Hey, finally one got greened, and with a decent headline.

2014-01-27 03:11:10 PM
Well, when you're twirling your gun around your index finger to show off how cool you are, pelvis injuries are all but inevitable.  I would also imagine many teens lives are saved by other teens holding the gun sideways as they are shooting.

Shoot a shotgun while not leaning forward and see how good your pelvis feels after you get up off of the ground.

Finally Irving got 3 slugs in the belly, it was right outside the Frontier Deli, he was sitting there twirling his gun around and butterfingers Irving gunned himself down.

Can these "adults" that have subby wetting his pants legally purchase firearms?  No?  Why?  Because they're considered too juvenile for the responsibility?  Oh.  How about that.  Also the blase attitude about teenagers getting shot speaks a lot about where your heart is.

Do you have the same response to "child soldier" stories from Africa when you learn that these "children" are actually strapping 14 and 15 year olds?

2014-01-27 03:56:49 PM
subby do you still announce your age including "and a half", why don't you think teenagers are kids?

I know 18 and 19 year olds are practically toddlers, but they can purchase shotguns and rifles, or even go fight and die in Afghanistan.

You do know that it includes 18 and 19 year olds, who by law are allowed to purchase rifles and shotguns, and are allowed to possess handguns, right?

Not only that, but most states allow a person to get their hunting license when they are 12 years old, some even younger.

Oh, well when you put it that way that's a far more acceptable amount of children being shot.

personally I wouldn't refer to a 18 or 19 year old as anything but a "kid", like why do we send kids to go die in pointless hobby wars?

So it is cool that more are killed at home than in war?  Great!  FREEEEEEEEEEEDOM!  But seriously: f*ck them and their lives.

No it is too low.  We need more dead; otherwise I think the ammo manufacturers are just inflating the specs of their wares.  As long as it is HS seniors and not juniors, mind you... we aren't animals here.

This is not really on topic but every single one of those kids are volunteers. If nobody volunteered for the armed forces, there would be nobody to send -- I don't think the administration could levy a draft for something like Iraq in this day (but I could be wrong). I agree that these "hobby wars" are wrong and ill-conceived. Apparently many people do and yet we still have a pretty good supply of volunteers. Here's a thought: if you don't want to die in some stupid shiathole in the middle east, don't volunteer for the job.

I'm sure once you parse out suicides, gang violence, "inner city" people (you know who i mean), left handed people and other significant outliers, the stats are no more outrageous than they'd be in any third-world dystopia.

Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just planning to injure your pelvis?

2014-01-27 04:41:05 PM
84% are 15 - 19?  so what percent is 20 since that age was included?

How many of that 84 are gang related?

Pelvic injuries related to firearms?

kids make impulsive decisions, like signing up to die in some stupid shiathole, that's the major reason i'd refer to them as "kids".

Only 18 and 19yo's ("under 20 years of age") and those are
(a) teenagers (thus, you repeat yourself), and
(b) increasingly referred to simply as children ("boys", rather than "men", and "girls" rather than "women").

More people, especially kids, are injured or killed by the miss use of Dihydrogen Monoxide than guns. I don't see you complaining about that.

manimal2878: More kids each day probably choke on mcdonalds toys.

There's also more regulation in the USA on McDonalds' toys because people can see the inherent danger in allowing them near children.  Non-offgassing plastics, parts small enough to choke on can't be removed etc.

Guns?  Oh no.  Regulation on deadly weapons is wrong because of freedom etc.

Remember this any time you think 'studies' like this are really about anything other than advancing a political agenda.

My daughter's pediatrician hands out material after every visit that talks about the normal things like nutrition, car seats, etc but also includes gun safety.  There's not one word about water safety, and yet drowning kills and injures far, far more.

Yeah, I'd totally bet the vast majority of these "kids" were on their way to donate thousands in pocket money to the local orphanage while unemployed in the worst neighborhoods in the city when they got shot. That's what I'm led to believe based on the gunshot wound victims that come to my ER.

Unless they're screwing their teacher.  Then, according to fark, they're adults capable of making their own decisions.

FTFA:  "Firearm injuries send about 20 U.S. children to the hospital each day, a new study reveals."

A few words later: "About 84 percent of shooting injuries involved teens between 15 and 19 years old."

So which is it?  What's the number of 18 and 19 year olds who are clearly not "children"?

And of course this:  "An overwhelming 89 percent of the patients were male. The firearm injury rate for black males was more than 10 times the rate for white males."

Quit making this about guns.  Tackle the bigger issue of abject poverty, lack of education and lack of parental guidance in predominantly black neighborhoods.  When the only father figure a kid has is a gang banger, WTF do you expect to happen?

Why do you support the United States sending child soldiers to fight foreign wars?

2014-01-27 04:51:12 PM
84% of "victims" were 15-19.
89% are male.
The "injury" rate for blacks is 10 times the rate for whites.
The majority of adolescents were the victims of an assault.

After reviewing those facts I now wonder how many of those people are victims of gang violence. And how many victims of gang violence are gang members?

According to the DOJ's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, "more than half of the homicides reported in Los Angeles are elated to gang violence. I wonder how much more than half, and what both violent crime and youth shooting rates would be if gang related incidents were excluded. But I am not curious enough to request and dig through the data.
