But there's a difference between now and the past.  The women today are much much more likely to have their own strong income stream or at least the ability to have one and they're also much much more likely to be getting large inheritances (small families and more equal wills and more cash rather than land) which is concentrating the wealth more than before.

Rich and powerful breed only with themselves
We all know what happens when too much of this happens
The offspring they pop out just ain't real bright

I grew up middle-class but married into a wealthy family. I do suspect that my father-in-law saw the advantages of having a CPA in the family, which might have helped me cinch this gig. Because of my tax and business knowledge, my father-in-law is actually closer to me than any of my other in-laws, or his own kids. Several years ago, he was making a toast at a family party and he introduced me as "the son he never had". Only problem - he has a biological son, and the son was there when my FIL made the toast. It was a pretty awkward moment.

Now, now, don't get so down if you don't have any wealth to bring to the table. Just figure out how to elevate your game.

Yeah, this is so wrong because rich and poor people so often have a lot in common and tend to hang out in the same social circles. So why are they marrying their own kind? This must be a recent change from the time when rich people married poor people all of the time. I think I read a harlequin novel once about the duke's daughter falling in love with the stable boy once so it must be true.

Nah, usually it went the other way, a rich guy marrying a hot but low class girl, simply because hot is enough to qualify all by itself.  This doesn't happen as much anymore, I think.  Maybe because ugly rich girls can by a better set of tits and a rhinoplasty to make up for their natural shortcomings.

Rich men do, on occasion, marry down.  Rich women almost never marry down.    So, my poor brothers, feel no guilt in chasing younger, beautiful girls at the expense of the haggy and hideous, it's only right.

Charles Murray - Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010

/Mind you, I think he got seriously raged at for the Bell Curve and not that book because you can't be a culturist* in today's America.

*To wit: The creepy belief that certain behaviors correlate well to success (or don't), that culture is a collection of those behaviors shared amongst a society, and that racial differentials are at least in part due to these cultural differences, and that fixing these differentials in a non-affirmative-actiony way would in part require a complete cultural replacement amongst our failing subgroups.  Like I said, creepy.

elchupacabra: I love how they offer no solution for this.

Solution? We would have to agree that it's a problem. Who someone marries and why is their own damn business. What they do with their own damn money is their own damn business.

Now, talk to me about tax laws, macroeconomic policies to discourage hoarding, and reinforcing the social safety net I'll happily do all day. But say that so and so marrying such and such is wrong ... that's not a discussion. That's a sermon.

My point exactly -- it just sounds like they want the solution to be "hate the rich", because there's no damn way they can offer a solution to the "problem" they artificially pose.
