'Our job is to help Americans build a future of hope and opportunity, a future of hope and opportunity begins with a growing economy, a future of hope and opportunity requires that all citizens have affordable and available healthcare, extending opportunity and hope depends on a stable supply of energy,'

 - George W. Bush Rand Paul

Did he say "torture is good"? That's the only way he'd really be plagiarizing from Marc Thiessen.

wow... a SOTU address with the word "opportunity" in it? yeah, that's definitely an original idea that could have only come from a bush speechwriter.

2014-01-29 02:47:58 PM
No no no, he said "Opportunity... if he'd said "Oppurtunity than there'd be some credit owed to Bush...

"A quick text compare shows that no lines were directly lifted from Bush's 2007 speech in the one Obama gave on Tuesday."

That won't stop the derp machine.

You could tell from the official Responses last night that they were having a hard time coming up with something to criticize about the SOTU address, but this is just pathetic.

Give Rush and company a couple of days. I'm sure they'll find the Benghazi moment that was hidden in the speech.

"And for the southerners I have WhoopertunityTM for you, by 1 Whopper get the second half price. Have it your way, only at Burger King... this address brought to you by Burger King"

Okay, so I just picked two random SOTU addresses (Clinton's 1999 speech, Eisenhower's 1955 speech), Clinton used "opportunity" 11 times and "hope" 7, Eisenhower used "opportunity" 6 and "hope" 6.

It's almost as if these themes are generic, and not specific to one president.

In other news, conservatives have no idea what plagiarism actually is.

They've lost any hope of Christie 2016, which means they've effectively lost any hope of 2016.  This is their only shot.  So drink up, this shiat goes great with a twist of lime.

See Bush's speech goes Hope and Opportunity and a thousand points of lights but Obama's speech goes Hope and Oppurtinity and a thousand points of lights, tshhh.  See that little bit at the end.  Totally different.

nixon would never be caught saying the word hope

Guys, I don't care how often you try to rewrite history, Bush will never, ever, be known as a good, or even remotely competent, President. He failed utterly at the job. Utterly and completely.

I'm sure Republicans will latch onto this and come up with another "Absolutely Nothing Gate" outrage.

Just stick with the number of times Obama says "I" in a speech as evidence of narcissism if you are going to go this stupid route.

So I just checked. In total, he used the word less than 10 times in all his speeches combined in the positive sense, and used it in a negative way (dashed hope, our enemies hope) almost as often.

Wyalt Derp: So Obama agrees with Republican ideas and this is bad because?

Because there is an implicit admission that Bush was a bad president. But of course, they never supported Bush, and Bush isn't a real conservative anyway, and they don't even know how he got elected, because nobody they know even liked the guy. But really: LOOK OVER THERE, OBAMA BAD!

2014-01-29 03:52:35 PM
It's remarkable the lengths to which conservatives will go to find something to tell the rubes to be outraged about.

I bet someone at the RNC in 2012 used the word "opportunity".

W wouldn't know because he wasn't invited.

They just don't like the President getting people's hope up with a powerful word like opportunity.

Restrictions apply. The is a sh*t load of paperwork. You have to know the right people and go to the right schools. And then yet you might be mentally retarded and only worth $2.

They just want you guys to be aware of the real situation.

2014-01-29 03:56:34 PM
I thought the speech sounded way too conservative.  He legitimized the deficit as a problem, he mentioned that education was a way to stop inequality, all the same BS talking points.
The reality is that we are dividing the society into castes and you cannot have power or money without being in the top caste.  That is what is really going on.

2014-01-29 03:57:03 PM
So when he was talking about using executive orders he was a dictator, but when he was talking about opporunity he was back to being an empty suit?  I've never seen this much cognitive dissonance generated from one speech.

State of the Union speeches often follow similar themes. As our colleague Reid Epstein wrote ahead of Tuesday's speech, "[Obama's] State of the Union remarks, like those of his presidential predecessors over the past two decades or so, have all followed roughly the same template."

Seriously, fark this Marc Thiessen guy. Not only are these speeches always so much alike that I never listen. but even if this all mattered, OBAMA DIDN'T WRITE THE SPEECH ANYWAY.

For once I would like to hear a president say, "The state of the union is hopeless." For the lulz.
