/I'm not interested in whether you think the book sucks, or the author is a hack, or what you think of Afghanistan. This book made me bawl my eyes out.

Subbymust read a lot of fiction. Try some non-fiction if you want something that really emotes. That's not to say it can't be done in fiction, it's just way more common in nf.

I wore a similar outfit while reading American Psycho, by Brett Easton Ellis, but I think it was broken because I felt absolutely nothing.

Subby must not read very much. Or, I'm a pathetic sap as books make me feel emotions all the time and I read a lot of books (2-3 a week on average).

Huh. Opposite here. The only thing the book made me feel was an intense loathing for the main character. The book was well written, and the author provoked that emotional response from me, but I just didn't particularly enjoy it.
