They tried to fight fire with fire.  Sadly, I doubt they can escape the creeping death as they are trapped under ice :(

Maybe the ice put them into suspended animation?

They aren't dead til they're warm and dead. Maybe the ice will help.

No word on who started the fire. All I know is we didn't start it.

Perhaps to pass the time they could sing a song of ice and fire?

These rescuers need to use a little more care.   They buried grandma in ice and this poor Chinese girl in firetruck tire.

Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Wow, CNN's comments are more civil and mature than Fark's. Not sure I've ever seen that happen before. Good work guys.

As a firefighter, I can only imagine the horrendous things that all of the first responders witnessed at that scene.

Not being able to save someone is probably single-handedly one of the worst things in the world...and in this case, it's multiplied by approximately 30.

Absolutely terrible.

So typical of old people, first they're too hot, now they're too cold.  And quit dicking around with the thermostat, dammit!

I sense the plot for a new SyFy channel series:

They were presumed dead, but then we thawed them out....

Âgées zombies glace français

2014-01-26 10:49:52 AM
So they either burned to death or froze to death, but on average they are just fine.

I was going to make a joke about the savings on cremation services, but after reading the story, it's just too horrific sounding even for me.

It'll never happen, but sometimes I wonder if our emergency responders should be equipped with tranquilizer guns or something like that.  If you see someone that you can't save and that you know may be in for a particularly brutal death, why not shoot them with some tranqs so they can sleep through it peacefully?  Then you could reasonably tell everybody that granny died in her sleep and leave out the horrific burning or freezing to death part.

Not a good choice, assuming they're trying to live.

That doesn't sound too practical. If the people are hopelessly trapped, you would be putting the firefighters in grave danger by making them get close enough to get a good shot with the tranquilizer gun.  The safer way to do it, is to employ a tranquilizer mortar, and then, the firefighters could stand off and lob round after round of tranquilizer bombs into the area where the trapped people are.  Instead of shrapnel, the bombs could explode and fire tranquilizer darts in all directions.  The victims would be in lala land and the firefighters would be safe, a win/win if I ever saw one.  You know, sometimes I wonder if I really am a genius, and then, something like this arises, and I know it's a fact.

OTOH, the victims were very old. So that's better than lighting a barrel full of diesel fuel on fire and then chucking babies in one-by-one.

Off the topic of this sad and tragic event, one thing about this unusually frigid winter, I have an epic beard going. I usually stop shaving about the time the temps go from fall to winter during deer season then shave after its over, we've been in like single digit temps since deer season is over so I've got my beard Ive been growing since like thanksgiving.

Hey we finally found a real use for those Deadliest Catch guys.  They have plenty of expertise in breaking ice.

Or at least take a hint and get in there with some sledge hammers and axes.  Get enough guys, it will take little time.  You'll just need to keep them a little spaced apart for safety.
