New Jersey is to New York as Ireland was to Great Brittan c.1830 or so.

Who is calling it a New York Superbowl? I haven't heard that. It in New Jersey FFS.

2014-01-29 01:11:17 PM
The Jets and Giants are New York teams that play in New Jersey; playing somewhere else doesn't change that. If it did, it'd change every time they had an "away" game.

That said, the Super Bowl is being held in New Jersey; there is no connection to New York here (that I am aware of).

Both the Giants and Jets used to play in New York. Granted, a long time ago, but still...

And it's been a long time since the Cowboys have actually played in Dallas. Texas Stadium was in Irving, and AT&T Stadium is in Arlington. Of course, both of those are a matter of logistics. Both are/were in the middle between Dallas and Ft. Worth, so that makes sense.

A friend of mine, a season Giants ticket holder, had the New Jersey license plate "JRZGNTS".

Which, at least is the same State.  Now the "Washington" Redskins haven't been for over a decade,  but DC isn't actually a state so the fact that they play 10 min away in MD is less glaring

They were talking about this on NPR today, New Jersey does seem to have a reason to gripe they are on the hook for the extra police and snow removal but much of the economic benefit is staying in NYC.

let's go new york new jersey metrostars!

/a current NJ law states that any entity which starts using the meadowlands cannot have NY in the name without also including NJ
//so the soccer team eventually dropped both to become just "MetroStars"
///and then left the meadowlands so they could call themselves "New York" while playing in New Jersey

I honestly don't understand why this is an issue to some people. Unless as someone pointed out above, you're specifically dealing with tax revenue or something it really doesn't matter. The Meadowlands is closer to NYC than:

-the Cowboys are to Dallas
-the Redskins are to Washington
-the 49ers will be to San Fran

and probably other examples I'm forgetting

But at least those teams don't play in a completely different state. NYC is a big ass place but they couldn't build the stadium anywhere in the city? Somewhere in the Bronx or Long Island?

Midtown Manhattan is closer to the Meadowlands than it is to where I live in Queens, and that's including all the loops and turns to get out of the Lincoln Tunnel.

The Redskins do.

I honestly don't understand what the huge hangup about being in a different state is. Cincinnati's main airport is in Kentucky, but no one ever goes "I'm flying into Kentucky" when they go there.

Also the Jets DID try to get their own stadium in Manhattan, but several moneyed and political interests prevented it.

Wow old news is so exciting.

When I'm outside of the DFW metro area & people ask me where I'm from, I say Dallas because people immediately know where that is & it's a MUCH shorter way to say, "Denton, which is about 40 miles north of Dallas." It's TMI and people don't care & that's fine.

This is the same thing. Outside of the NYC metro area, nobody gives a shiat. It's all NYC to us until we're there & then we can get down to specifics.

It's ok, Jersey.

Usually it's idiots who don't understand when a metropolitan area spans two states.  For some reason it's okay for the Landover Redskins to be "Washington", the Orchard Park Bills to be "Buffalo" and the Arlington Cowboys to be "Dallas" but throw the Hudson River in the mix and people get all bent out of shape.

New York is the major city for which the football teams are named.  East Rutherford, NJ is part of the NYC metro area.  This isn't rocket science, yet here we are in this thread again.

There are a ton of Jets and Giants fans in NJ, and the majority of them are assholes. At least they don't have to pay as much to get home after the game.

They are no longer the Metrostars.  They are the Red Bulls and they play in Harrison, NJ

that would be confusing since there's already a West New York, NJ.. which is east of East Rutherford.. so you'd end up with New York, NJ being West of West New York, NJ

There is a Westerville just outside of the metro hub where I live.  It is on the NorthEast side of town.

It's not that we don't know the game or the teams are actually in NJ. It's that we just don't care. They're interchangeable to the rest of the country. Sorry, NJ, you're not noteworthy enough to get recognition as your own state, you're basically NY's scrotum.

2014-01-29 04:17:46 PM
And none of the Tampa Bay teams play on a barge in the bay.

What's the deal with that?

2014-01-29 04:17:52 PM
Considering the stink that permeates the state, i'd say NJ is more like NY's asshole than its scrotum.

2014-01-29 04:19:42 PM
Jersey is a shathole...I'd keep saying the SB was in NY too. It's not like I'm going to make a side-trip to NJ--I'm gonna spend all my time in NYC.

I agree. The only way that NJ would have a reasonable gripe is if the teams were in NJ due to its own merit, not because of the state's proximity to NY. But if NYC and all of it's inhabitants never existed, Jersey sure as hell wouldn't have two NFL teams. The teams are there because of NYC.

/that's regarding the actual team names; Jersey is right in pushing people to recognize where they are now, given their cost for security and infrastructure
/from far south suburbs and now live in Indiana, but still tell people Chicago

I agree on all counts. The teams exist because their proximity to that majorest of all US media markets. But if I were the mayor of east rutherford I would certainly appreciate a little call out now and again and I'd damn sure expect a little help from big brother and the league on the infrastructure budget.

I live in a suburb of Dallas and I've called the Irving cowboys and now Arlington cowboys most of my life. I also call Jets/Giants New Jersey.

The tax payers in the cities that paid for the stadium and deal with the traffic/trash deserve to be named.

Plus is irritates cowboy fans which is pretty fun.

They should make the "Welcome to NJ" sign on the Turnpike ENORMOUS, just so everyone clutches their pearls about being in NEW JERSEY (home of guidos, sweat, mobsters, graft, and stench; as compared to NY which has none of those) on game day.

// and maybe put a double deuce on it
// "Yeah. You're in Jersey. Fark you, you're not special."

What would be in New Jersey if it weren't for NY? Nothing. What would be in NY if it weren't for New Jersey? A whole lot that would also spill over its own borders.
Really, that entire part of the coast is one huge city. It's funny that they distinguish between the different areas.
