Well, there's many a strange impulse out on the plains of West Texas.
There's many a young boy who feels things he can't comprehend.
Well, a small town don't like it when somebody falls between sexes.
No, a small town don't like it when a cowboy has feelings for men.

And I believe to my soul that inside every man there's the feminine.
And inside every lady there's a deep manly voice loud and clear.
Well, a cowboy may brag about things that he's done with his women.
But the ones who brag loudest are the ones that are most likely queer.

Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other.
Say, what do you think all them saddles and boots was about?
And there's many a cowboy who don't understand the way that he feels for his brother.
And inside every cowboy there's a lady that'd love to slip out.

And there's always somebody who says what the others just whisper.
And mostly that someone's the first one to get shot down dead.
So when you talk to a cowboy don't treat him like he was a sister.
You can't fark with the lady that's sleepin' in each cowboy's head.

Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other.
What did you think all them saddles and boots was about?
And there's many a cowboy who don't understand the way that he feels for his brother.
And inside every lady there's a cowboy who wants to come out.
And inside every cowboy there's a lady that'd love to slip out.

This is a thing now - a fake reality show (redundant) with two recurring plots (snobs vs. slobs, fish-out-of-water) is a cultural touchstone.  It signifies the identity of a self-selected group of Americans.

At least we don't have real problems to worry about.

Because it's easier to equivocate. The media isn't about journalism or facts, it's about giving both sides of an argument equal weight, as if both sides are legitimate. It's not that homophobia is "hot", it's that it's easier to justify with "well, that's his faith, it's how he was raised"; it's not as easy to justify racism.

Hell, look how far off the deep end Republicans have had to go before they started getting called on their sh*t, and even then they still let them spin and dodge questions when asked for clarification.

I'm reminded of Dukes of Hazzard, which signified through wearing the same clothes every episode that it was basically a live action cartoon.  This is similar.

Personally, I'm waiting for the day Real Americans go all out and wear USA Zubaz pants to the SOTU.  It will be the flag pin of the next generation of conservatives.

"Where are Obama's Zubaz pants?  I guess he doesn't really love America."

Well, the GOP and also the Small Business Administration.   Their small business status doesn't have anything to do with the show.  It has to do with Duck Commander, the line of duck calls that the family has been producing since somewhere in the mid-1970s.  I believe the definition of Small Business means the business is privately owned and has less than 500 employees.

Look, I am not an apologist for these guys.  I have watched the show, and its just bad and getting worse.  I just think if you are going to denigrate someone, do it on the basis of more grounded facts, and the facts are the show is just bad.

As for the yuppie looking pics, there is no great controversy there.  Those came from the back of a book that the family wrote, so its not some major feat of undercover journalism.   They admit that they used to grow beards during duck season and decided it was a good brand image for the company, so kept them.  This was about 10 years ago, well before the current show started.

I used to like their show on the Outdoor Channel, and watched a couple of their DVDs.  Sad to see the current show has left the actual hunting behind and replaced it with canned goofiness.

Ah hell, I've posted once in this thread and will likely get slammed for it, so might as well go all in.

I would go with the Potter Stewart-esque definition.   You know it when you see it.

For me, if your primary source of protein is provided by your hand, or someone in your immediate family, that qualifies you.  Bonus points, or bonus red,  if you have more than one meal a year of frog or squirrel that you have caught/killed on your own.

Of course, one could go the other way and build a list of exclusions.  For example, if you have a four wheel drive vehicle and your tires never leave a paved or gravel road, by default you are NOT a red neck.

It's a value judgment.   It's like determining whether a black guy is a THUG.  It tells you about the one passing judgment in relation to the one being judged.

So in my position, as an educated upper-middle class white guy, I judge him to be a fake redneck.  What do you call college educated, multi-millionaire, television star who intentionally turns himself into a caricature in order to better market himself to rednecks?

Wyalt Derp: I'm confused - I thought it was the Libs who worshipped celebrities?

Well that's highly subjective. If you count Rush Limbaugh and his ilk, conservatives worship them like the Thugge worship Kali in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Being the projectionists they are however, they think that "liberals" who like Hollywood movies are just as fanatical about their movie stars as they are. They also resent any charity or Samaritan work Hollywood elitists do, especially if it's overseas. And then there's the whole hatred of "gay" lovers, which should be pretty much eradicated in a  decade or so.

Once again, and this happens all the time. You're mistaking mocking with hate or fear. This happens whenever someone laughs at a redneck or Sarah Palin or Bush or in this case, someone pretending to be a redneck, who are laughing at rednecks more than we are laughing at the rednecks. Not fear, mocking. Get that through your heads and you'll be happier.

This is not the 19th century. There is nothing to fear from rednecks. Only mockery. Unless I get caught in a horror movie where I'm in the woods but I'll just throw the blond girls at you and run to civilization.

The only thing not fake about these people is that I believe Phil Robertson is an actual racist. The story about how great he was as a football player is by far the most obvious.

Story: Phil Robertson was a great college QB who turned down the NFL.

Fact: Phil Robertson was never drafted in the NFL at a time the NFL had 17 rounds and drafted 400+ players. The NFL and AFL had combined their drafts by this time, so their were no duplicate selections. Tom Brady is considered a Cinderella story after being drafted in the sixth round.

Story: Phil Robertson started ahead of Terry Bradshaw for two seasons.

Fact: Freshmen were not eligible to play varsity football in the NCAA until 1972, therefore he only started ahead of him for one season. Robertson then quit football "to hunt" the following season. Him starting over Bradshaw is more likely due to seniority and bringing Bradshaw along slowly than it was talent. Bradshaw was the number overall draft pick in 1970. It's hard to believe a guy who wasn't even drafted was ever better than him.

Duck Commander, the company, had a revenue in the $40 million range.
Most definitions, that I can find, quote a maximum revenue of $7 million to be considered small. Huge exceptions are made for construction though.

If you call yourself a redneck, then I am content to repeat your claim. Who cares? Determining the authenticity of anyone's redneck status is shallow and vapid. Oh no, they might not actually be a member of this group associated with horrible racism, poverty, stupidity and crime. They might be faking it. That's like the arguments about what rap songs are 'real' rap because the people making them actually committed crimes and shiat.

The greater issue is, you might really be an idiot if- and there we go.
