I'm not sure this story is all that unusual other than the fact that, in Great Britain, 16-year-olds are expected to know what to do with their lives. I've known a few cooks and chefs. Most of them were smart, but that smart wasn't always the kind that worked in a formal education setting.

Good for him. There have been a good many people that wouldn't even have bothered trying to do anything. Now he can support his partner and his little girl and feel proud that he's doing it on his own.
