If you're booking a flight on southwest and it says "serviced by AirTran", change your flight.

Goddamn does AirTran suck, especially when you were expecting Southwest:

* Baggage fees
* Assigned seats at checkin, not when you book your ticket. And you can't change it until you're at the gate.
* Probably the tightest seat pitch and smallest leg room I've ever sat in on any airplane. And I've flown on lots of turboprops and puddle-jumpers.
* There's a first class section, so you've got to trek to the back to use the bathroom

if you book on AirTran fight the baggage fee when you check in - we did that at Thanksgiving (booked through SW but the flight was operated by AT) and we had no fees coming or going.

Word is Southwest will implement checked bag fees at the end of the year.

Considering that "no bag fees" is their gimmick, it certainly would be stupid of them.

On their website, it says if you book through southwest.com, you should get no baggage fees, but if you book through airtran.com for the same flight, then you'd have the baggage fees. Mind you, they probably hope you forget by then.

Coca Cola has christmas polar bears all locked up even though they didn't run that ad this year.

I'm expecting the FAA to require carriers to include one checked bag in the price of airfare. All the carry ons are shifting the CoG up too high.

Plus 1

Southwest is the best airline though so it makes me happy to see them add international service.

No change fees are a dream for a business traveler.

I was expecting a story about Austin, TX.  I leave disappointed, both in subby and in the general state of the airline industry.

I thought they were doing fine filling the hold with fruit/UPS boxes/mail/dead bodies/etc (as part of the motivation toward bag fees).

I'm assuming he meant TV ads.  A little website mention is nothing compared to talking about it half a dozen times during every NFL game.

200 bags X's 75lbs = nothing compared to the 50,000lbs of jet fuel.

It is increasingly tough to compete against. Customers cost them slightly more (higher weight per person), and revenue from fees has a tax advantage (specific taxes are levied only against fares)

I think they're floating a trial balloon, and in the end they'll allow one free bag but charge for the second one. That gives them a lot of extra revenue, but still separates them from the pack.
