I played Rocky's Boots. Does that make me old? Teaching digital logic to children is a diabolical concept.

Also, I think many of these games were made in Wisconsin of all places.

Heh. That was hysterical (for about 2 minutes).

FTA: Here's a rough estimate of their difficulty:

The Sewer: Moderate
The Subway: Challenging
The Town: Very Difficult
The Master Control Center: Impossible

If the author says a level is impossible, what's the impetus to bother with it?

Yeah, we're talking 13 years to BEAT the game, not create it.

I think the hardest game would be Dark Souls if made into a rouge-like game, and hell throw in some genetic defects after every death like Rogue Legacy has, like the one where you view the whole world upside down, or can't stop farting.

If you want real games though this has them all beat.
thumbs2.ebaystatic.com

Though its only hard if the game was in good condition otherwise its impossible from all the damn glitches. I think the real game was finding a copy that didn't mess up on you.

A lot of 8 bit games had complex gameplay, in-depth storylines, etc.  They had to engage your imagination because the technology didn't allow for eye candy.

fta: That, after all, is the very stuff of computer programming, using primitive operations in immensely complex architectures. For Foote, the fundamental appeal of the game is much the same as the fundamental appeal of mathematics and computer science: "The world is logical, and operates under simple rules. From such simplicity can come great complexity."

This can be applied to life, also. Very basic molecules obeying biochemical logic. Scale up, and emergent properties happen. Amino acids, peptides, proteins, ribosomes, nucleic acid, cells.....

Wallace was kept so busy with the plumbing of the game that he himself never played it through to completion. I asked him if he might try someday, and he said, "It might take a year of my life." He wasn't sure that anyone at the Learning Company had solved the entire game singlehandedly!

Yeah. I'm not playing that game then.

I don't think the 8080 ever made it that far.  Maybe 8 Mhz, in Turbo mode...  I'm not even sure the 8086 made it to 16 Mhz.  Been way too long.

Curiosity got the better of me and I went to Wiki.  The 8080 topped out at TWO whole Megaherz, the 8086 ran from 5-10 Mhz.  We didn't get to 16Mhz speeds until the 80286 (6-25 Mhz).  Those were the days.

that level is really not that hard.  Maybe its because for a while I only played that game, and with no saving mechanic I had to play it often.  But its not like the level layout is random and the controls are tight enough that its really not that hard to dodge the seaweed.  I think the difficulty of this level is more urban legend at this point.

The real difficulty, like many nintendo games, is that if you fail once after 3 hours of play, you might as well turn it off. The dam stage wasn't that bad, Stocking up on 99 scrolls for all four turtles, though, took a long time. Once Donatello was down, you it was a slow death as raphael and michelangelo were cruel jokes.

Sega Master system Shinobi was like gradius in the way you powered up. If you died late in the game, you had no power ups and might as well reset rather than watch your suddenly unpowered player walk like an ant into a blender for your remaining 30 lives.

This is true, but remember, there will always, ALWAYS be that niche segment of gamers that will play games simply because they are difficult--Not in the Angry Video Game Nerd way (Where the controls and level design is so poor as to make the game difficult), but in the "Gee, I actually beat this freakin' game".
