Are any of those new TLD's really necessary?  Seems to me that they're a money grab.  Nobody thinks to look at anything that's not .com/.edu/.org/.net.

Alright, finally I can register Duke.sucks and auction it off to Drew for millions of dollars!

I thought they were opening up the domain system so someone could make up their own TLD.  Like .apple or .Microsoft or .downstairs, etc.

Actually, that's the problem... If this was 10-15 years ago, the is would be great. Imagine if all car companies and dealers' websites were '.auto', for example, you'd be able to figure out a dealership's website luckylarrysusedcars.auto, for example.
It would alleviate some of this "There's already a website called Lucky Larrys that's a pawn shop", or similar issues, but too many companyies have gotten around this, with funny spellings, playsin words, abbreviations, etc. If they'd had a setup like this from the beginning, it would be great. Now, it's too late, I think. I have a website I may squat on though, now that I think about it.

And why would that be a bad thing? It would be kind of nice to not run the risk every time I test a user's computer of tripping a Rule 34 website. So far, "puppies" is the only truly safe Google search I've found, and I'm sure that won't last long.

Yeah, how could .sucks be anything more than a blatant cash grab. I mean hell the vast majority of .xxx sales were from NON XXX business, but rather corporations just trying to protect themselves from having to deal with walmart.xxx or something like that.

How are they a money grab if no one is going to look for it?  It's either one or the other.

Not sure the problem you have someone wanting to grab money, either.   Every company on earth has a name that is meant to entice a customer.   Should a URL be held to different standards.

You're right, they could neve ever possibly work around things like that. Maybe in 200 years or so, but right now we just don't have th e technological, sociological or cultural ability to possibly do something in like this in a way that makes sense from the beginning because a Farxpert pointed out that we couldn't.

Because current web filters show its trivial, amiright?

BESS blocked the home pages of the Traditional Values Coalition and Massachusetts Congressman Edward Markey.
Cyber Patrol blocked MIT's League for Programming Freedom, part of the City of Hiroshima Web site, Georgia O'Keeffe and Vincent Van Gogh sites, and the monogamy-advocating Society for the Promotion of Unconditional Relationships.
CYBERsitter blocked virtually all gay and lesbian sites and, after detecting the phrase "least 21," blocked a news item on the Amnesty International Web site (the offending sentence read, "Reports of shootings in Irian Jaya bring to at least 21 the number of people in Indonesia and East Timor killed or wounded").
I-Gear blocked an essay on "Indecency on the Internet: Lessons from the Art World," the United Nations report "HIV/AIDS: The Global Epidemic," and the home pages of four photography galleries.
Net Nanny, SurfWatch, Cybersitter, and BESS, among other products, blocked House Majority Leader Richard "Dick" Armey's official Web site upon detecting the word "dick."
SafeSurf blocked the home pages of the Wisconsin Civil Liberties Union and the National Coalition Against Censorship.
SmartFilter blocked the Declaration of Independence, Shakespeare's complete plays, Moby Dick, and Marijuana: Facts for Teens, a brochure published by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (a division of the National Institutes of Health).
SurfWatch blocked such human-rights sites as the Commissioner of the Council of the Baltic Sea States and Algeria Watch, as well as the University of Kansas's Archie R. Dykes Medical Library (upon detecting the word "dykes").
WebSENSE blocked the Jewish Teens page and the Canine Molecular Genetics Project at Michigan State University.
X-Stop blocked the National Journal of Sexual Orientation Law, Carnegie Mellon University's Banned Books page, "Let's Have an Affair" catering company, and, through its "foul word" function, searches for Bastard Out of Carolina and "The Owl and the Pussy Cat."
