I told that to Phil Collins one day and he took great exception to it.
I also told him he couldn't have been a rock star, because the was an old bald man in a suit, so he must only be the manager.
You should have seen him twitch.

I've been in a ton of bands over the year and the one thing I have learned is that pecking order often times has nothing to do with the instrument played.

Read that again.  Nothing.

I've been in different bands where everyone took the hit.  And I"ve been the person who was the resident chew-toy as well.

Instrument doesn't matter.  Ability, at times, doesn't matter.

Want to improve your standing in the pecking order?  Go book a gig.  A paying gig.  A GOOD paying gig that you get to go back to month after month.  Keep doing this and it will be a different story because unless you, yourself, can do exactly that then his or her use to the band is greater than what you bring to the table.  All they need to do to replace you is find someone that can play....but to replace the person who's able to network and book a paying gig.....that's a totally different story.

They can be quite entertaining though... Mick Fleetwood, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, etc...

I was a cello player in quartets for years, and we always followed the first violin. Always. Democracy in a quartet is an alien concept to me...I don't see how that would work.

~~Deep in the African jungle, a safari was camped for the night. In the darkness, distant drums began a relentless throbbing that continued until dawn. The safari members were disturbed, but the guide reassured them: "Drums good. When drums stop, very bad." Every night the drumming continued, and every night the guide reiterated, "Drums good. When drums stop, VERY bad." This continues for several days until one morning the drumming suddenly stops and all the natives panic and run screaming. The man asks the guide what's the matter? The guide looking very frightened says: "When drums stop, VERY, VERY bad," he said. "Why is it bad?" asked a member of the safari. "Because when drums stop, bass solo begin!"

Really? They had to do a study for that?

1st Violin. They're the prima donna. They're in charge. Nobody's willing to pick a fight with them. It's not worth it, so they're in charge.
Cello. Cello players will kick your ass. They don't like you, and they have no problem letting you know. The only reason they don't go after the 1st Violin is because the crying is too annoying, and if you've got a good 1st Violin, they're tough to replace.
2nd Violin. They're the 1st Violin's sidekick, and afraid of the Cellist. They know they're no 1st Violin, and don't want to rock the boat.
Viola. They're tolerated because the composer says they have to be. If they weren't in the score, they wouldn't be here. Nobody makes eye contact, unless the 2nd Violin is really, really desperate...

My first instrument: Bass

Which is usually the instrument I enter a new band as.

In both of the last two bands I've been in, I've started as the bass player and by the time it was all said and done, I was the lead singer of those two bands.

Do not deny the power of a good bass player.

*************

Drummers in the Tampa Bay music scene are a rare commodity so when you get one, they are not one you kick around. Usually that is reserved for the bass player. Which I'm usually able to defer to the 'dime a dozen' guitar player who is the most easily replaced member of any band.

Pecking order is based on formula that includes availability, punctuality, and finally ability.
