The message

It is with a very sad heart that I must confirm my husband, Justin Carmical, sometimes known as the Jew Wario died on Thursday, January 23rd.
I also have to confirm he shot himself, but he was not alone, he locked himself in the bathroom and I was on the other side of the door talking with him. He knew I loved him, HE KNEW ALL OF YOU LOVED HIM. You all made him so happy, every time he was recognized from his videos, it made him giddy with joy.

His last recording was a song with Johnathan Mann, I don't know if Johnathan knows. He recorded it the night before.
I am surrounded by family and friends, and am taking this one moment at a time, remembering to breathe. I want to share with you what the Chaplain said to me, it was a momentary mistake, hold on to the good memories. I will post an update once a decision has been made about funeral arrangements.
If I need anything I will let you know, just hold on to each other and love each other, and thank you all so much for loving him so much.

OMG! Not Jew Wario! The way he played video games... it was... Legendary!! He'd just play them all up, man. He was my hero; all I ever wanted to do was play video games as well as he did. He was like the Pinball Wizard of Nintendo - how do you think he did it? I don't know! What made him so good???

Sure, there were moments of melancholy - around the announcements of the Nobel Peace Prize and the Pulitzer every year, he'd get this look in his eye. "Perigee," he'd say, looking off in the distance at the setting sun, "Do you sometimes think there's something more to life than playing video games? I mean, I'm 43, and here I am wearing a stupid hat and acting like the ultimate 13-year old..."

"Sometimes I feel like I missed the starting bell, you know? This is as good as I get. 43 years old... shiat. Sitting here on my couch eating candy in front of a webcam... Oh, to live on... Sugar Mountain... With the barkers and the colored balloons..."

And now he's gone. And some poor, cursed, meaningless manchild will step in to fill the vacuum, and we will watch the next Peter Pan age and fade until that faithful day when the face that stares back from the editing console awakens him to the truth. You can't be twenty on Sugar Mountain...

Honestly, I disagree. It's my life, I should have the right, if I so desire, to self-terminate.  The most famous example is Hunter S. Thompson.

Now, if it's due to (as it is with 99.9% of cases) depression, then yes, it's tragic because the person should have had help and/or medication as needed. The tragedy is that the person fell through the system, not that they killed themselves.

It's certainly unjustifiably selfish to do this while your wife pleads with you from the other side of a door.

Personally, I'm single, not a ton of friends, whenever my parents pass on, there may come a day when I'm just through living. Decided I've done everything I care to do, so just punch out. I like having the freedom of choice in the matter, and frankly, the absolute last thing I really want to do in life is grow to be 80 or 90.  I'm not remotely suicidal and I'm not planning it, so get off my ass.

For the rest of you mocking a person who obviously had some serious, untreated problems: have fun. I've lost all patience for suicidal people; there's enough tragedy in the world without having to add unto it.

Here's to hoping he's in better place *eep* , but still, fark suicide.

If anyone is feeling suicidal. please keep in mind that-believe it or not-other people are suffering, and with some going through the exact same issues because we're all not that different, though we try our best.

The truth is, many people who kill themselves do so for reasons far less than many who choose to live on.

How about this: Instead of offing yourself, you get a hobby, or do some volunteering? There are so many things to do in the world and since we're all going to die anyway, we may as well ride this thing until we're kicked off.

Yeah, I think if you're married or have kids depending on you then offing yourself is selfish. Otherwise though it's personal choice. And the aspect of doing it with someone in the same house with you is more of a dick move than outright selfish. The considerate thing to do is to leave a note on a hotel bathroom door to call the authorities, no one wants to see that shiat, especially those not accustomed to it.

I really don't understand the thought that suicide is selfish. Do some people do it for selfish reasons? Sure, but most are in so much emotional pain that it is unbearable and for most people, unthinkable.

What I don't get is the complete lack of logic in the idea that all who do it are selfish. It is very similar to the thought process that people on welfare are lazy or gaming the system. The fact is the majority on welfare really need it, and we have to accept the relatively small percent that do game the system to help the masses.

I hate to bring politics in a thread like this, but its just the example that popped into my head. Due to the psychological makeup of what makes one conservative or liberal, the reaction to welfare makes some sense, despite the conclusions being illogical. However, the reaction to suicide is near universally thought as "selfish" or the like.  I can only assume the taboo is far too great in our society that it overrides critical thought. So take a step back people, imagine being in such emotional pain that blowing your brains out while your wife is on the other end of a door seems like a good idea, if that type of pain is even something you CAN imagine. Don't be quick to judge.

I read everything you had to say, and I will grant you that it makes some sense, though I do feel the political undertone to be dubious, while not malicious of course.

Ummm OK, look at it this way: If this guy's friend Noah hadn't made some zany, clever, and hilarious videos, maybe *I* would have succumbed to making the greatest mistake of all too. Who can say?

Do you know me?  Do you know what I have had to overcome physically and emotionally?  I will tell you this, I've gained enough wisdom to know that I am not special. If everyone that went through SHEER HELL offed themselves, we'd never get any work done for all the bodies clogging the streets.

i don't think anybody believes depression/pain/cancer/whatever it is that leads to suicide is selfish at all... if anything it's the complete opposite - that person needs help because they can't help themselves anymore... but the act of suicide is completely selfish

Never heard of him. Though, I am conflicted with the way this thread is going. Sure, I think he was a selfish dick for offing himself while his wife was on the other side of the door but while the context on how he killed himself is worse I'm not sure how he's worse than anyone else who offed themselves and yet has people who care about them. That includes Aaron Swartz. Yet somehow this guy is an asshole, while Aaron was troubled and driven to his death by the US government. If anything they're all selfish dicks, but should be remembered for who they were in the best of times not the worst.

Nemo's Brother: Still a selfish asshole to do it with his wife at home.

Yes, because its so much better when your family/wife/girlfriend etc just discovers you dead. Surprise! Suicide is always, always selfish.

I met him once or twice at E3. Seemed like a nice guy. I didn't watch a lot of his things, but what I did watch I liked.

This isn't something as simple as an "attention whore" deciding to off himself. Mental illness can happen in unpredictable and troubling ways. There might be absolutely no cause for it, but someone could plummet into a depressive spiral quickly and catastrophically.

I feel the need to point this out not because I'm pro-gun control, because I'm generally not, but... if they didn't have a gun in the house, he might still be alive now. Guns aren't simply a way of killing yourself. They are an immediate and instant way of killing yourself. They're possibly the most immediate and instant way of killing yourself. When you're dealing with significant mood swings and deep bouts of depression, a few minutes or a few hours can make the difference between making that choice and not making that choice.

You don't know what sort of demons people have screaming in their own heads. It is a tragedy, and not one that could have necessarily been prevented in any simple and long-term way, but it is still a tragedy. It's not some nerd being an attention whore, and it's not a loved one making the conscious decision to do something incredibly traumatizing and horrible to his loved ones. It's pain, or despair, or hopelessness we can't understand that brought someone so low that he used what was available to react to it. And that is a tragedy.
