WanPhat: Pete Seeger was still alive?  Wow, I would have guessed he was gone along time ago.  He's cool, no disrespect, but he seemed old 40 years ago.  I learned about Pete Seeger as a historical figure when I was in grade school and I'm old.

Because human beings think it's sad when someone dies, nno matter how old they are. It's a normal, healthy emotional response.

It infuriates me that conservatives pillory naive ex-Communists, and yet they absolve anyone who was an extremist on the right, like the Birchers and the Ayn Rand cultists and the KKK.

fark you you cynical fark. Music has always been an inspirational force and the fact that it can move people to action is a historical fact.
His music quite literally had an impact, an effect. It changed the course of history without a bullet, without a gun.

I would love to know what outside influences define your personal ethos, unless of course it is all entirely based on a personally written manifesto.

Pretty sure trolling was the only "personal ethos" on display there.

goddammitsomuch. I can't tell anymore. Poe's law and all that.

:-)

It was about 80% troll and 20% honest.  I'm surprised I didn't hook more.

But more words will be spilled over Seeger in the next week than have ever been written in the popular media about WEB DuBois, Frederick Douglass, and Paul Laurence Dunbar.  And that makes me sad.

El Supe: purdeyisa10: Seven decades of kicking fascist ass.
Now that's entertainment.

I'm not going to win any popularity contests here but when the Soviet Union was aligned with Germany 1939-1941 Seeger was a vociferous opponent of the US getting  into the war.  He followed the party line.  Then when Fascist Germany and Communist Russia had a falling out, that's when he became anti-Fascist. He and his folk group had released a song just before the German attack on Russia in 1941 attacking Roosevelt for aiding the Democratic countries, then they had to change the lyrics 180 degrees and tried to get back as many of the 'politically incorrect" records as they could.

ginandbacon: SoupJohnB: I went to see him at a college concert, back in the day.  At one point, another student jumped up on stage and used the mic to announce that the National Guard had fired upon and killed students at Kent State.  The gym erupted with a mixture of anger and confusion.  Good ol' Pete then tried his best to keep the lid on the crowd, pleading for peace and calm.

Many ignored his advice, though, and the campus was closed for a few days during the aftermath.  Poignant memory.

Wow. That's quite a moment.

So was facing my father back home, who was clutching a "Nastygram" from the college dean!

GibbyTheMole: Coincidentally, I just watched the "Greenwich Village: Music That Defined a Generation" documentary on Netflix last night, which featured a lot on Pete Seeger. I never was much of a folkie, but I've gained an appreciation for it after watching the film. Seeger was a remarkable guy who helped make the world a better place. Godspeed, sir... and thanks for all you did.

Pete's a great point to get into the folk movement(s) in this country, as he was part of several of them, from looking for songs in the South in the 30s to the anti-fascist movement in the 40s to the rise of popular folk in the 50s and early 60s.  He always gave credit when he sang someone else's song, and knew the origins of most traditional folk songs as back as far as they could be traced (his father was a Harvard-trained musicologist).

About the only thing he didn't like was the lyrics to "Greensleeves", which became a running joke for the Weavers.
