Having a higher minimum wage means fewer people on public assistance. How is that not Republican?

/sadly, I know how...

How about we raise the minimum wage and penalize companies who outsource their labor to other countries with massive taxes so they'll be forced to hire American workers and operate domestically or at least get taxed so farking hard that it helps the deficit.

because, well, you see, those companies are lobbying to write the rules, and everything else we hear about is just their chewbacca defense.

Sorry, but I have been assured that increasing the minimum wage even $0.01 will drive every company out of business, turn everybody not already making a least 6-figures into lazy moochers, and send the Earth spiraling into the Sun.  Do we really want to risk all of that?

Well liberals are dumb if they think Chewbacca lives on Kashyyyk when it was clear he lives with ewoks on Endor.

You mean more people being able to take responsibility for themselves instead of relying of government subsidies? Sounds like commie/socialist/fascist class warfare.

We used to called those "trade tariffs". Apparently abolishing them is "free trade" and better for everyone because you can now buy 3 t-shirts for $10 at Wal-Mart. You know, the dollars you aren't making any more, they go further.

To most Republicans (thank G-d not all from what I see), they want the Gilded Age back. With no minimum wage for employees and no social safety net. Except this time there will be no company buildings or company store, instead you're expected to be "on call" while living in a studio apartment with 10 other people like the Mexicans do. Then after a few more tax cuts, the most wealthiest may allow a small increase to your wage, as long as you don't talk back to your boss.

2014-01-26 05:03:38 PM
I've wanted to see what happens when you allow companies to deduct twice the wages for any job over $25k / under $60k. That would encourage the companies to bring more people up to the lower middle classes.

If minimum wage kept pace with worker productivity since the 60's...... Then minimum wage today would be $21.72 hr.

8"When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.'
9"The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius.
10So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.
11When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.
12'These who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said, 'and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.'
13"But he answered one of them, 'I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius?
14Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.
15Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?'
16"So the last will be first, and the first will be last."

Republican Jesus

Because money for welfare assistance comes out of the middle class's paychecks.  Money for higher minimum wages comes out of the 1%'s paychecks (or so they think).

Obama can unilaterally raise the minimum wage for federal employees by executive order. $25/hr. Bam! I want to see what happens when employers can no longer attract applicants because they're offering wages which are half those offered by the feds.

Well Bush gave tax cuts to companies that outsourced for some reason and I know it bit a lot of software companies who only look at this quarter's earnings in the ass when they found out that the people they outsourced to can't code.

Yeah, but the redistribution has the taxpayers in Portland and Eugene subsidizing the red part of the state east of the Cascades, so it's the good type of socialism.

Time to start doing what large businesses are refusing to do.

Also a reason I won't be working there past March.

Hire American Workers who balk at the idea of doing mindless work.

When the big infrastructure push of the National Park Service was done, folks needed work, learned a new trade, and lived in terrible conditions - but they got the job done, had new skills, and presumably had a better life because of it.

Nowadays?  Even with a crumbling rail and highway infrastructure, people wouldn't do that.

FTFA: Richardson, who has appeared to be the front-runner for the Republican nomination to oppose Kitzhaber, said the Democratic governor has been more concerned with trying to get more people signed up for food stamps and health insurance than on growing the economy.

That stupid governor!

Making sure hungry people get fed and sick people get access to health insurance when he could be piling up dollar bills?!

Yeah, you go with that.

And this is the GOP front runner to try to challenge Kitzhaber?

Not the "15 dollar an hour minimum wage/let's decrease wealth inequality" guy?

My surprised face, let me show it to you.   -_-

A'ight. I'll bite. What is your plan for Oregon, Mr GOP Front runner?

"As governor I'm not going to be trying to sign more people onto more federal programs," said Richardson, a lawyer from Central Point. "I'm going to be trying to get people to be more self-reliant."

Ah, bootstraps.

And automated McDonalds maintain themselves, I presume? We have self-repairing, self-fueling, self-stocking machines now?

If McDonalds, Wal-Mart and co. won't pay their workers a living wage, the government should step in. Otherwise, we're essentially subsidizing their massive profits when those workers are forced to take government assistance.

Alternatively, minimum wage workers are forced to take a second job, which means that someone ELSE has a harder time finding a job, which means unemployment numbers suffer.

The right way to handle this would be to have the Federal Reserve Bank announce an arbitrary minimum daily minimum wage based on their best judgement, much like the prime interest rate.

cchris_39: Why $15?

Because most employers can't afford a $100,000/yr minimum wage, but most employers and their customers can afford a $15/hr minimum wage.

As fast-food workers strike and protest in seven cities across the country this week for higher pay, one estimate suggests that raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 an hour could increase the cost of a Big Mac by 68 cents.

ReverendJynxed: I can't wait to pay ten bucks for a piece of bread!

If a company must be federally forced into paying its workers a living wage, and responds to that problem by rolling that onto the consumer, the problem is with the company. Not the worker. Not the consumer. Not the government. The company.

Why is it wrong to make businesses pay their workers a survivable wage, but it's okay to make the average American subsidize their offshoring of our jobs?

Well, there's a "maybe" and a "to a point" in there somewhere.  You also need to ramp minimum wage gradually or you'll end up screwing people over with an abrupt change.

But yeah, overall that's the idea and it seems to hold up reasonably well historically.  Especially if you're basing it off of acceptable standard of living and existing predominant working conditions and legal definitions of poverty.  Basically "any job should pay well enough to avoid poverty" has been shown definitively to be a reasonable and achievable goal.
