It does make sense that he'd ask her to stay on as housekeeper, since he would never be able to get around the house to clean on his own--anchored as he would be by those enormous things.

He probably didn't want her hanging around, even if she did clean some stuff. But he offered her the job anyway, because he's a nice guy and he wanted no hard feelings. Doing favors for women is a real minefield. You never know exactly how they'll react.

That's some weapons-grade stupid on both sides of the equation.

JonPace: Article says they divorced 5 years ago and he's been letting her live in the house since then

They were married in the 70s.  Presumably, the house was theirs.  He would only be "letting her live in the house" if by "letting her live" you mean "not paying her for her half".

6 million pounds to get rid of old trash? Worth it.

2014-01-29 02:40:25 PM
What? I call B.S. on this. If they divorced 5 years ago, why was she still living in the marital home? Did he not want to pay her alimony? Were they still sharing the marital bed? Is this why the first wife got aggressive over the new model? And if the guy gave the first wife 6 million pounds, why doesn't she just take it, shut up and buy a new home and all the trappings to go with it and get a toy boy?

Unless the divorce was part of some scheme to avoid taxes and/or civil liability.

In Mughal India, a few men used to transfer all the wealth to their wives and divorce said wives just before taxes were due.  They then claimed poverty to get out of paying taxes (women weren't taxed, so they were ignored).  Two weeks later, they remarried the same wives.  Akbar had to decree that once you divorce a woman you could never remarry her to stop that.  Oh, did I mention the men were the rich religious leaders?

She just got the 6 million pounds.  That was what the case was about.  Grandpa Munster brought in Sasha Grey, and asked Cruella Deville to stay on as the hired help.  She then went to the lawyers and sicced them on her.  And then Lord Fauntleroy just gave her 6 million quid.  She didn't have the money until just now

It was way more than 5 years ago (TFA says the 90s), but otherwise, exactly.  That's the key here.  She let him (legally) get away already.  It's no the "marital" home anymore---she was essentially staying as a guest.

Even better:

FTA: They married in the late 1970s and divorced in the 1990s, but the judge said they treated the divorce as 'just a piece of paper' and carried on living together.

So, divorced for at least 15 years and she's still hanging around? Gee, I guess all that wealth was harder to let go than that guy's increasingly shriveled body, wasn't it? How DARE he decided to spread the wealth to a younger woman, right?

That said, if the divorce happened because he didn't want to end up forking over a huge payout should he find somebody else (hedging his bets, as it were) then he farked up royally.

Pre nups have no real legal force in the UK. Unlikely to have affected the judge's decision in this case if there had been one.

He didn't 'give' her 6mil. She sued him for it and won. Think about it. Millionaire and woman divorce but still choose to stay together. Some years later, he takes up with the younger model, installs her AND her kid in the mansion he shares with his ex-wife / partner. He tells his ex-wife / partner that he doesn't want her to leave, so can't she stay and be some kind of maid for them instead.

Back when I worked for the divorce court, I ran into a guy like this.  He was, let's call it the high end of  upper-middle class, but had a habit of marrying lower-middle class or foreign women, and whenever he got tired of his current wife, he'd start openly dating her replacement, and at some point have them move in with himself and the previous wife.  Sooner or later, the wife would get disgusted and move out.  Whereupon he would run to the court, claim she had abandoned him, and he cold not locate her anywhere.  He'd get to serve her by "publication" (a notice int he newspaper and on the courthouse door)  get his divorce by default and not have to pay her anything, and then marry the next one.

Unfortunately for him, wife no % ran to a lawyer immediately after moving out, and that lawyer was a sharp cookie who did her research and discovered wives 1-4.

Let's just say he could no longer be described a s "upper middle class" anymore whent he judge was through with him.

Sounds like a very civilized, British arrangement:  They don't hate each other,  but she's not interested in his shriveled carcass anymore, and he wants to be free to roam.  The wife keeps the trains running on time and the house and grounds in order, she knows how he likes things, and he's comfortable with her.  She stays in their house of 30 years, and doesn't have her life disrupted.  Everyone's happy.

Then along comes Tiffany or Mercedes or whatever, and he feels 40 again.  And she ain't no sister-wife -  probably insufferable, because she knows as long as the ex is kinda-still-not, the payday isn't even close.  So she rattles chains 'til the old guy throws a hammer into the well-oiled machine.  Bet my non-existent 15 mill he'll regret it.  He sounds like a naiive, get-along type of chap who's infatuated.

Even worse on these paid links is they seem to stay up for two weeks at a time

They stay longer than that - with no option to comment on them. Yay selectivism.
Couple that with the condescending attitude of the totalfarkers and this site has declined a lot in the last few years.

FitzShivering: Aggressive?  I'd say he got off lucky.  I'd get murdered if I suggested such a thing.

Hell, I'd get murdered just for suggesting some housekeeping.

They were already divorced, so why is she entitled to shiat? Does your roommate get to take half of your assets when they move out in the UK?

LeroyBourne: Oh, she'll 'divorce well', as they say.  Unless he was smart enough to have her sign a pre-nup, which I don't think he is.

She is already divorced.

Magorn: Back when I worked for the divorce court, I ran into a guy like this.

I can top that.

My dad was called by one of his clients who was worried about her daughter.  Her husband of twenty years  (let's call him Arsehole) was openly dating another woman, the husband had filed for divorce, the daughter (Susan) wasn't in the house and nobody seemed to know where she was, although her signature appeared regularly on the various divorce papers (waiving all rights to any of the marital assets or any support whatsoever), AND Susan had a history of mental problems.

Dad tracked her down.  Hubby was a builder and she was living in a half-finished house with no electricity, minimal furniture, and a leaky roof.  There was water and plumbing.  For food she had a pack of bologna and a loaf of bread.  She told dad her name was now "Usan."  The "S" had disappeared.   Soon the u would disappear and she'd be "San."  Eventually all of the letters would disappear and so would she.

Dad asked her why she was living that way and she said that Arsehole told her she needed to stay there for a while but she wasn't worried because "Arsehole promised that he'd always take care of me."

So Dad called her mom and the judge and they reamed Arsehole six ways from Sunday in the court.  I don't know if his new chickie left him but I hope to hell she did.

The End.

Because they were her assets too. Cohabitation is still cohabitation even if you got divorced beforehand - instead of the usual way of marrying afterwards. And you don't know what she brought to the relationship in the way of assets nor do you know what she has been doing since the divorce.

Luckily the case was decided by people who looked into the circumstances in detail - rather than taking the opinion of some random anonymous yahoo on the internet.

Why were the assets not split when they were initially divorced? Isn't that the entire point of getting one? I don't understand why any of this was even necessary.

Who reads articles?

What give him the right to decide if she lives there or not.   I would think that would be decsion decided between the two and not just his to make.

I was ready to lay on some pluto hate, but if the original pair have been divorced since the 90s, then I'm ready to call the older chick a ho who will do anything for the Bennies Darwins.  I'll call the younger one that too, just for good measure.

It does make sense that he'd ask her to stay on as housekeeper, since he would never be able to get around the house to clean on his own--anchored as he would be by those enormous things.
