king_nacho: LeroyBourne: We just got a 5 guys in my area.  I tried it, and thanks to Fark I was told to order my fries extra crispy, thank you.  But, I wish we had an In n Out burger, anyone who has had both care to say which they think is better?

I've found that all of the burger chains are pretty good, but usually there is some local place that is better than all of them. We have 5 guys and Smashburger here, but this is a college campus, and there are three different local non-chain places that are far better.

It isn't that I dislike chains, they are consistent and pretty good, but if you are going to be some place for a while, ask a local where to get a good burger, if they tell you a chain, you should probably ask a fat guy.

Oh, I'm no stranger to the 'hole in the wall joint is better.'  The best burger in the Twin Cities award went to this place called Blue Door Pub.  We stood around drinking for a good 2 hours before a table opened up, and that was a Thur night iirc.  But yeah, worth the wait.

I'd say 5 Guys has more variations available.Lots of different toppings.
They're both damn good, but In-N-Out is cheaper.

king_nacho: Burger King has the fancy Coke machines with 120 flavors, they are fairly common in fast food restaurants around here, but we are a test market, so we get things early.

Huh.  in phoenix, the only places i've seen them are Five Guys and Pei Wei.  those machines could very well be in, you know, jack in the box, pizza hut, toxic hell, wendys, you name it, i just rarely eat those places.  like i had jack in the box recently, but that was drive thru because the kids were hungry.  the only time i eat fast food is traveling.

because ntohing beats paying airport prices, like, $9 for a freaking quarter pounder with cheese combo.  no names mentioned, shiatty farkign Dirty Mac's in LAX domestic terminal.

LeroyBourne: Madduck:

In-and-Out hands down. Double double animal style, fries animal style.

buckeyebrain:

I'd take In-N-Out's burger, but 5 Guys' fries

Right on, what about the price?  I went all out and got the x2 bacon burger, large fry and small drink and the price was like $14.  I'll eat at a 5 guy's but it's not gonna be super often.
/also don't dig this new 'high end fast food' trend, too spendy

I'll concur. 5 guys has better fries, but In-N-Out has way better burgers.

A double-double combo meal at In-N-Out is like $7 with tax I think.

That was a really favorable profile of Lyndsi Snyder as she's relatively well known for being a kook-bag. Also, she is not really involved in the day to day operations of In 'n Out, at least she is involved only nominally - but they made it out to appear she's more involved by leaving out a few key details of what her actual duties are.

All in all it's fine, but really, she's just an American (and far more hit-able) version of Betty Saunders:

a local took me to Chicago's "Kuma Burger" (??) last year.  we went around 3 or so, when there was no wait.  Locals later asked me what i'd done in town, and when I mentioned Kuma burger, some were like, "dammit, i've lived my entire life in chicago and never been there because of the 2 hour wait, you've been here one freaking day and been there!"

It was really good, too. i had some kind of bacon / blue cheese that was about as much bacon as it was beef.  it was goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood-uuuuuuuuu uuuuuuuhhhh.

In-N-Out is better.  I sooooooo wish I could get a Double-Double with curly fries and a strawberry shake right now.

See, now that's a helluva lot more reasonable than a $14 combo meal.  I hope we get one soon, or if I end up traveling out west I'll make it a point to visit an In n Out.

I've seen them here in Burger King, Fazoli's, Moe's, and Firehouse Subs and several others. They've been here for 2-3 years now. They are starting to show up in sit-down restaurants too.

Dr Jack Badofsky: In-N-Out is better.

in n out has a better vibe and a cooler marketing scheme (the cool t-shirts, the endearingly kitschy outfits) but I think Five Guys is head and shoulders better.  but again, i don't go to either terribly often.

there's another thing called "Smash Burger" that is said to be the same business model, but i've never had it.  i see signs for it in the papers but never had that.  if i'm going to pay for a burger, i generally prefer a more upscale one.  there are some local chains or just local 'straunts that i'll go to when i have that itch.  like one has a wagyu beef burger, and another uses exclusively grass fed beef.

ehhh.

oh man.....they franchised to Arizona about a decade ago, and i LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVED Fazoli's!!!!  they all pulled about in short order.  when i was a poor college kid one of my lame guilty pleasures was fazoli's.

one of them by me was vacant and then rebranded as a drive-thru bank.  another became a starbuck's.  the one in flagstaff, last i saw, was just left to rot.  the paint was all faded, the landscaping overrun with weeds and shiat.  i'd be like, "oh my dear fazoli's, how many bowls of free breadsticks did i consume inside that now-vacant building...."

