"To steal a book is an elegant offense," Doctoroff told me. "It's recovering wisdom. Especially if you were not supposed to read the book in the first place. In China, people do get the link between IP and innovation, for example, but it doesn't go very deep.  Companies like Universal and Warner Brothers will just have to lower their margins to next to nothing to compete. A sale is a sale; some money is better than no money at all. This is a society where, if you open a fake Apple store, people start writing articles about how innovative and creative you are," he said.

What makes them look like scofflaws is in 2007 82% of installed software in Communist China was pirated.

Libertarians and Tea Party would love it though! Free Market and all that. Maybe they should move there.

An industrial economy doesn't care about the concerns of a post-industrial society?  Quelle surprise!  They're not going to be concerned about IP rights until its production becomes a major part of their economy.

The store fronts are fake and just for show. The buildings are empty and are just used to make it look like an affluent shopping area. So, why are they wrong in calling it Potempkin-like?

A postdoc I shared office space with was reading journal articles on day and found one that had ripped off an earlier paper he published.  Without turning around I asked what part of China the authors came from.  He said Shanghai.

'Communist' China? Not to be excessively pedantic, but there ain't nuthin' remotely "communist" about the country. 19th century robber baron capitalist, yes, but they haven't been communist in three decades.

They sell men's clothes as well.  It's not great quality, but it's cheap.

You're still not totally wrong.

Anyway.
I was just reading or hearing soemthing about how American publishers in the 19th century were big Copyright scofflaws and how Dickens came here and was chased out of the country when he complained about that. So... I guess tough titties.

It's only racist if ...um... eh whatever. at least half of the articles I read coming out of China are eerily similar to previously published pieces from elsewhere, the other half are mostly made up. i also read one series from a research group which was basically throwing carbon nanotubes on different things: sample holders, foils, heating elements, etc. publish or make cheap electronics for the rest of the world i suppose

i don't think they are really ashamed, as much as they think they deserve the real thing. the arrogance is really off the charts in china these days. baseless indignation.

My God, the Chinese are so devious. No reputable Western company would ever put up a fake storefront to give potential real estate investors the idea of potential business opportunities.

Local news reports say that the buildings are completely empty. The real estate is for sale, and the idea behind the name fakery is to show what the street would look like if it were full of prosperous international brands.

This is news?

It's not meant to fool anyone. It's just supposed to be illustrative.

Also, it's "Potemkin". Really, people.

This is one of the problems I have with people from the US dealing with the Chinese nationals.  They are all thieves.  It is not a race thing, it is a national culture thing.  I is our own judgmental nature that makes it a bad thing, hence a bad thing to accuse them of.  To them, it is not a bad thing, it is just the way things are.  It is just part of the hustle and mainland Chinese have been trained to be masters.

It is one of the reasons that pure Communism could never work in the long run with the Chinese.  They are a culture very close to Ferengi and they were capitalists a thousand years before Europeans came to America.

When the China bubble bursts and it will. You can't build "ghost cities" with loans from "shadow banks" forever then populate these cities with displaced farmers and fill them with pirated western crap to crap. There entire economy is based on illusion. It may look like a fancy new bridge but it's really made of Styrofoam and garbage. Whilst our economy is basically an extortion racket. So in the the 21st century it's basically now it's the Kingdom of the Liars vs. Kingdom of the Thieves.
