Why does Lana del Ray always sound like she's taken so much xanax and zoloft that there's no life left in her?

I assume that's rhetorical.

Sleeping Beauty was not the epic childhood-defining adventure for any generation that Disney thinks it was.

What? Did the James Franco movie destroy The Wizard of Oz?

And Disney has about 50 spinoff Sleeping Beauty tales anyway, don't be dumb.

I miss my three year old girl. She's six now, and though I love her right up to the moon and back, she's no longer the adorable little Monster she once was.

I don't know but I love her voice. I prefer the remixes of her songs to the originals though. They put a little more "life" into them.

She's more machine, now, than man. Twisted and evil.

This is one of those movies I sort of want to see, but won't care that much if I miss it.

They universally suck. You are doing the opposite of making your case.

Yeah, that trailer doesn't make me want to take my daughters to see it. It looks more like a "go see with dudes after beers" movie. If I were in my 20's and childless.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw the battle of Pelenor Fields.  SB's dad even looks like Theoden.

If this trailer is any indication, it looks as though they've done an outstanding job with the story.

Personally, I can't wait to see it.

No Suby, "scary" is not the reason why you are trembling.

2014-01-27 11:50:33 AM
Sigh.

More generic video game CGI.

Why can't we get accurate, real world-like physics for apparently large objects instead of perfectly flowing mathematical forms? Everything looks like its underwater and flowing or made of infinitely flexible rubber. It all looks fake. It's not inviting, it's distracting. Every movie is starting to look alike.

2014-01-27 11:59:01 AM
Meh. Go and see Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty instead. Much more fun.

The Wizard of Oz movie pretty much destroyed The Wizard of Oz book. Trying to make a faithful adaptation of the book would flop at the box office now, assuming it could even get financed.

buntz: I didn't hear When You Wish Upon a Star at all?  Am I missing it?

Subby failed. "When You Wish Upon a Star" is Pinocchio. This is "Once Upon a Dream".

And it looks pretty damn good to me. Just because something started out as a children's fairy tale doesn't mean it has to stay at that level. In fact, I'd prefer an expanded story with modern effects, and deeper characters. We've seen so many titles from our collective childhoods with potential for being awesome fail completely (Transformers), it would be nice to see someone pull it off.

Jolie looks like she was born to play the part.

I liked this better when it was called Snow White and the Hunts... oh wait, that movie sucked too.

Considering just about all of fairy tales Disney movies were based off of were typically pretty damn tragic or dark in their original form, it's just coming back full circle...

Yeah, that.

Also, if I hadn't been told that was Angelina Jolie I never would have known.  She fits the visual perfectly, though, much to my surprise.

I've read Disney's Sleeping Beauty when I was a kid but never saw the movie. In fact I have never seen any of the Disney's animated movies.

Eh. Yet another sympathy-for-the-devil spin of a classic? Sure, why not. Sleeping Beauty is one of the weaker entries in the Disney catalog so it isn't like they're going to ruin anyone's childhood or anything.

And  cgi is getting kind of samey, but Sauron-ents and a turf dragon do look like cool witch henchmen. If for some strange reason you need your witch, whose claim to fame is making a whole kingdom sleep, to be battling small armies which are not asleep.

talkertopc: In fact I have never seen any of the Disney's animated movies.

What? She goes around making that stupid duck face all the time, that's the sort of quacky sounds you'd expect to come out of her. And compared to the normal off-key mumbling she normally bleats out, it's actually way more listenable.

Because it's incredibly goddamn hard.

Leaving aside the computational problems, I don't think we even have models* to describe accurately WTF is "real" physics.  Unless you want to simulate everything at the molecular level, and that's just computationally impossible.  So we can't describe what is going on, and even if we could, it'd send CGI budgets even higher.

* might be wrong

/I remember there was some Pixar movie where they were doing a big presentation about all the cool stuff they could do, and then they got to the bit with a shirt pull (Literally, pull the guy up by his shirt), and had a collective meltdown.
