Oh HELL no

2014-01-26 08:29:31 PM
Yeah, no.  Not for the heights mind you, but because I wouldn't trust (a) a gust of wind from coming along and farking me the fark up, and (b) the masonry in some random Russian smokestack

\CSB: just before the mill my dad worked at got put on the NRHP, they had knocked down the smokestack, as it wasn't original to the property.  I don't know where the rest went, but I know that 2000+ of the bricks from it make up the walkways around my house.

Two things.

1. I was waiting for the flood of miniature spiders to come rushing out and attacking those people.

2. That right there is an Escher-esque flight of stairs.

Nope.

The loose-looking bricks make it a double nope.

I suffered neither the heebees or the jeebees watching that.

I think there may be something wrong with me.

But then I noticed how high the "well" was.

Well I sure did, due to my fear of widths.

I've never looked at acrophobia as something that necessarily needs to be treated. It's a pretty rational fear.

Yeah, factory chimneys tend to be a little higher than a well.  If that was a well, it was built in Poland.

Falling in. Around the outside, it looks like there's a ledge or catwalk about 20 feet down that you'd (probably) land on. The inside most likely goes all the way to the bottom.

It's not that they're crazy, they just have absolutely no regard for health or safety, for either themselves or others.

I started off thinking "Oh, that's not so bad -- it's enclosed." Little did I know. Dang. I stuck it out to the end, but about lost it when at around 6:50 he goes "Okay, this is the tricky part." Yeah, the rest of it, piece of cake, right? And for all that, I wonder if the trip back down wouldn't be harder.

I don't get that. Strap a cable to their safety harness, put a pulley at the top and a winch at the climbing base and they could do that more quickly, easily and safely. Especially getting down in the event of, as they mentioned, a possible lightning storm with wet footings in the rain.

While the video is pretty excellent, the climb doesn't seem to be too bad. Someone with more knowledge than me should chime in, but I'd wager it's a 5.8 or 5.9 at worst.

I was okay through most of that, up until he had to climb on top of the damn thing. Eff that. Eff that in arse with a flaming cactus. I would pass out and plummet to my death.

For some reason, heights don't bother me UNTIL I see something that indicates "the top" of whatever I'm climbing. Trees, ladders, scaffolds - I'm like a monkey going up them. Once I see the roof or the rafters or even my piss-ant little 8 foot high ceiling within reach, everything just kinda locks up and my brain starts in with the "Oh SH..."

Same here, especially for the video of them climbing the 1600'+ radio tower. I think it's a self preservation mechanism.
