Hopefully Fark can explain to me why this isn;t cute. Because so far, it's cute.

Hamsters are renowned for their startle response.  They have extremely acute hearing as well, so even moderate sudden loudish (or not so loudish) noises directed at them is like someone dropping a metal bucket on your head and going to town with a metal spoon when you least expect it.  This trick is actually a cruel terror inducing traumatic experience for the little guys.

Better acting by a couple of those hamsters than in some Hollywood releases.

After reading some comments, maybe they weren't acting?

You'd use a real gun with hipsters.

I was going to say pretty much the same thing.

Hamsters are kinda like small cats.  They're cute, sometimes they're cuddly, sometimes they try to tear a chunk from you finger.  Most of them aren't all that interested in interacting with you unless you're going to give them something to eat.

Rats are kinda like small dogs.  They want to play with you, they're generally rather snuggly and happy for attention.  Many of them will try to groom you, which some people panic at and assume is them trying to bite...  A rat will curl up on your chest and take a nap while you're lying on the couch, watching TV.

Most of those responses are just what happens if you suddenly blow your breath on a hamster, they hate that a lot. Jerks.

This. But if you decide on a rat, be sure to get at least a pair of them, because they are very social creatures.

Oh, and rats seem to be able to experience empathy, which is more than I can say for a lot of people I know...

This. I love my rats so much. They are very much like small dogs in the way they interact. Mine look and reach for me everyday. One time i was gone for a few days in the hospital and the poor dears wouldnt stop squeaking/snuggling for like a week. Their such adoring critters that love thier owners. Hamsters suck.

It's true. My litttle nieces wanted hamsters because OMG SO CUUUUTE but the damned thing is the most pointless pet I've ever had. Sleeps 22 hours a day, is only awake when you're not, and doesn't give a damned about people unless you're offering food.
