no, it's this.

that level is really not that hard.  Maybe its because for a while I only played that game, and with no saving mechanic I had to play it often.  But its not like the level layout is random and the controls are tight enough that its really not that hard to dodge the seaweed.  I think the difficulty of this level is more urban legend at this point.

TheOriginalEd: clyph: Lsherm: it looks insanely complicated for an 8 bit game.

A lot of 8 bit games had complex gameplay, in-depth storylines, etc.  They had to engage your imagination because the technology didn't allow for eye candy.

The trend over the past decade has been towards better graphics and dumbed-down gameplay.

Some games you don't even have to "play" anymore:

I had trouble beating the Technodrome since only Don is worth a damn, but that level was never that hard.

I don't play games that become hard work. World of warcraft is a fine example.

No mention of Cat Mario??

Impossible AND hilarious!

Rising_Zan_Samurai_Gunman: If you're looking for modern games with similar gameplay concepts, check out SpaceChem (also on Steam), or there are a lot of Flash games with the same idea, like The Codex of Alchemical Engineering

Both by the same designer.

Along with KOHCTPUKTOP. Which takes this robot game one step further and makes you build your own logic gates out of metal and silicon.

A lot of them had shiatty gameplay and fark you mechanics for finding stuff, especially in the pre-internet walkthrough era.

Why would you crouch down for 30 seconds at the end of a path in Castlevania II? fark you, that's why. Why is the medusa shield hidden on a random island you have to dig on out of 3 planets in phantasy star? because we hate you.

The real difficulty, like many nintendo games, is that if you fail once after 3 hours of play, you might as well turn it off. The dam stage wasn't that bad, Stocking up on 99 scrolls for all four turtles, though, took a long time. Once Donatello was down, you it was a slow death as raphael and michelangelo were cruel jokes.

Sega Master system Shinobi was like gradius in the way you powered up. If you died late in the game, you had no power ups and might as well reset rather than watch your suddenly unpowered player walk like an ant into a blender for your remaining 30 lives.

That totally sounds like fun. Logic puzzles? Hooo boy that sounds like a freaking party. Can I play in my basement by myself with minimal lighting and microwave food as my only sustenance? I'll be so hardcore then I'll be able to start a video game blog.

Harder game than any one listed here:

import random
value = random.randrange(1000000000)+1
guess = int(raw_input("Guess a number: "))
if guess == value:
    print "Correct, you win!"
else:
    print "Wrong, you lose."

thatguyoverthere70: Yo, Robot Odyssey, I'm really happy for you, I'mma let you finish, but "Carnage Heart" was the hardest game OF ALL TIME.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnage_Heart

Truth is, is that the later (and far more difficult) Carnage Heart games never made it to the US. I had not played Robot Odyssey, but to me, Carnage Heart seems to be the far more rewarding concept, because it mixed combat with logical flowcharts. I guess it's a male thing.

But yeah, Carnage Heart was awesome. And the DS Carnage Heart games are screaming for fanslations. Seriously.

I beat DL, but for the life of me I can't even get past the opening sequence in DLII

Space Ace required too much muscle memory.

This is true, but remember, there will always, ALWAYS be that niche segment of gamers that will play games simply because they are difficult--Not in the Angry Video Game Nerd way (Where the controls and level design is so poor as to make the game difficult), but in the "Gee, I actually beat this freakin' game".

gwowen: aharown: Subby is clearly an idiot if (s)he believes that being a computer programmer in ANY WAY correlates to being a good gamer, as the idiotic submission implies.

Unless, of course, the game is a puzzle game based around generating solutions to problems by arranging boolean logic gates in an increasingly complex series of patterns to command robots to perform difficult automated tasks.  Then, being a computer programmer might be totally relevant.

You know if, hypothetically, that's what the game under discussion was about.

/ RTFA, dumbass

You're the dumbass.  Go back and read subby's post.  The side comment about being a computer programmer is independent of the game.  The implication of the clause is that, GENERICALLY, being a computer programmer is statistically correlated with gaming skill.

I evaluated the clause on its own merits because it stood apart from any specific link to the game.  READ THE farkING SUBMISSION, DUMBASS.

That's hilarious. I played Robot Odyssey at my buddy's house. I was solving some of those problems when my friends couldn't. And yes I did become an engineer. :)

That looks interesting; I wonder how I will fare with it after having taken the introductory digital logic/chip fab course.

Let's see I'll have time to play video games in... 5 months. Sigh.

Shouldn't the hardest game to play be life, technically?
// no one has ever won, and the high score is in the lowest range of 3 digits..

The game got Wallace an audience with the top brass at Apple and a presentation at Xerox PARC, and he went on to design electronic toys including the Nintendo Power Glove

Now it all makes sense!

Evidently an odious amount of tedium is the bar for what makes games difficult.
