Both countries are going through what the US did in the 1800's, with mostly unregulated factory growth to fuel their desperate economies, but China's centralized economy at least controls the distribution and spreads the pain around.

Except both countries have the knowledge and means NOT to pollute.   The West in the 1800s lacked a lot of that.  (Thanks Christianity for 1000 years of scientific stagnation).

433: Well then why don't they close that one down and open up a new Delhi?

I was staying in new delhi recently, I thought "damn this place is disgusting" then I went to delhi (very close by) and it was MUCH cleaner. Odd that.

maxheck: My experience with Dehli... Libertarian paradise. Walled gardens for the wealthy, and fark the poors. What was kinda cool was the stream of scrubbed and dressed kids who filed out every day out of absolute "washing one's self from wastewater" shantytowns to attend school. People really do try hard to make sure their kids aren't farked over as hard as they are.

The poor women cut grass with a hand sickle. Trash everywhere, prices are not fixed and a car horn is how people navigate in traffic. They have weaponized hawkers and beggars. Major focus on owning gold. Every Libertarian needs to go there and see how it feels when your ideology turns out to be cruel and fuels corruption.

There is a reason why Libertarianism, Communism and "Compassionate Conservatism" are associated with dumbass college students and people who have never been more than a day's walk outside of their home town. You can believe in things so long as you don't ever have to see them in practice.

We're not going to Deli. We're going to Pankkot Palace.

Nemo's Brother: MayoSlather: As much as I like to complain about the US, we're a f'ing utopia next to India. Of course American capitalism has had a hand in making their country a shiat hole, but we're still better, suck it India.

The Caste System still permeates in the India psyche. You really can't have a free, democratic society while that remains. They created their own problems, just like every other country.

In part, but we outsource labor to them because it's profitable for our businesses. America holds leverage in the global economy and we make deals with developing nations looking to insert themselves into the modern economy on the basis we can exploit them, that they won't tax us beyond a certain amount or pass labor laws that drive up costs.

Yes, countries should be responsible for themselves, but we don't get a pass for being exploitative.

Just a few days [let alone a lifetime] of this smog is awful for you. My folks were in China and got sick within days, coughing like crazy.

Ow! That was my feelings!: QU!RK1019: Cyrusv10: Bu....bu...bu...but...America is a terrible, oppressive polluter.  Someone should do something about American smog production!!

Come take in a nice fat breath of Wasatch Front smog, where just breathing is equivalent to smoking one cigarette a day, and tell me we shouldn't do something about pollution, asswipe.

So, what should we do about it? What's the solution?

The solution will have many parts. Some have been mentioned. Additionally, we could think about not producing everything we buy in China.

Give it 10 years and much of that production will be back.  China's like India for programmers.

*Oh my god, it's so cheap to build, and I don't have to deal with unions.*
*Oh shiat, they stole my designs, cut the quality, and were running a third shift out of the back room*
*Which one of those is better?*
*Oh, they're not nearly as cheap as they used to be?  And there's these things called robots?*
*Robots it is, then.*

/And the great unsung advantage of electric cars is that you can put the power plant in a place where there isn't a temperature inversion, and still drive your cars without having noted smog issues.
//Seriously, this is the effect of California's strategy.
