What a waste of money. Talk about bad Koch.

No one should have that much influence.  They are the best reason I have seen for a progressive estate tax.  That much money just gives them far too much power, and it's incompatible with the common welfare.

I think it's nice to see groups spend that much money to get their message out for simple love of country and their ideals, and not expect to get anything at all in return.

So much irony in a couple of billionaires who talk so much about "personal freedom", yet use their bottomless bank accounts to push around and oppress others.

I really don't think that their game is to get anyone elected, per se.  If that happens, great, but for them I think it's more about poisoning the political climate and trying to make it far more difficult for certain political ideas and positions to gain traction.  So even if a politician they target wins, they still have to move to the right and prove they are a Job Creator to win.  And thus they have become far less of a threat.

Howard Hughes, naked, shooting codeine and receiving tranfusions of the blood of virgin mormon princesses sat in his blacked out suite at the Desert Inn, in Vegas.  Though he was never able to force the end of nuclear weapon testing ( he DID always received a polite hearing from both LBJ & RMN), he pretty much got his TWA stash walled off from the tax man (remember that when you see the ads/hype re: Howard Hughes Medical Institute).

He funneled 400K to Nixon over the years.  Hughes, looking for tax relief, hired Larry O'Brien (head of the DNC & later NBA commissioner) on a $5000 a week retainer to get the relief Hughes desired (tax code just for Hughes - causing one House Rep to observe "So, Mr. Hughes wants to pay Mr. Hughes to pay Mr. Hughes).  O'Brien's DNC HQ was in the Watergate...  Nixon is a synonym for paranoia (doesn't mean they're not after you).  Money as Speech?  In politics?  Who is `talking'?

Public Only Financing of all campaigns/elections
Absolute transparency of all lobbying
Sidestep either - mandatory minimum in Club Fed
Constitutional amendment covering both is probably the only fix that will end this `cash conversation'  `wink & nod will remain - but it won't be followed by the arrival of a bagman the following week without some deep thought

You're talking about the early 1990's, right? Don't you think there's a slight relevance gap in this topic?

Listen, maybe it's time Americans on all sides of the political spectrum to start demanding for electoral reform that takes the influence away from lobbyists and billionaires and returns it to the voter.

I'd be curious how the total amounts of money spent by the Chinese capitalists on recent Dem campaigns compares to the total amount of money spent by the capitalist Koch's on recent GOP campaigns.

Or are you just going with "Both sides are bad, so vote Republican" because the best rejoinder you have for the Koch's is three presidents and two decades ago?

And clearly, all that Chinese money given to Clinton influenced his policies and clearly destroyed the US economy in the 90s.

See how silly your talking points sound to the intelligent?  Stick with trying to win over the poorly educated stupid old Hayseed white males that comprise the ever-shrinking base of the GOP because nobody else buys your nonsense.

Clinton did sign NAFTA, make China a permanent most favored nation and repealed restrictions and regulations on banking. He did actually ruin our economy.

Yes, he did signed off on NAFTA, MFN for China, and on the liberalization of the banking industry. I fail to recall the deep GOP opposition to those.

The Presidency, and even to an extent the Congress, is irrelevant.  If they can sweep governorships, state legislatures and local elections like they did in 2010, they can wreck havoc.  With the gutting of unions and Citizen's United, there are just too many fronts for the Dems to fight.  This is going to be John Roberts legacy.

Yeah they're in no danger of anything like that. As long as they control the institutions that are the fountain of their wealth/power they'll continue buying politicians until the next generation takes over.

The economy boomed during Clinton and for a solid period afterwards.  You can claim, and I'd agree, that some of the policies that he implemented led to the crash of '08 and many of our current economic and unemployment woes, but they worked well for a good while.  It was the Bush administration and the completely lack of oversight that allowed the banks to abuse the rule changes Clinton had established to really fark things up.

If you want to make billions polluting the environment, it's going to cost you millions. But it's worth it and if you don't do it, someone else will. Have to think of your children's children's children and have enough money to secure their future. I mean, the world's going to be a hell hole by then and they'll need the money for a comfortable lifestyle.
