Stoker: I sometimes wonder if the military actually runs the government and IL is their puppet. And they are weeding out his family for a coup (no one to take a seat at the throne). One day his most trusted Military Chief will walk up and put a bullet in his head and the country will be ruled by a group of dictators.

Just a thought.

Yes and No  I think Un and the military are engaged in a real life "Game of Thrones".  Un has the titular imperial power, and must appear to be in charge as Korean and Chinese emperors always must, even if they are in reality puppets of the palace staff.   The generals who ARE very powerful, do not trust each other enough to simply oust Un in a unified Coup to put one of their own on the throne, and so Un, who realizes this, is slowly eliminating anyone else who could serve as a creditable alternative power base for a significant faction to rally around.  He offed his Uncle, I believe in a large part because he had his eyes opened to just how powerful the uncle had become.

Recently he ordered a ministry controlled by his Uncle (a trade one that generated hard currency through exports IIRC) to give up a valuable fishing ground to the Army which had complained to un that without it , their soldiers would starve.

Wires must have gotten crossed about who exactly gave the order because when the Army arrived to take possession of the Port, forces loyal to Un's Uncle resisted-violently.  Worse yet, they basically completely routed the Army forces until massive reinforcements where brought up for a combined sea-air-land assault.  Un was a little shook to realize he didn't control the best trained soldiers in his own country and execution-a-palooza ensued

That was my thought. They were recalled and they WENT??

Although Un was probably holding their wives and children hostage inside NK. Evil bastard.

Democratic? hmm. You get caught conspiring against NK and they kill you and everyone you know. The NK people are poor, hungry, and powerless to fight back against a ruthless army. There is literally nothing they won't do to the people if there was an uprising. They also currently have the world's largest forced labor camp, it's a giant melange of human rights violations.

I mean don't care if you don't want to, but it's hard not to have empathy for a people that are suffering that kind of oppression.

Probably because they didn't receive the message directly.

The embassy's political officer (or whatever the NK equivalent is) probably got it, then took them into custody and bundled them on a plane.

I think the reason that we are so offended by this is that the equivalent act here in the U.S. would be killing off some Congressmen or CEOs along with their families and we know that only the poor grunts who we ship overseas are supposed to die. Which is why we only get national brouhaha when the school shootings happen at schools afflicted with affluenza.

on the road: For historical perspective, there was a similar incident in China during the Civil War.

Although the Japanese had invaded China and occupied a large area, Mao and Chiang Kai-shek were fighting each other.  Temporarily headquartered in Xian,  Chiang Kai-shek's generals wanted to establish a truce with the communists and join forces to fight the foreign invader, but their opinion was overruled.  The generals then basically held hostage Chiang and forced him to agree to a truce.

However, at least according to the tour guide, Chiang had at least some of the conspiring generals assassinated after the war along with their families.

And for even moar historical perspective (and probably more likely a source of inspiration for Kim Joffrey Un): the Nine Familial Exterminations, a very common way of pretty much executing not only the offender but every single motherfarker who might have any sort of connection to them when the offender managed to piss off the emperor personally.  Quite common historically not only in imperial China (which is where Chiang Kai-shek got the idea) but in Joseon-era imperial Korea (which is where it's likely Kim Joffrey Un got the idea, seeing as his whole family has had a serious hard-on for claiming to be the de factor successors to the House of Yi in all but name for the past three generations or so).

I highly doubt he thinks of himself as an immortal. It's not even likely that the Roman emperors ever believed that of themselves despite it being part of their styling. More likely, he simply doesn't care what happens to NK after his own death. That is a common dictator trait. Or, he may have a sense that the party is almost over and he is just trying to hang on as long as he can.

THIS. Thank you. I was trying to formulate a similar response but you did it better.

I'm so sick of this jingoism that we feel so good about because it elevates "the troops" but in reality that is all just to mask our awareness of the truth. We send working class people at working class wages (some of whose families require foodstamps and other aid) to kill and be killed for the agendas of wealthy, connected swine.

I have many relatives and friends who have served and who are proud of their service and I am proud of them but just when was the last time an American soldier or sailor really died defending our country or our way of life or our "freedom" rather than for some other reason?

LrdPhoenix: Saborlas: This is what happens when you raise someone to believe that he is literally a living God.

Not necessarily.  It happens just about anytime someone is handed near absolute authority.  There is a good reason that the US Constitution bans Bills of Attainder.  While the English Crown mostly used it to execute people and seize their property without much of a trial, it's basically that when someone is found guilty of a serious crime, they and their entire family can be declared tainted by the crime, and the family is punished too by having their property seized.  It's not that far of a logical leap from declaring an entire family tainted by a crime worthy enough to execute one of them to considering them all for execution.

Acquired Situational Narcissism.

Yeah, unless the U.S also wants to take the unquestioned lead and financial burden of re-stabilizing a country of 20+ million people, we have no right to do dick to NK, as much as you'd otherwise want to obliterate such an awful regime.

And, China's feelings I'm not as concerned about...SK on the other hand I'd defer to 100 times out of a 100 on this issue.

Wasn't he educated in Switzerland (and/or elsewhere in Europe)? He knows damn well he isn't God; he just knows enough people in his own country think he's a deity and he can pretend to act like one.

As others have mentioned, it wouldn't surprise me if the military is pulling many of the strings right now, either.
