(Yahoo)   The Republican game plan on State of the Union day is to engage the president in a spirited debate about the merits of his ideas and their competing philosophies of governance. Just kidding, they are going to try and drown him out   (news.yahoo.com) divider line 115

I'm so shocked, truly..

2014-01-28 01:19:02 PM
They're all going to drop their pencils at the same time, then every Republican will start a low pitched hum.

When you don't have a better argument, yell louder.

Hey, works for many Fox News hosts.

*throws up hands*

that's it, I give up. There is NO reasoning with you people! Fark, it's like you don't even want the jobs you've been elected to. Fine, you want to play that, then as God/Allah/Buddha/Visnu/FSM as my witness, you will never get my vote

They are all going to cut one at the same time.

You mean like a media blitz? Well that has never happened again, I am shocked and outraged.

Their voices will be reinforced by an army of Republican lawmakers, surrogates, pundits, activists, rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, shiat-kickers and Methodists.

I am really disappointed that their entire purpose, their only intent is to object to everything the President says.  There will be no effort to suggest they have better options, there will be no effort to work together to achieve a reasonable conclusion, it will be nothing but "He's wrong" ad infinitum.

Not that this is any change from the past 5 years, but nonetheless.

Working together is socialism.

Well, they tried the dehydrated approach last time with Rubio... Might as well try drowning this time.

But seriously, it's like the GOP is determined to look like a bunch of petulant children as often as they can.

Good luck with that, I guess.

Can you imagine preemptive rebuttals of State of Union addresses in the Reagan years? How far we've come.

2014-01-28 02:05:56 PM
Remember America,

At one point Donald Trump was at the top of Republican polls for President of the United States.

President Donald Trump.

Study it out.

This is simple to counter... Obama just needs to write a second speech and not give away ANY details until he appears in front of that podium. He gets up, makes his new statements, and is done. The GOP isn't known for being fast on their feet, so it would probably be next Tuesday before they could come up with a rebuttal for the new speech.

So I see the Republicans are going with the "Divided we fall" strategy and the media is trying to cast it as "Unified effort to drown out the President".

That's a lot of Sharpies on the palm.

In my more paranoid moments I think this is a deliberate effort to draw a connection in the minds of the electorate between "Democratic Administration" and "gridlock", and run campaigns saying basically "Democratic presidents mean gridlock. Republican presidents don't," and I'm not sure the American people are smart enough to realize why Democratic administrations end up that way. You see it here on Fark with depressing frequency, usually from people who should know better: "Why won't the President just work with Republicans?" It's extremely depressing.

Negative. This idea presupposes that the GOP rebuttal is dependent on the actual content of Obama's speech.

While the conduct itself is shockingly dumb what you should really be upset about is how well it's worked.  The President hasn't been able to pass any of his signature agenda items for this year because of a phenomenally childish opposition. I can't blame the Republicans for acting like they are because they've pretty much been at it since President Obama took office.  I can be dismayed that the President continues to treat them with a level of respectability that isn't deserved and certainly isn't reciprocated.

It's cute that you think the GOP will actually discuss the points in Obama's speech.

Gone are the days when the party without keys to the White House delivered merely one post-STFU response.

*sigh* Guess we're going to have to blacken them eyes a bit...

It's completely empty posturing for cash. That's what our Congress does these days. At least in Louis XIV's day you got some orgies and wall-pissing to go with the court posturing.

And Obama will trumpet the same tired partisan points. Oh goodie.

2014-01-28 02:14:58 PM
Will they at least pay attention to what Obama actually says and talk about that, instead of making claims about things that Obama said in his speech based on writing their response days in advance?

This is great news for Obama. The more the GOP yells the more likely it is they will say stupid things that can be used against them in the next election.

Sure, they COULD craft a carefully considered counterpoint and stick to that. But where's the fun in that?

I bet they Benghazi the IRS repeal.

/Did you know that a fourth American died on 9/11?

In all seriousness, this'll probably work. The news outlets will probably give equal time to the State of the Union and each response, which means that the coverage breakdown will be 1/5 Democrat and 4/5 Republican.

2014-01-28 02:17:17 PM
Because nothing says "Party Unity" like 3 different responses - all from Republicans - featuring lawmakers from 3 different parts of the country (KY, WA and UT).

Also, I thought the GOP's 2014-2016 strategy was "for the totally hetero love of Republican Jesus, keep these chucklefarks AWAY from cameras!"

Last year Rubio made statements about "today we heard from the president about X", because they thought that Obama was going to talk about that topic when in fact he talked about something quite different.

I will personally move to the district of and vote for the congressperson who shouts "penis" the loudest during the speech. Difficulty: must be audible on C-SPAN.

I'm hoping the Teabaggers will keeping cutting huge, loud farts throughout the entire address. Like this kid in class during an exam.

On the bright side, the responses will be 1/2 vapid and 1/2 batshiat crazy and make them look even more pathetic.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'll be brief. The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules, or took a few liberties with our female party members - we did.  But you can't hold a whole political party responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole two-party system? And if the whole political system is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our democratic institutions in general? I put it to you, Mr. Obama - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America!

There's nothing more representative of a democracy than how much more you can out-mob your ideological opponents.  Drowning out the message is obviously a valid tactic when people would rather watch the bachelor and get their news from "The Chat/Chew/View" and Honey BooBoo.

proceed with the aforementioned deed sodomite!
