We survived Reagan. We'll, technically we're still surviving Reagan, sort of.

hardinparamedic: Condi?

She's:

A) Black.
B) A black woman.
C) A moderate that isn't a member of the tea party. (RINO!)
D) Affiliated with the Bush Administration

Snowballs chance in hell.

E) An unmarried Republican woman with a female "roommate."

A few push-polls and whisper campaigns in the primaries, and she's toast among social conservatives.

As a lifelong independent, there is nothing the Republicans can do to convince me that they have America's best interest at heart and as a consequence no way to earn my vote.

My votes will go for the Democratic party candidates. While definitely a flawed party, at least they're trying to do some good and not just trying to fark everyone over who isn't a Democrat. Also is not a 3rd party that has a better chance to keep the Republicans out of office than the Democrats so none of my national/state level votes will go toward 3rd party candidates either. 3rd party candidates might earn votes for me on a local level. Republicans still have no chance to earn my vote even on the local level.

Maybe, but unlikely for several reasons. For one, a Republican with a moderate degree of charisma is a relative term. They'll still have odious beliefs that they don't realize how horrible they sound outside of the echo chamber. Think Mitt Romney's 47% comment or Huckabee's recent shiatty comments about women.

Then even assuming they somehow dredge up a candidate from the murky depths who is smart enough to parrot their amoral agenda without word-vomiting all over their own campaign you still have ALL THE OTHER REPUBLICANS. Someone is going to start talking about rape, or that minorities are lazy, or that poor people are all just irresponsible and deserve to be poor - you know, core GOP beliefs - and they'll ruin it for them anyway.

Not to say that I think everyone should just rest on their laurels and expect to win against them by doing nothing, au contraire. But with the demographic deathtrap the GOP has cornered themselves in to combined with their ever shiattier looking platform, high population of racists and vitriolic pundit industry they're going to have an extremely steep uphill battle for the foreseeable future. When farking TEXAS is slowly but surely turning purple you know they have a problem.

Oh, that's right I forgot. Republicans are f'ing liars who never keep their promises.

Pretty much sums up my attitude too, and I was a registered republican for 20+ years. I finally registered as an independent in late 2012, and I won't be voting for a republican for a long, long, long goddamn time.

Did you even read my post? I do remember it, it's just that the odds against it are greater every year. Sure, there's going to be an outlier here and there, but on the whole the GOP is facing an uphill battle and they're increasingly digging in and ensuring that they do not shift the odds in their favor. That doesn't mean that everyone else should rest on their laurels, on the contrary it means that NOW is the time when you put in maximum effort as now - and going forward - is when you can bury them for good.

Make their losses more devastating, and make them even more increasingly desperate... They'll make even more mistakes and dig their own graves even faster.

the Tea Party ... cropped up in 2009 in response to the initial overreaches of the administration of Barack Obama.

What? No. Fox News cropped it up in response to a black Democrat getting elected president.

Initial overreaches. Like what, exactly? Giving morons equal time is not the same as being unbiased.

Dr. Rice is the obvious choice for 2016, especially if the Democrats run Hillary. They desperately need a candidate who is intelligent, charismatic, moderate, knowledgeable in foreign policy, well-known, highly respected, and can take both California and the South. She's a Presbyterian minister's daughter, came from Alabama and is a professor at Stanford. Any rumors about her private life will make little difference. Her "pro-choice" stand is carefully modulated. Even liberals will trust her not to do something stupid.

Let's face it, Condi's the best choice they have, and they know it. She's not a xenophobe, she's not a Christian zealot, she's not an imperialist. When Bush said he was going to attack Iran--yes, Iran--she threatened to resign unless he got Congress's approval. She stopped him from sending troops into Africa. She can split the women's vote and at least some of the black vote. I take it the African-American community is not swooning over Hillary. The single hardest thing the GOP has in this regard is talking her into running. At this point, they should be prepared to beg her. Frankly, she is so far above the others, it is difficult for me to decide who is worthy of being her VP candidate for the ticket.

Also, FFS - one of these things is not at all like the others. While Condi isn't my first choice for anything, she could be put in charge of something important without my waking up in a cold sweat thinking about it.
She is, at least, a vaguely responsible human being of at least slightly above average intelligence.
And those two things alone put her in a different dimension than those other two assholes.

That "I'll only talk with you for one hour and basically filibuster the whole time" crap she pulled during the 911 hearings basically put her off of my list.

While Bush had the character to convincingly sell the idea of "knowing nuthin'" about the impending 9/11 attack, Condi was given every urgent memo relating to the plans of al Quaida, with specifics like "training at flight schools" "teams now in the country" and "airliner hijackings for suicide missions" along with mentions of the WTC as a target.

She knows she farked up and is just smart enough to know that she should leave it be.

Spoken like folks who don't remember the Brown/Coakley fiasco.

Remember that these days, a statistically significant number of voters are not merely stupid, but blindly, willfully, and incandescently so. Furthermore, while both sides are willing and able to capitalize on the mistakes of the other side, we have one side in particular that's demonstrated a willingness and some small talent at  manufacturing gaffes and pinning them on their opposition. The targets lose points in the polls for doing dumb things they should have known better than doing, even if they did know better and didn't do them.

Yes, it amounts to winning through cheating, but in certain peoples' books, all's fair in love and war. And it's a  kind of winning, and that's all that matters.

Like republicans are ever going to win a national election again no matter who the dems run. Not enough old white people left.

After all the antibrown folk derp and pro-rape antihomogay of the last decade they are boned outside the rural hardcore derp areas. And their jerrymandering doesn't help during a presidential election
