IF DUI person is trying to drive away: don't try to stop them.  Get the license, call 911, try not to get run over.

IF DUI person is running away from the car: don't try to stop them.  Their car is right there.

This story has to be fake. Traffic doesn't go fast enough to kill anybody on LA freeways.

AverageAmericanGuy: Let this be a lesson to you. Don't be a vigilante.

It wasn't so much vigilante as it was stupidity.

"They were trying to talk to the driver and then another car came and struck them. They were in the middle of the freeway."

I get wanting to stop a guy but wandering out into the middle of the freeway isn't the right place to do it.  If you were trying to save his life, that's amazingly kind and altruistic of you.  If all you're trying to do is stop him from getting away, that's stupid.  That's why we pay trained professionals to do that.

Great advice.  I'm scared to death just to change a tire by the side of the road.   Drivers are crazy even when not drinking.

In the UK, the ever so trusting police will escort you to the back seat of their car so they don't have to shout over traffic, and more importantly so they and the "stopee" have some protection in the event some idiot veers into the hard shoulder.

Would never happen here in the US, at least not without being cuffed.

A couple of( insert favorite bad driver stereotypical ethnicity here)gentlemen had a rear ender in fast traffic on the 710 a few mornings ago. They are standing between the two vehicles yammering and waving their arms. They are in the number three lane I am in a 1 ton service bed doing 60 plus and see the cars in front of me disappearing left and right and it is a strait in approach and this truck ain't stopping  for two idiots in front of me arguing.
I hit the  car so hard and it hit the car in front a millisecond later it was simultaneous bang... Both of the guys arguing pop out ten feet in the air one to the left and one to the right arms flailing also since they  recently had their legs amputated it looked like a rocket ship of blood. Then, they were then hit by cars at about windshield level as I slid by eating airbag.
Actually I was standing on the brake  and pulling on the steering wheel so hard my butt was of the seat.
Maybe a foot to spare.
The moral is stay in your car after an accident.

I suspected as much.  The 70 year old lady should have her driving privilege reviewed though.

If they had allowed the drunk driver to attempt his escape, chances are he is the one who would have been struck by an oncoming car and the world might have been a better place for it.

If you are involved in an accident and cannot pull over onto the shoulder, you should stay in your car until all traffic around you has stopped.

To be fair, the man had just had his bell rung. We see cases where people do weird things after accidents and make "bath salt" or "crack smoker" jokes, but they're impaired from a concussion and really need a neurological consult.

Not the best idea IMO. I rear ended a Mazda 323 while going about 70 in the pitch black. The dumbass had failed to make any attempt to pull off the road, and did not engage his warning flashers. Pushed their trunk straight through the passenger compartment. They were sitting on the raised median and would have been liquified if they remained in the car.

I would suggest that a dark empty road can be considered on par with one in which traffic has come to a stop. The general idea is to use your common sense and not to step out when there is moving traffic around you.

In a previous century, when Ms Capt and I were still dating, she crashed into another car because of icy driving conditions. Her reflex was to step out of her car to asses to damage. I, being of a cooler mind, pulled her right back in just instants before another sliding car hit us broadside on the driver's side, right where Ms Capt was about to be standing... it was a slow-speed crash that left little damage on the cars, but I suspect that flesh and bones would not have fared as well.

I've always told myself if I ever get a flat on a highway I'm gonna keep driving until I can exit the no matter how much I fark my car up.

You are exactly right and I support everything you said, except the assertion that the drunk is driving their own car.
If you're going to DUI, you'd might as well do it in a stolen car.

Well...I'm not going to argue that it is worth risking death, but keeping the driver on scene isn't entirely pointless either. It  could make a big difference to holding someone accountable.
