Here, I'll save you some time,  In a nutshell: Wants to spend all kinds of money on all these wonderful programs (that never work), even though the country is broke; it's Congress' fault for everything that has gone wrong, or will go wrong; man made climate change is real, because he says so; even though he could have closed GITMO 4 years ago when he had full control of the house AND senate, THIS is the year, for sure, no kidding this time; and pay no attention to those with facts to say otherwise- the ACA is working great! Oh, and we need more government, because the country will never function correctly without it.

I had a choice last night. I could watch the SOTU, or I could watch one of the various Republican responses to the SOTU, or I could fire up Netflix and watch a couple of episodes of Dexter. I didn't feel like wasting my time watching a sociopath desperately try to convince the world that they are normal and can actually feel compassion towards their fellow human beings, so I decided to watch Dexter instead. I think I made the right choice.

I heard Arizona Senator David Schweikart on NPR this morning on his opinions of the SOTU Address.

He basically said that the Presendent hasn't done anything to work with the Republicans on fixing Obamacare. Those 40+ votes repealing Obamacare wasn't actually about repealing it, but about fixing and adjusting small problems the Republicans have with the ACA, and the President refuses to hear or work woth the Republicans on those issues.

He ignored the fact that they actually were about repealing Obamacare and that when the President actually did try to address the Republicans concerns, they all turned around and voted against fixing the bill.

Schweikart then expressed confusion on why the President then just did an executive action to make those adjustments rather than working with Congress to fix them.

"Sure Obama mentioned income inequality and climate change and the gender pay gap, but why not devote equal time to [INSERT PET ISSUE HERE]? I guess Obama really is just like the conservatives that stymie his efforts to make even minor progressive change! I should probably not vote in 2014 to raise awareness of how alienated I, as a liberal, feel by not having the president personally share each of my concerns."

Some people are liberals or leftists out of personal conviction and deep seated values.

Some people champion such causes because it gives them an identity and attention.

We see it on the right all the time; the left is sadly not immune from such behavior.

I missed the SOTU but did tune in just as the Senator from Washington started the rebuttal. First three minutes were "Get to the point!" Then she started mouthing off about how the Republicans have been working to raise the middle class and how that's there number one priority. I managed to NOT throw something at the TV (Seriously, what have they done in this regard? Give me ONE example!). Then she went back to fluff so I had to shut it off.

And there you have it. There were four Republican responses to the SOTU address. Four.

Obama is successful because he has no opposition. They are a mob, not a unified party anymore.
Sorry Republicans. An organized force will rout a disorganized force every time.

2014-01-29 12:35:23 PM
I personally would prefer a much more pessemistic SOTU address.  All doom and gloom, spooky, and armageddony.

The GOP official response would likely get derped delayed for about an hour, and probably ring with much less of air of desperation.

2014-01-29 12:36:11 PM

AntiNerd: There was a SOTU?

Seriously, I would appreciate it if some cast-iron stomach individual here would go over and look, then summarize the responses over at freeperland.

I truly hope that the first conservative president after this individual makes the radical change of returning the SOTU to a written format.
To start with, the constitution requires (Article II, Section 3) the POTUS to give the SOTU, but for a long time, it was just a written document sent to congress.
In 1801, Thomas Jefferson discontinued the practice of delivering the address in person, regarding it as too monarchical (similar to the Speech from the Throne in Britain). Instead, the address was written and then sent to Congress to be read by a clerk until 1913 when Woodrow Wilson re-established the practice.

Freepers want to go backward to the technology of pen and paper.

This one is so dumb it almost isn't funny.... almost.

Obama took on a more pragmatic tone than in previous State of the Union addresses, acknowledging that getting his agenda past House Republicans was unlikely and therefore he would use his power to do what he can on his own"
looks like this writer is redefining Hugo Chavez (Mao Stalin Hitler and any despot) as a "pragmatist"

Ugh... I was listening to the radio the other day and there was a tea bagger who is running against Lindsey Graham. He stated that cooperation in congress is everything that is wrong with American politics today. He honest to god said that.

My Lying Sack Of shiatTM detector just went off.

First off, the President doesn't control congress. You wanted to say "full cooperation."

Secondly, congress voted against that specifically. So he didn't have have cooperation, like you just lied that he did.

In closing, you're a liar.

That seems to me a different issue. That's what happens when you give freshmen access to academic literature on social theory without the ability to understand context or historicity. They know the buzzwords and can use them, but don't understand why they're saying words like "privilege." That will sort itself out in a few years once their understanding of social theory matures.

The others will likely go through their entire lives wondering why this country is so full of ignorant rednecks and why Democrats are always so spineless.

Interestingly enough much talk on right wing radio programs (moreso the local than the national) lately has been about how spineless the Republican party is, how they have abandoned their principals and don't represent the speaker any longer. The problem with extremists on both sides is that they see compromise as a loss when in reality it is the only way to effectively govern.

The difference is the Left's extremists are on Tumblr, and the Right's are in congress.
