Now there's no need for that kind of language.

"....in fact all physicians take delight in the abuse and torture of the unfortunate subjects."

That pretty much sums up the international medical community's attitude before 1980 to orphans, unwed moms, the mentally ill, the old and poor, the children of the poor, racial minorities, foreigners, etc.

That's not baffling at all. If he, as his letter states, killed Puerto Ricans for no reason other than the fact that he did not like them, then that was murder and it was unethical. His cancer research, which was separate and, AFAIK, conducted properly, is a totally different thing.

Having worked in PR for several projects and implementations -

They [Puerto Ricans] are beyond doubt the dirtiest, laziest, most degenerate and thievish race of men ever inhabiting this sphere. It makes you sick to inhabit the same island with them. They are even lower than Italians. What the island needs is not public health work but a tidal wave or something to totally exterminate the population.

Not far from the truth

As I have watched all the Godfather movies, Goodfellas, and all the seasons of the Sopranos, I do not really want to comment about Italians.

Yeah, yeah, I know.  Ambiguity can be easily resolved.  I don't really believe stupid thought experiments like that prove anything.

Son, we live in a world that has cancer, and that cancer has to be cured by men with needles. Who's gonna do it? You?He has more responsibility than you can fathom. You weep for the Puerto Ricans and curse the doctors. You don't know what I know, the Puerto Rican's death while tragic, probably saved lives. And the doctors existence, while grotesque to you, saves lives! But deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, -- you want him in that lab, you need him in that lab.

/I don't actually hold those views, it just reminded me of that scene from A Few Good Men

In Le Guin's story the suffering of one was necessary for the good of all. The murderous farkblintz didn't have to kill anyone for his research.

==================

I've lived in the NYC area all my life.  I've run into lots of Italians and, to my great, great misfortune, Puerto Ricans.

Italians can be thieving, corrupt, a-holes, but they keep tidy houses, like nice cars/clothes, and they eat well.  The majority of PR's, on the other, have no redeeming social values that I can discern.
