Kurt needs to get a move on.

12,000,000 meters at 4m/sec= only about 34 days of non-stop walking. Yet Kurt is 300 episodes in, and only about 1 million meters along.

Needs more FLOBathons.

dayz, dust, or state of decay emergent stories are far more interesting.

oh, and minecraft sucks.

/the depth of mincraft's sucking was laid bare by south park, and I don't think they even realized it.  Randy and Sharon's minecraft playing devolved into simple deathmatch, and they acted like they had never heard of anything so cool....  and deathmatch is as old as snake shiat.

So he's walked 0.6km/day in a game.  I think I walk that much between my desk and the coffee pot per day in real life.  I should turn that into a "fundraiser," all donations go to The Human Fund.

Minecraft's impact on the gaming community is much broader than just the gameplay of the vanilla version.

It's a simplified environment with well defined rules (like all games), and thus a nice place to relax from Real Life, which can get complicated.

However, as a 'sandbox game', it doesn't really have a long list of rules to follow, other than 'survive'. This makes it hard to 'get into' for people with no imagination and/or intelligence.

kids.  it is why there are minecraft plushies and posters and other bullshiat.

kids play minecraft.

because they don't know any better.

adults that try minecraft will move on to better examples or use the software in ways that have nothing whatever to do with the game (like building scale models of the Enterprise).

old people play bowling on the wii.

/firmly believe that most people that purchased a copy of minecraft never play more than an hour.

Wow, lots of hate.

I still play Minecraft, though sadly it won't run on my laptop any longer so I stick to it on xbox when I just want to relax and enjoy running around for a while.

It's like a video game version of Legos with and endless number of pieces.

i don't HATE the game really, and the "endless legos" part I definitely see the attraction to.

it is just that they actual GAME part of minecraft has been bettered.

it is time for minecraft to evolve.  make it photorealistic, give it decent physics and leave the lego crap behind.  people that want to play with that already have what they need.

the retro shiat that came into vogue is goddamn silly.

it really takes a certain type of personality to build shiat in a virtual environment with legos, and most people just aren't that type.

hell, most kids that grew up with legos and lincoln logs and erector sets never really built anything impressive with them.

why do you think most lego sets these days are little more than models?

No doubt. I'm pretty sick of "indie games" with their "retro graphics."

So you're in your 40s and you want a game to appeal to 40 year olds. Great.

Although Minecraft clearly has a larger fanbase than that. As a 40-something, I have no idea.

dude, I am almost 42.  I have pretty much lived thru the evolution of video games.

i have not went thru, what, six or seven console generations and untold Pc upgrades to play games that look like they should have been released on the genesis.  if I want to retro game, I will pull out an emulator and play some SNES stuff.  i simply refuse to give any more time or money to current retro game fads.

someone recommended project zomboid to me, as I like me some zombies.

i can't farking do it.  i tried.  i really did.  i just can't.  i picked up a couple of j-type rpg's on android, since I loved chrono trigger.  i can't play them.  i just keep thinking "this was fun back in 1995".

hell, i can't farking play the new shadowrun game because it is nothing more than an HD SNES game.

it is a free form game that lets you do pretty much what you want.  you can build.  you can farm.  you can do nothing but explore or walk around.  you kinda need to be really imaginative to get much enjoyment from the game, or be really OCD about building shiat with legos.

it is why kids farking LOVE it.  they tend to be really imaginative, since adult-hood has not yet raped all the imagination from them.

Exploring, gathering resources, basic crafting, survival, pvp, some pve, building.

Yes, that's the game.  If you enjoy that particular activity enough, then you'll get something out of Minecraft.  If not, well, then you won't.  I don't.

There is something called Creative Mode where you don't need to do any resource gathering or crafting. It is by far less popular than the mode you dislike though.

And here is the crux of the thing, why does everyone get so offended when they don't like something? Like it's some great affront of them as a human being that game designer X didn't make a game they enjoyed.

Yeah, my kid plays in that mode on the iPad and I've built some buildings for fun (which he promptly ruins with lava), it's more limited than on a console or PC I'd wager but it was kind of neat.  At the end of the day, it's just not my type of game and I just can't seem to overlook the crappy graphics like most can.

Yes.  Or not.  You can also build circuits, and machines, and whatever-the-hell-you-want, really.  But if you don't have a spark of creativity then no, it probably won't appeal to you.

I get the building part, and the imagination, but I don't get the mods or how the survival elements are fun. There are better, prettier games out there with more depth, yet minecraft persists. The only reasons I can think of are price and familiarity; people know the controls so they can pick up different mods quickly, and it's cheaper than buying a new game.

Play creative mode instead of survival.

I think it's really best when you're collaborating with a group of cool people. One of the servers I used to play on was anything goes outside the vicinity of the spawn. However, the spawn city had a couple design principles imposed by the admins. From there people organically designed and iterated buildings. It quickly became an amazing looking and real feeling city.  It's great because you start in a lively looking town and make your base there and then go off exploring, starting a new town if you like. Or just adventure and return with your loot periodically.

(That said, you need mods to really have the capability to repel griefers. Whitelist that shiat and only play with people you trust not to be assholes who will set fire to everything.)

I don't play it as much as I used to but even a local server to play with a couple friends will add a lot to the experience.

Yeah, crab66suggested that also, and I've played a little of that on the iPad which, I know, is much different (read: limited) than on PC.  And what you explain sounds pretty cool.  I don't know that I can explain entirely why playing the game for more than 15 minutes makes me want to stop playing it.  I have always been more of a gameplay over graphics type but I guess with Minecraft I'm a hypocrite and haven't had any experiences with it that have allowed me to get over my hypocrisy (I haven't given it much of a chance as it costs money to buy).  It's all good, though, there are a lot of other games I like.
