GavinTheAlmighty: Pope Larry II: I wouldn't count on him being re-elected, it's a long shot now at best. He's the only major candidate so far and his only big campaign speech was overshadowed by him getting stuck in an elevator for an hour. The speech he did deliver was torn to shreds in the papers as being mostly BS. His hard-core supporters will still vote for him, if they vote at all, but the rest of the city will look elsewhere. The only good thing about the Ford Mayoralty is that it has engaged citizens in municipal politics like no other time, which is bad for Ford.He still has a dangerously high level of approval for someone as consistently incompetent and factually incorrect as him. For the life of me, I can't figure out the motivations of his supporters. Watching him in budget committee meetings is horrifying. He has no idea how basic arithmetic works.
moogoob: brantgoose: Arkanaut: bigbadideasinaction: If John Tory or Denzil Minnam-Wong runsAre those actual names of politicians or are these Canadianisms?John Tory is a real politician but the name Denzil Minnam-Wong sounds totally made up. However, his Wikipedia article says that he is the son of a Chinese immigrant, Denzil Minnam-Wong Sr.My guess is that Denzil is a name that Mr. Minnam Wong Sr. picked out of the credits of a Denzil Washington movie. With the growing multiculturalism of Canadian cities, it is only a matter of time that start get names even weirder than that. Shaquille Smythe-Yabouti, maybe, or Maboob Kruger-Falshingham III. Hard to beat good old Puritan names like Moab Is My Washpot Truckle though. One of my favourite weird names belongs to a couple of my ancestors, by name of Twaddle. Old colonial names like that have been disappearing in America (and Canada also). You still find a few in England though.I grew up as a white guy in Toronto, and still live here (and yes I'm still white :p ). Yes, the city is well over 50% immigrant in many places, ad just over 50% overall. I like seeing "weird" names, reminds you the world ain't just white people. Better IMO have the Rob Fords and Carolyn Bennets mixed in with a Denzil Minnan-Wong or Cezar Palacio than a sea of ordinary white-bread./My elementary school classes had Nigerian kids with names like "Bright"//who were promptly made fun of by Italian (who weren't white, of course) Polish (who somehow *were* considered white), and Spanish(what everyone called Hispanic) kids who would be the ones getting made fun of in less-immigranty neighbourhoods///I could write a book about "race" in Toronto communities. It's weird.
Pope Larry II: indarwinsshadow: Interesting information a couple of weeks back about retard Rob (article from the Toronto Star). Seems he cut the budget so much over the past couple of years, there wasn't enough money allocated for crews to go out and trim over hanging branches and dead tree limbs that were in danger of falling on over head wires. "Hey, look I just saved the city $250,000" crowed the Toronto tub of lard. Of course, it will now cost upwards of $30 million to repair all of the downed lines and restore power to thousands left in the dark after the Dec. ice storm, not to mention the costs that insurance have incurred by claims. So, the total for the ice storm of 2013 will probably top $100 million when all is totalled up. All so this f*cking coke sniffing sack of sh*t could save a measly $250 grand. I hate stupid. I don't just dislike it, I absolutely hate stupid. And Rob is the king of stupid, along with the cadre of apologist idiots who defend this morons behaviour all because they have a hard on for ultra right wing dick heads . .Most of Ford's savings are in the form of deferred maintenance, deferred hiring, deferred everything. They are short term gains, but end up costing more in the long run. even he is backing away from his "saved a billion dollars claim".
yakmans_dad: What amazes me is not this guy's antics. What amazes me is that he'd easily be re-elected.Canada must be an exceeding grey, lusterless land where movement of any kind is rewarded with attention and approval.
sno man: The Star article's picture is from a presser last week. Here is what he wore to the presser yesterday:[img.fark.net image 430x298]I'll just leave this here....Specifically, he's wearing the jersey of Orlando Franklin, the Broncos' starting RT who grew up in Toronto after being born in Jamaica. We bring this up not because it's crazy for a mayor to wear a football jersey of a player from his city before the Super Bowl, but a) because it's Rob Ford and b) because this brought us THE BEST TWEET OF ALL TIME:The world is again captivated by a media & police pursuit of a slow moving white Ford Bronco MT - Ziad Fazel (@ZiadFazel)So rarely has a tweet nailed it on so many levels.
