(Slate)   The comma is disappearing from English which is fine because it's pointless silly and dumb but while nobody really needs to use it anymore that doesn't mean grammar isn't like important   (slate.com) divider line 179

Why cant we write English like we say it?

Why must we be so fanciful with our writing style?

Why cant we update the spelling standards to have English spelled phonetically again? No one pronounces the "gh" anymore, why still have it?

You're saying that English is tough to spell? That's rough. Frankly, I've had enough of people who want to slough off difficulties. *cough*

I am saying that English has changed significantly since the spelling standards were put in stone.

When is it exactly that you imagine the spelling standards were "put in stone"? And where?

And when was English ever spelled phonetically? And whose pronunciation are you going to deem correct?

So you are gonna tell me that the King James bible didnt use standardized spelling? Because it did. That was back in the 1600s. The current spelling standards we have come from the Chancery standard at the end of the Middle English period. The GH was pronounced back then. The silent "e" on many words were pronounced back then. There was no such thing as a silent K. English standards were based upon phonetic spelling and it hasnt been updated for a few centuries.

Wrong GH. GH sounds like the "ch" in German "Ich". For example, light was pronounced close to "Lihcht"

I say kill the hell out of the apostrophe but the comma is a useful marker. And comma-splices should be legalized, they are perfect in most contexts.

So his basic argument is "We don't need commas because Twitter."

That's just stupid. It's like saying "it isn't raining today so I should throw out my umbrella." There's a time and place for everything, and twitter should not be driving basic language rules.

I like apostrophes quite a bit, but I could live with that compromise.  Comma splices are just fine in informal communication, they just don't belong in formal writing.

Getting rid of the comma would be as inane as getting rid of the double-space-after-periods.

A Plan for the Improvement of English Spelling
   by Mark Twain

For example, in Year 1 that useless letter "c" would be dropped to be replased either by "k" or "s", and likewise "x" would no longer be part of the alphabet. The only kase in which "c" would be retained would be the "ch" formation, which will be dealt with later. Year 2 might reform "w" spelling, so that "which" and "one" would take the same konsonant, wile Year 3 might well abolish "y" replasing it with "i" and Iear 4 might fiks the "g/j" anomali wonse and for all. Jenerally, then, the improvement would kontinue iear bai iear with Iear 5 doing awai with useless double konsonants, and Iears 6-12 or so modifaiing vowlz and the rimeining voist and unvoist konsonants. Bai Iear 15 or sou, it wud fainali bi posibl tu meik ius ov thi ridandant letez "c", "y" and "x" -- bai now jast a memori in the maindz ov ould doderez -- tu riplais "ch", "sh", and "th" rispektivli. Fainali, xen, aafte sam 20 iers ov orxogrefkl riform, wi wud hev a lojikl, kohirnt speling in ius xrewawt xe Ingliy-spiking werld.
