Her devotion to Christianity is reflected in a small tattoo on her arm, an Aramaic phrase she scoured the Web to find. "It's Jesus' language," she explains. "It's part of a Bible verse. Matthew 6:10. It says, 'Your kingdom come, your will be done.'" She sports a companion tattoo in Hebrew. "It says, 'Hated.' It references John 15:18, where Jesus says-this is paraphrased-'Do not be surprised when the world hates you, for it hated me.' So yes, those are for me. Those are reminders."

I've found that all of the burger chains are pretty good, but usually there is some local place that is better than all of them. We have 5 guys and Smashburger here, but this is a college campus, and there are three different local non-chain places that are far better.

It isn't that I dislike chains, they are consistent and pretty good, but if you are going to be some place for a while, ask a local where to get a good burger, if they tell you a chain, you should probably ask a fat guy.

disclaimer:  i've only had 5 Guys 2-3 times, and not in perhaps a year.  I don't eat fast food very often.  I've had In and Out maybe 5 times in, ohhhh, a decade.

Five Guys, no question.

in and out is good, but, Five Guys is just better.  they both make the fries on site.  Five Guys seasons them way better.  In and out's fries are just bland.  the burgers are more or less equal, but Five Guys has another ace in the deck:  every one (o fthe sum total of three i've been to) has that really cool soda machine with like, 30 soda combinations or whatever.  sprite, cherry sprite, lime sprite, chery coke, diet coke, vanilla coke, dr. pepper, red fanta, orange fanta, etc.,  you get the idea.  you can create all kinds of crazy coke combianations with your soda, above and beyond the burger.  in and out, at least last i checked, didn't have that.

Five Guys is  a biiiiiiiiiiit mroe expensive but nothing that will break the bank.

You're cool In and Out, you're just not as good as Five Guys.

Umm, it 100% absolutely is because of religion. The company founder is a Southern Baptist. And I quote him: "Our decision to close on Sunday was our way of honoring God and of directing our attention to things that mattered more than our business."

Having grown up in the same area as the original In-N-Out I was excited to hear that a 5 Guys was opening up so I could see what all the people back East were raving about.
Let's just say that while I will most likely never go back to a 5 Guys I continue to patronize In-N-Out once in awhile.

Oh, I'm no stranger to the 'hole in the wall joint is better.'  The best burger in the Twin Cities award went to this place called Blue Door Pub.  We stood around drinking for a good 2 hours before a table opened up, and that was a Thur night iirc.  But yeah, worth the wait.

Huh.  in phoenix, the only places i've seen them are Five Guys and Pei Wei.  those machines could very well be in, you know, jack in the box, pizza hut, toxic hell, wendys, you name it, i just rarely eat those places.  like i had jack in the box recently, but that was drive thru because the kids were hungry.  the only time i eat fast food is traveling.

because ntohing beats paying airport prices, like, $9 for a freaking quarter pounder with cheese combo.  no names mentioned, shiatty farkign Dirty Mac's in LAX domestic terminal.

That was a really favorable profile of Lyndsi Snyder as she's relatively well known for being a kook-bag. Also, she is not really involved in the day to day operations of In 'n Out, at least she is involved only nominally - but they made it out to appear she's more involved by leaving out a few key details of what her actual duties are.

All in all it's fine, but really, she's just an American (and far more hit-able) version of Betty Saunders:

a local took me to Chicago's "Kuma Burger" (??) last year.  we went around 3 or so, when there was no wait.  Locals later asked me what i'd done in town, and when I mentioned Kuma burger, some were like, "dammit, i've lived my entire life in chicago and never been there because of the 2 hour wait, you've been here one freaking day and been there!"

It was really good, too. i had some kind of bacon / blue cheese that was about as much bacon as it was beef.  it was goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood-uuuuuuuuu uuuuuuuhhhh.

Dr Jack Badofsky: In-N-Out is better.

in n out has a better vibe and a cooler marketing scheme (the cool t-shirts, the endearingly kitschy outfits) but I think Five Guys is head and shoulders better.  but again, i don't go to either terribly often.

there's another thing called "Smash Burger" that is said to be the same business model, but i've never had it.  i see signs for it in the papers but never had that.  if i'm going to pay for a burger, i generally prefer a more upscale one.  there are some local chains or just local 'straunts that i'll go to when i have that itch.  like one has a wagyu beef burger, and another uses exclusively grass fed beef.

ehhh.

oh man.....they franchised to Arizona about a decade ago, and i LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVED Fazoli's!!!!  they all pulled about in short order.  when i was a poor college kid one of my lame guilty pleasures was fazoli's.

one of them by me was vacant and then rebranded as a drive-thru bank.  another became a starbuck's.  the one in flagstaff, last i saw, was just left to rot.  the paint was all faded, the landscaping overrun with weeds and shiat.  i'd be like, "oh my dear fazoli's, how many bowls of free breadsticks did i consume inside that now-vacant building...."

FYI, that's not because of religion (Chick-Fil-A closed on Sundays).

