINO'ed since he blamed the shutdown on the GOP, not Obama.
