Damn,  that Paul Newman sure was a handsome sonofa.....

Damn. How high do you have to be to base jump and get lost on the way down?

OscarTamerz: Too bad he was a respirologist and not a neurosurgeon or orthopod with a better understanding of what a bad idea this is.

Today I learned "respirologist" is Canada-speak for "pulmonologist".

I bet he was one of those clowns trying to get as close to a knob and forgot that with the recent warmness, he would have less lift than if it was cooler.

the_celt: A 41-year-old respirologist from Calgary is dead following a Friday afternoon fall during a wing suit jump from the edge of the Grand Canyon in Arizona

The B stands for building. A span is a bridge.

Married jumper: Hey, I'm going away with the guys for the weekend.
Jumper's wife: Where are you guys going?
Married Jumper: BABE jumping in Nevada.
Jumper's wife: ...
Married jumper: Wellll shiat. We really need to come up with another word for bridge.

eKonk: Sad tag is inappropriate.  The dude jumped off a cliff. He knew the risks.

Cheers to him for dying doing what he enjoyed, not all of us get that.

Something tells me he wasn't enjoying it by the end.

As someone who is jumping out of a plane from 15,000 feet Wednesday, I should not have read any of this.

/First time? No, I've been nervous before.

60 Minutes did a segment on these wing suited base jumpers.  It looks like it would be the ultimate thrill, and I guess it is.

If they saw his chute that means he opened it, so either he screwed up or just as likely something outside of his control happened.

I'm jumping off this canyon if it's the last thing I ever do!

MechaPyx: Good luck! Don't end up on Fark the way this guy did. ;)

It's a hope of mine that if I ever shuffle off this mortal coil in some spectacularly stupid way, that I'd end up on Fark. Even better if there was some way, before I died, to let you people know I was hoping for a green.

If he still hasn't arrived at the floor, then hurry and send helicopters! He's probably floating midway!

Helicopters were unable to retrieve Stather on Friday evening, due to darkness, but an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter returned to the area on Saturday morning.

It's a good thing it had cleared up by then!

Stather, an Alberta Health Services employee, is survived by his parents in Guelph, Ontario.

The last sentence that gravity and Darwin conspired for a win-win.

My mistake.

Stather, an Alberta Health Services employee, is survived by his parents in Guelph, Ontario.

The last sentence reveals that gravity and Darwin conspired for a win-win.

My mistake was less than his mistake.

So how long before the gopro footage is available.

2014-01-27 10:08:32 PM
I've seen Liveleak videos of these jumps.  The guys usually fly close to the walls, then after turning away from the wall they pull the cord.   Sometimes the wind blows them back towards the wall, or sometimes their parachute doesn't deploy as expected and they go out of control into a wall.  I guess it's also possible he clipped the wall while in his wingsuit form, then pulled the cord in desperation when it was too late.

Either way, there's probably a video from his GoPro, I assume he had one.  Who base jumps in this day and age without one? I'd like to see it for educational purposes.

Active skydiver here.  You've got very little to worry about.  I'm assuming you'll do it as a tandem; you'll be in good, professional hands, and with a modern parachute harness that has two separate canopies, an automatic activation device (Google it) and a reserve static lanyard.  It will be an amazing ride.  Have fun, and don't overly worry.  BASE has an entirely different risk profile, and wingsuit BASE is even riskier.  (It's like comparing riding a tricycle in your driveway with riding a motorcycle in city traffic.)

Well, I'm sure that a few seconds of adrenalin is totally worth depriving his family and friends of his presence in their lives for another forty or fifty years.  Good for him.

~~Stather's death is believed to have been the result of fall trauma but the Coconino Country Medical Examiner has launched an investigation.

That's some good police work there, Lou...

His friends were all jumpers, and his family seem to be at peace with his death. You need to stop being so judgemental.

Nutsac_Jim: I bet he was one of those clowns trying to get as close to a knob and forgot that with the recent warmness, he would have less lift than if it was cooler.

If cooler temps can help with lift, then a base jumper could jump off a tall building in Detroit and make it all the way to Canada.  With the right wind, Pennsylvania.

Didn't like peons. Said 'excuse me sir' when trying to walk past him and his wine socializing buddies. Told me not to call him sir in an extremely patronizing manner. That was my only interaction with him and will be the lasting one.

As Norm MacDonald once said, there's two types of cliff divers:  "Grand Champion" and "stuff on a rock".

It's called base jumping, not base arriving, for a reason.

And he was good in the jumping part, no?

symptomoftheuniverse: FTA: Stather's death is believed to have been the result of fall trauma but the Coconino Country Medical Examiner has launched an investigation.

Wow. I'd think this would be what is known as a "no brainer".

If they do not investigate this sort of thing, it would be pretty easy to toss people off of cliffs and say "Hey, I think he had an accident".  Even if they had the accident a day before.

I'm pretty sure they'll find the results that you are expecting, but I can understand why they would want to check it out.

You know what?  You can do 9,999,999 of those things without killing yourself for essentially nothing.

Maybe it's just me, but I love my family and friends more than a momentary rush of brain chemicals.

Others maybe not so much, I guess...
