Make all public universities free and then cut off the federal financial student loans. If you want to go to a private university, pay or find a bank willing to make you a loan.

Problem solved.

i thought schools could lose their ability to receive loan funds if their cohort default rate goes to high. but that doesn't fit the narrative. so lets just ignore that.

tl;dr version:

- dropping out of high school at 17 was stupid
- if you do not attend the college classes that you sign up for you get disenrolled
- if you fail your classes then you do not get credit hours
- you get job offers for graduating not for just attending (and failing)
- an art degree?? there are no words to describe how stupid a move that was.

The entirety of student loans should be able to be discharged in federal bankruptcy proceedings. The schools aren't losing out. The lenders are to some degree but to be honest - they're part of the raping of America.

But student loans will follow you to the grave and beyond. That needs to be changed.

Well no shiat sherlock.   as long as they get pid they could careless , about the loans or petty things like educating the students.

Seriously Colleges like medical/health care should never be for profit.

George Washington wanted to establish a free national university, operated by the federal government, open to all qualified applicants. Can you imagine what Rush or Hannity or Coulter would say about someone who made such a proposal today? Why does George Washington hate America?

For profit schools are pushing students out who can barely read.

Sure, my evidence is anecdotal.  I have dealt with three people who came out of for profit "technical" schools.

One was decent, but you could tell it's because he worked hard, and learned on his own.

One couldn't understand the concept of a cable pinout, and could barely read or write.  The other, had a FARKING BS in CS and the idea of copy and paste was foreign to him.

I actually felt bad for those people.  two were interns of mine, and the other was a guy we hired as a helpdesk admin.  I had no part in hiring the guy.

Because he was a no good Deist! America is a Christian nation, and if you don't agree with that, you can just take your philosophical inquiries into the nature of divine providence and get the hell out!

The entirety if my company's middle management is composed of Phoenix and Devri graduates that were hired because the upper-middle is also composed of Phoenix and Devri graduates. Between all of them, you wouldn't see a single grammatically correct, properly punctuated email if you examined every email sent over the course of a year. It's embarrassing to even acknowledge working with them, much less under them.

People should only be what they want if its economically viable. Otherwise we can grind them to a relatively useful lubricant

Yeah, it sucks.  The grammar shiat exists even in regular schools.  I've never understood it.  Pretty much any work you do in business will require you to be literate.

In the case of the guy I worked with the CS degree, how in fark does a school award that to him when he clearly had no farking idea what he was doing?  How does that happen, and why is that school licensed to give out degrees?

All the anecdotal evidence adds up though. The people I've known that have taught for Phoenix say that most of their students are functioning at below a high school level. There are people that get a business degree from Phoenix or wherever because they want a promotion and HR needs to be able to check the "has a business degree" box (I knew someone like this), and they want to do it with the least effort possible, but they're a minority.

As opposed to Directional State Universities, who all deeply deeply care about the crapload of alumni with very useful degrees in psychology, sociology, anthropology, French, philosophy.... yeah I'm sure these schools are an infinitely better than the career colleges.

Oh, and let's not forget the total scam that is the small liberal-arts university. I'm still embarrassed about that.

powhound: And even if they manage to get a degree how many will be taken seriously by interviewers?

Depends on the job/circumstance. Some people just need a quick and dirty MBA so they can get into upper management because many places HR insists on such credentials.  Otherwise you're at the mercy of your local market.  In my line of country the Phoenix/DeVry crowd has to compete with Marquette, six or so state and private schools with a fairly depressed local economy.  So if you'd like to do basic grunt level accounting or data entry you're fine.  Just don't think you'll start at $50K and full bene's.

how about we split the difference? make student loans dischargeable in bankruptcy, but give the loan originators (banks) discretion as to whether or not to authorize it based on factors like grades, major, etc. that way, somebody (eg a bank) determines whether you'll eventually be able to afford the loan, and if theyre wrong theyre stuck holding the bag

I'm just kicking myself for not getting my UK citizenship earlier, moving to Scotland, and getting a free university education.

2014-01-26 01:14:58 AM
This is different from public universities how?  Why do you think they created $NAME Studies or Ethnic majors? So they can keep idiots in school and collect their tuition.

Somebody upthread mentioned employers requiring degrees for everything now.  There's a simple reason for that too- businesses used to be able to give employment tests, kind of like how the Armed Forces do.  Because all IQ testing shows minorities generally score less than whites, and women less than men, the Fed concluded those tests were double plus ungood (except the military, they still get to do it).  Businesses responded by requiring a college degree.

Once upon a time the state put more money towards their public universities and you could do that.  Back in the day I graduated College with a Pell Grant and only had to pay for books and lodging.  Nowadays with massive budget cuts not so much.