5 Guys was a grease bomb of nastiness.  I had to go to Walgreens  to get some prescription strenght toilet paper after eating a double cheeseburger there.
Which reminds me, I learned that everything is basically doubled automatically.

Umm, it 100% absolutely is because of religion. The company founder is a Southern Baptist. And I quote him: "Our decision to close on Sunday was our way of honoring God and of directing our attention to things that mattered more than our business."

Hobby Lobby is closed Sunday for the same reason.

Hobby Lobby may be shutting down completely very soon.

She got married the first time at 18, shortly after her dad died and she was somewhat floating around, that could be considered doomed to fail.

Her soon to be third ex is a pretty big general contractor (well, actually his dad owns the company, but he's still in a high level position).  They met through drag racing, as he races pretty heavily too.  I'm sure there was a two-way pre-nup involved in that marriage.

Don't know about hubby #2 other than what the article says....

Someone with some sense needs to seduce and marry her in order to get control of the company out of her hands. I don't care what she does in her personal life, but when it starts affecting my ability to eat a Double Double we have a problem.

Never heard of SmashBurger (does the Incredible Hulk own it?), but I did have 5 Guys. Few times, and it was ok, but I can make burgers myself that taste just like theirs.  In-N-Out to me tastes better with the onions they put in the meat.  Not sure if 5 Guys freezes their meat, but INO doesn't.  I've heard about that Island Burger a few times and am curious.  Anybody know of a good burger joint in Port Charlotte, FL area!  I'm heading there in  2 weeks to see the parents.

Meh, In-N-Out is one of the fast food chains that actually pays their employees a decent wage and has for a few decades now.  The worst they got as far as preachy is when their drink cups used to have Biblical quotes on them in tiny print.  To my knowledge they're not in the same category of asshattery that Chick-Fil-A is.

Really? Must have a different place called Red Robin where you live than the ones I am familiar with.

Haven't had In-N-Out, but have been to 5 Guys once. The burgers were good, but greasy, and I will definitely need to remember the extra crispy fries next time, maybe that will help them be edible. Floppy fries are almost as bad as floppy bacon.

rickythepenguin: in and out is good, but, Five Guys is just better.  they both make the fries on site.  Five Guys seasons them way better.  In and out's fries are just bland.  the burgers are more or less equal, but Five Guys has another ace in the deck:  every one (o fthe sum total of three i've been to) has that really cool soda machine with like, 30 soda combinations or whatever.  sprite, cherry sprite, lime sprite, chery coke, diet coke, vanilla coke, dr. pepper, red fanta, orange fanta, etc.,  you get the idea.  you can create all kinds of crazy coke combianations with your soda, above and beyond the burger.  in and out, at least last i checked, didn't have that.

Five Guys french fries are limpy soggy shiat.  Its the sole reason I don't eat there even though I do like the burgers.

So let's be generous and assume that "multiple Gs" is 2G.  That's 0-60 in just under 1.5 seconds.  I wonder if her 1970 Plymouth can really do that....

2014-01-29 06:11:51 PM
Five Guys is just an IP holder. Everything about the whole chain has been leased, all processes and products outsource. It's a company with no tangible assets.

In-n-Out, in contrast, owns everything. I know they have their own meat processing facilities, but I wouldn't blame them on buying their buns. Being privately held, without prospect of sale, they have an obligation to run the company for decades to come. Owning things hurts your return on net assets if you have to report you earnings and assets quarterly, but means you aren't paying GE for the counters and real estate owners for decades past the purchase price.

McDonalds is a different beast altogether. They're actually a commercial real estate company.