Study it out

Umm, it 100% absolutely is because of religion. The company founder is a Southern Baptist. And I quote him: "Our decision to close on Sunday was our way of honoring God and of directing our attention to things that mattered more than our business."

Hobby Lobby is closed Sunday for the same reason.

Hobby Lobby may be shutting down completely very soon.

rickythepenguin: Dr Jack Badofsky: In-N-Out is better.

in n out has a better vibe and a cooler marketing scheme (the cool t-shirts, the endearingly kitschy outfits) but I think Five Guys is head and shoulders better.  but again, i don't go to either terribly often.

there's another thing called "Smash Burger" that is said to be the same business model, but i've never had it.  i see signs for it in the papers but never had that.  if i'm going to pay for a burger, i generally prefer a more upscale one.  there are some local chains or just local 'straunts that i'll go to when i have that itch.  like one has a wagyu beef burger, and another uses exclusively grass fed beef.

ehhh.

I like SB more than 5G but mostly because their chicken burger is awesome.

She got married the first time at 18, shortly after her dad died and she was somewhat floating around, that could be considered doomed to fail.

Her soon to be third ex is a pretty big general contractor (well, actually his dad owns the company, but he's still in a high level position).  They met through drag racing, as he races pretty heavily too.  I'm sure there was a two-way pre-nup involved in that marriage.

Don't know about hubby #2 other than what the article says....

Someone with some sense needs to seduce and marry her in order to get control of the company out of her hands. I don't care what she does in her personal life, but when it starts affecting my ability to eat a Double Double we have a problem.

rickythepenguin: LeroyBourne: The best burger in the Twin Cities award went to this place called Blue Door Pub. We stood around drinking for a good 2 hours before a table opened up, and that was a Thur night iirc. But yeah, worth the wait.

a local took me to Chicago's "Kuma Burger" (??) last year.  we went around 3 or so, when there was no wait.

I'll have to keep this place in the back of my mind next time I find myself in Chicago.  They sound similar, Blue Door uses high end blue cheeses, hence the name.

Never heard of SmashBurger (does the Incredible Hulk own it?), but I did have 5 Guys. Few times, and it was ok, but I can make burgers myself that taste just like theirs.  In-N-Out to me tastes better with the onions they put in the meat.  Not sure if 5 Guys freezes their meat, but INO doesn't.  I've heard about that Island Burger a few times and am curious.  Anybody know of a good burger joint in Port Charlotte, FL area!  I'm heading there in  2 weeks to see the parents.

Meh, In-N-Out is one of the fast food chains that actually pays their employees a decent wage and has for a few decades now.  The worst they got as far as preachy is when their drink cups used to have Biblical quotes on them in tiny print.  To my knowledge they're not in the same category of asshattery that Chick-Fil-A is.

LeroyBourne: We just got a 5 guys in my area.  I tried it, and thanks to Fark I was told to order my fries extra crispy, thank you.  But, I wish we had an In n Out burger, anyone who has had both care to say which they think is better?

Really? Must have a different place called Red Robin where you live than the ones I am familiar with.

Haven't had In-N-Out, but have been to 5 Guys once. The burgers were good, but greasy, and I will definitely need to remember the extra crispy fries next time, maybe that will help them be edible. Floppy fries are almost as bad as floppy bacon.

2014-01-29 06:01:53 PM

rickythepenguin: in and out is good, but, Five Guys is just better.  they both make the fries on site.

Five Guys french fries are limpy soggy shiat.  Its the sole reason I don't eat there even though I do like the burgers.

2014-01-29 06:11:51 PM
Five Guys is just an IP holder. Everything about the whole chain has been leased, all processes and products outsource. It's a company with no tangible assets.

In-n-Out, in contrast, owns everything. I know they have their own meat processing facilities, but I wouldn't blame them on buying their buns. Being privately held, without prospect of sale, they have an obligation to run the company for decades to come. Owning things hurts your return on net assets if you have to report you earnings and assets quarterly, but means you aren't paying GE for the counters and real estate owners for decades past the purchase price.

McDonalds is a different beast altogether. They're actually a commercial real estate company.

Naw man. Look at the "crew chief" thing. She takes some classes and changes her own oil as a hobby, and thinks she's more qualified than men/women who've been doing this stuff their whole lives? We have Five Guys locally, but I've only had In-n-Out on two trips to the west coast, in 2010 and 2012.  It's as much a destination as Disneyland is, so I look at it through rose-colored glasses.  Animal Style is the way to go, and the meal is half the price of Five Guys.

Knowing that a cheeseburger isn't exactly a health food, I don't get them all that often, but when I do, it's Five Guys.  If I'm going to eat it, I'm going to eat the best.  Their fries are better than In-n-Out, but I prefer In-n-Out overall.

I have not yet tried ordering extra crispy, but it is a damned good idea. Until now, my trick was to immediately dump the fries out of the cup and into the bag so they don't get steamed and even more soggy in the wax-coated cup. But next time I'm ordering them crispy, I think that would make them perfect.

It references John 15:18, where Jesus says-this is paraphrased-'Do not be surprised when the world hates you, for it hated me.' So yes, those are for me. Those are reminders."

