Somebody really doesn't want to be home or really likes killing babies.

I kid. I kid.

He's got bigger balls than most people.

And among the people who stood clapping were the very people who voted to take away his (and so many others') benefits.

That's just because of the swelling after the IED attack.

I think he meant "serve" as in handing food out the drive through of McDonald's.   Since that seems to be the only job anyone can get anymore.

Nobody wanted to be the first to stop clapping.

I don't really care much for the SOTU.  I know it's required - well, it's not required that they make a spectacle of it, but tone it down a bit.  You don't really learn anything new.  Obama said he was going to do a few vaguely designed executive orders and called for passing some legislation and gave a rousing speech as always but there's way too many standing ovations.

/I thanks Sgt. Remsburg for his service.

Yeah, I was thinking. Dang, if the President didn't interrupt, it could have gone on forever. That would have been awesome. I wonder what the world record for longest standing ovation. Sadly it was probably staged as opposed to real, that would be a crappy record to try to record, "Oh god, can I stop clapping now, we weren't even clapping for anything".

I feel for anyone who has to go through what this guy has.........however if you join any armed forces you may expect to be injured at some point, serving your country.
Does a farmer injured in a tractor roll over get any recognition while helping feed a country?
Firemen, police, soldiers should all know they are at risk when taking on the job and I'm sure they are. When the highly likely happens it's like it is unexpected and they are in for some hero worship.
I would never wish it on anyone but it goes with the territory.

No no, I completely agree with you that we have a weird hero worship of soldiers now, which seems like a complete 180 from the Vietnam years. The legacy of 9/11

/yes, how about opening your fat bloated wallets and giving the guy a house, or at least a nice bankroll to offset his bills and etc. Stop farking with benefits on our veterans, and making it hard for them to get treatment. If everyone there donated 1k to the guy, his life would be much easier. And if anyone deserves it, he does. Not that it would happen, just saying.

His character is inspiring.
The part you are talking about - do you by any chance remember who sent that lad to meet his doom?
It was you and me, brother - if we tried to stop it, we failed.
Every casket and broken man that comes home? That's us, cuz!
It was you and me that sent them there - their blood is on our hands.
So you might want to soft-peddle the snark.

Would you have even heard of the guy and what he sacrificed were it not for the SOTU address?  These foreign wars are too far removed from the average American and we've become to comfortable with their continuance.  It's good to be reminded occasionally that there are real people out there paying a real price for our policies, most of which are just a rubber stamp of last year;s policies.

As to the cheap applause, that's been going on for as long as there's been politicians and stand up comics (is there a difference?).  Then again, this guy is probably set for life now.  The insatiable 24 hour news media will follow this guy to see how he ends up.  Unless Obama completely loses his political sensibilities, he'll be given some 6 figure cushy gov't job or consulting gig, and the GOP will happily play along to fast track any approvals needed.  And I'd give odds that all this was vetted before the ink was dry on the speech.

Not by name, no.  But I do a fair amount of work with an adaptive ski program, so I run into a lot of amputees.  Most of them are military.  I'm more aware than most of how many people have been maimed over the last decade or so.

Chris Hayes made a good point about the disconnect between the 2 minutes of applause this guy got for his story of heroism and the horrible price he paid for it, and the vague smattering of applause elicited when Obama talked about ending the "permanent war footing" that directly caused his disfigurement.

Basically, we've learned nothing.

2014-01-29 10:30:54 AM
Remsburg, who sat next to First Lady Michelle Obama during the speech, was injured by a roadside bomb during his 10th deployment.

If you want 10 year oil wars, let's institute a draft. Maybe a few years from now, Jenna Bush or some Senator's son can sit deaf, dumb and torn in the halls of Congress while other members of Congress applaud their sacrifice.

Many of these veterans volunteered to kill OBL, as the President said at ground zero. Not to protect the Oil Ministry building in Iraq.

Fark Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle...