In-N-Out beats Five Guys in my opinion.  It's just a much more distinctive tasting burger.  In a blind taste test there's no mistaking In-N-Out, but Five Guys' burger could be anything from a chain burger to a local mom and pop burger.  In-N-Out also has outstanding shakes.

That said, Five Guys wins on fries.  In-N-Out fries are pretty lame.  They are not bad, just so mediocre and unmemorable.

Madduck: LeroyBourne: We just got a 5 guys in my area.  I tried it, and thanks to Fark I was told to order my fries extra crispy, thank you.  But, I wish we had an In n Out burger, anyone who has had both care to say which they think is better?

In-and-Out hands down. Double double animal style, fries animal style.

I go double animal animal double style, but instead of using my mouth, I stuff it straight up my ass.  Sometimes my friend helps me.

\And it's always, always, always, bare back, if you know what I'm sayin', and I think you do.

I never order my Five Guys fries extra crispy and they're so good I keep stuffing them into my face after it hurts. I'll go straight up vomitorium on a bag of Five Guys fries.

Oh fine. Well, as chains go, In n Out is really good.  And I do like the fries at both In n Out and 5 guys.

I also really like Jack in the Box's sourdough jack (with bacon).

Recently, I had a Wendy's burger and I got to say that is a really good chain burger.  And I'm surprised there is no love for Wendys.

Aside from the fact that they are both fast food restaurants that serve burgers and fries, In-N-Out and 5 Guys are totally different. Different style burgers, different style fries. There's a place for both in my life.

Why the hell would you ruin your burger and fries by covering them in Thousand Island dressing?

Because with the processed cheese and over fried onions it is a tasty tasty treat. We are talking fast food, not huate cuisine.

zixr: I don't get all the love for 5 Guys. I went there once and the burgers were super greasy and super expensive.

I rarely see Island Burgers get mentioned in these comparisons. They're excellent.

The best burgers here -- as I suspect most places -- are from a local mom & pop joint. Or our backyard.

oh man.....they franchised to Arizona about a decade ago, and i LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVED Fazoli's!!!!  they all pulled about in short order.  when i was a poor college kid one of my lame guilty pleasures was fazoli's.

one of them by me was vacant and then rebranded as a drive-thru bank.  another became a starbuck's.  the one in flagstaff, last i saw, was just left to rot.  the paint was all faded, the landscaping overrun with weeds and shiat.  i'd be like, "oh my dear fazoli's, how many bowls of free breadsticks did i consume inside that now-vacant building...."

they started in Lexington KY, and we still have plenty of them. The grew too fast and couldn't keep up, so they cut back. They are starting to get thing settled back out so hopefully they'll start expanding again.

For me the problem with 5 Guys is not the taste. It's the fact that 2 burgers, fries and a drink for two people is $20+. In and out is way cheaper and tastes just as good.
In and out is not the best burger, it is the best fast food burger.

2014-01-30 12:27:51 PM
Man, where's the Steak'n'Shake love? Five Guys has nasty fries and is super expensive, the nearest In'n'Out is about four states away, but for a premium burger and decent fries, Steak'n'Shake is my favorite. It's easily as good of a burger as Five Guys and isn't nearly as overpriced. Plus, the milkshakes are awesome, especially if you get a vanilla and spike it with a shot of bourbon (after you're safely home, of course).

2014-01-30 12:40:42 PM
If cost is not option, the choice is obvious. 5 guys, by a landslide.

In and Out is better in terms of variety; they have tons of customization options available including animal style (onions, thousand island dressing etc) cut into the burger or fries, but that ish isn't for me, as I don't like onions.

The meat is amazing on a 5 guys burger...you can tell it is fresh. In and out is good, but you can tell it was frozen, or at least older. It is clearly inferior. The other toppings on a 5 guys burger is better.

As for fries, there is absolutely no contest. Even the biggest In and Out fanboy has got to admit that if properly cooked, the fresh potatoes, cooked in peanut oil at 5 guys smokes the little shoestrong crap In and Out tries to pass off as a fried potato. Get them extra crispy, with lots of that awesome Cajun seasoning.

There is one disadvantage, however...and that is that is costs WAY too much to eat at 5 guys. It WILL run you 20+ dollars for any real meal for two people. It's an embarrassment.

At my local Five Guys, the single patty burger is $5.29 and the regular fries is $3.19.  Anyone who has been to Five Guys knows that even a regular fries is enough to feed two people with some left over, so only one is necessary.  Dinner for two, burger and fries, roughly $14.

Compare this to my local McDonalds where a Big Mac is about $5 and large fries are 3 and change.  However, you would need two orders of fries for two people. Dinner for two, burger and fries, roughly $17.

When you look at it this way, FG is not really that expensive for the quality and quantity.

Been to  In‑N‑Out Burger twice.  We went the second time because I didn't believe that many Farkers could be wrong.  They were!  Both times the food was terrible.  Like the holocaust, Never Again!
Five Guys is much better but very noisy.
Culvers is also better, just tell them HOLD THE BUTTER!  Sweet potato fries are also nice when they have them.
